Subject: Lyr Add: SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME From: Jeri Date: 29 Jul 99 - 05:32 PM I remember this. It may have mistakes and it's probably incomplete: Show me the way to go home, I'm tired and I want to go to bed, I had a little drink about an hour ago, And it went right to my head. Wherever I may roam, On land or sea or foam, You'll always hear me singing this song, Show me the way to go home. |

Subject: Lyr Add: SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME (parody) From: AndyG Date: 30 Jul 99 - 05:14 AM Or as I learned it: Indicate the way to my abode, I'm fatigued and wish for restoration. I supped a little liquor sixty minutes ago And it's percolated through to my cranium. Where e'er I may perambulate, O're land or sea or effervescent liquid, You will always discover me, perusing on this melody, Indicate the way to my abode.

Subject: RE: Show Me the Way to Go Home From: Roger the zimmer Date: 30 Jul 99 - 08:10 AM Jeri's one is the version we used to sing round the old joanna at parties in my childhood and was popular around WWII, though probably of earlier origin, and I'm also familiar with the parody on the lines AndyG quoted, which was done at Boy Scout campfires. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: HELP - Show Me the Way to Go Home From: Megan L Date: 21 Aug 15 - 08:33 AM For once I have to thank a spammer who brought this thread back to life,it has brought back fond memories and made me smile. The Springburn Branch of the Cooperative Woman's Guild used to set of by bus for the guild trip(a big event for women confined to grimy tenements). A stop for dinner usually in some hotel then set of for home as the world around us settled for the night. I was a late baby but for some reason this shy child was always allowed to tag along. On the way home the bus was filled with song. It usually started with someone singing to the opposite end of the bus. "The front/back (depending on their position) of the bus they canny sing, they canny sing, they canny sing fur peanuts." After a few retaliatory rounds someone would start another song, lots if Scot's songs and things that were popular at the time as I cuddled up to mum and gradually fell asleep. I however always knew when to wake up,since the moment the bus crossed the city boundary as one the women started singing Show Me The Way To Go Home and kept it up till we reached the drop off point often including cleverly improvised verses. Those trips and the ladies are long gone but remain with me always in the happiest memories. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: HELP - Show Me the Way to Go Home From: GUEST Date: 21 Aug 15 - 09:02 AM The Clancy Brothers, post Tommy Makem, did a version on their 1972 LP "Show Me The Way". I've adapted that version for a work in process. Here's the demo. ------------------------------------------------ I have watched the days melt and fade away Ten thousand times or more And I have drawn ten thousand conclusions In the sand along the shore No matter where I roam over land or sea or foam You will always hear me singing that song Show me the way to go home. I've waited in the sun and listened to everyone of the questions that you pose And I have found the answers In the petals of a rose I've watched you come and go, and learned enough to know There's nothing left to see And in my time I've loved a girl And I known that she loved me ------------------------------------- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0QvjW8Vsug |

Subject: Lyr Add: SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME (from Tanner) From: Jim Dixon Date: 09 Jul 18 - 12:54 AM I'm afraid the same lines stumped me that stumped you, Martin. Here's the rest though. The song can be heard at YouTube: SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME As recorded by Gid Tanner's Skillet Lickers, 1929. Old King Cole was a merry old soul. A merry old soul was he. Called for his pipe and he called for his bowl, And he called for his fiddlers three. Living clean, scheming schemes, [unintelligible line, ought to rhyme with "yell"] [unintelligible line] Let an awful yell. Show me the way to go home. I'm tired and I want to go to bed. I had a little drink about a hour ago And it went right to my head. Wherever I may roam, Over land or sea or foam, You can always hear me singin' this song: Show me the way to go home. How dry I am (how dry I am) How dry I am (how dry I am) Nobody knows (nobody knows) How dry I am (how dry I am) I pawned my hat (I pawned my hat) I pawned my shoes (I pawned my shoes) For one more drink (for one more drink) Of good ol' booze (of good ol' booze) Show me... [REPEAT] |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: HELP - Show Me the Way to Go Home From: GUEST,Paulus Date: 18 Jan 21 - 10:43 AM At my scouting we sang a version that goes: Show me the way to go home I'm tired and I wanna go to bed I had a little drink about an hour ago And I want right to my bed No, no, no matter why I'm late For land or sea or foam You can always hear me singin' this song! Show me the way to go home (pampampam pam pam pam pampampam pam pam pam) [Repeat faster and faster] Melody is slightly different from the original as well, generally all of the lines end on a high note. This is/was sung as the last song, while the lyric books are collected, so that might be why it has changed. And then this verse is just repeated faster and faster until no one can keep up, and then we had to go to bed.. I couldn't find this version anywhere so I am putting it here for posterity |
