The Swimming Song was written by Kate's ex-husband Loudon Wainwright III.
I read the thread very quickly, so it may have been mentioned, but the wonderful video of The McGarrigles singing Wade Hemsworth's The Log Driver's Waltz plays regularly on CBC TV.

I can see a great read sitting on my bookshelf right now. It's Mountain City Girls by Anna & Jane McGarrigle.

Just went and put this on the wrong thred...

Love the McGarrigles and play various of their songs. Usually sing Kiss and Say Goodbye as a first song at gigs with our band. Heart Like a Wheel. Swimming Song. Blues in D (which I play in Bb). Foolish You. But my favourite could well be Sodium Chloride which I see I sat down and worked out how to play back in 2005 and it has never been played! The words are so clever and a lovely rolling feel to the song. But we have talked about it so there's another mission...

G]Just a little [D7/A]atom of chlorine, valence [G/B]minus one[D7/C]
[G]Swimming through the [D7/A]sea, diggin' the scene, just [G/B]havin' fun[Gaug/B]
[C]She's not worried about the [G/D]shape or size of her [C/E]outer shell--
[C#dim]it's fun to ionize
[G]Just a little atom of [D7/F#]cl with an unfilled [G]shell. [G7]

And the middle bit -

Then [F/G]unsuspecting chlorine felt a magnetic pull
She looked down and her outside shell was full!
[A7]Sodium cried "What a gas, be my bride,
And [D]I'll change your [A7]name from chlo[D]rine to [A7]chlo[D7]ride!"

What did you do with your burden and your cross
Did you carry it yourself or did you crack
We all know that a burden and a cross
Can only be carried on one man's back

All my life I wanted to roam
To go to the ends of the earth
But the earth really ends where you started to roam
And you and I know what a circle is worth

Give me your hand for the parting touch
Fare thee well and thanks a lot
I know that we promised to keep in touch
But you and I know that we both forgot

Let's drink a cup to what went down
There's not much left to reveal
I think I changed my mind after what went down
As to who in the end got the better deal

Ah we come a long way since we last shook hands
Still got a long way to go
Couldn't see the flowers when we last shook hands
Couldn't see the flowers on account of the snow

i've enjoyed that song for decades and never really noticed what lovely poetry it is. thanks   it reminds me of the old story - dylan said to lennon 'it's the lyrics that make the song' and lennon replied 'no, it's the sound' i've also thought john lennon was (just) right - but it's great to hear when great lyrics are part of that a lovely sound

From: Joe Offer

On my way to town
Got my money in my secret pocket
On my way to town
Until I get there I won't turn around
I'm dropping pebbles in my tracks
I will not get lost when I come back

On my way to town
Got my lunch tucked in another pocket
On my way to town
And I will only stop to wash it down
Cool water is good enough
Can't waste my gold on finer stuff

Got to keep your mind on the maps
Feet on the ground and your eyes on the traps
Jewels that shine and pleasures that blind
And ties that bind and you're left behind

I know this road
I was on it a long time ago
I know this road
And I know every mine that could explode
You got to keep walking on through the rain
Trees that shelter fall and bring you pain

And when I get to town
I will go straight to market
When I get to town
I will do my best until the sun goes down
And come the end of day
I'll look for the stones I dropped along the way

These two Canadian ladies sing [and look] beautiful!! So sad that Kate is no longer with us! Rufus Wainwright, who sings with them on the Ken Burns Civil War documentary is, I believe, Kate's son. Go to YouTube and do a search for "Better Times Are Coming" and you can see and listen to these inspiring musicians.

Does any one know where I can find a simple musical score of the tune along with guitar chords???

Yes, it was a Stephen Foster song. I'm not sure about the date, or even if he wrote verses at different times. All the verses refer to people and events that were prominant very early in the war, with references to Lyon, Baker and Ellsworth, all of whom were killed during the first few months of the war, in 1861, and none of whom played a major role in the war or in Union successes.* The last verse was obviously written after the battle of Hampton Roads between the Monitor and Merrimac [Virginia] which took place March 8, 1862, still quite early in the war. The abscence of any mention of the more prominent heroes of the Union army such as Grant, Sherman, Thomas or Sheridan, would certainly make it probable that it was written early in the war, and was designed to raise flagging morale in the North.

With the Occupy Wall Street/99% movement sweeping the globe, I dashed off a paraphrased version of 3 verses. I thought the movement needed an Anthem, and one that is spirited and rousing and, yet, full of hope and optimism!! Here it is:

[The New] BETTER TIMES ARE COMING

1. There are voices of hope that are borne on the air,
And our land will be freed from it's clouds of despair.
For brave men and women, to the streets they have gone,
And good times, good times, are soon coming on!

CHO: Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah!
Sound the news that from the streets is booming!
Tell the people far and wide that better times are coming!

2. From streets and from parks, the message has been sent.
We won't go away, we're the ninety-nine per cent!
Oc-cu-py Wall Street will not die away,
And the darkness now upon us will turn to happy day!

CHO:

3. Ensler and Hedges and Buffett have it right.
Listen to their voices and join us in the fight!
Alliance For Justice will show us the way,
And they will lead us on to a bright and better day!

CHO: [twice]

As the movement has now spread worldwide, the 3rd verse may need to be dropped or changed if used in other countries besides the U.S.

R2

* E. E. Ellsworth was a young Colonel who organized the famous Fire Zouave regiment for the Union. Recruited heavily from N.Y City fire departments, he outfitted them in colorful Zouave uniforms [blue jackets & baggy red trousers]. He led his regiment across the Potomac R. on May 24, 1861, to occupy Alexandria, VA. Seeing a Confederate flag atop a hotel, he climbed to the roof and tore it down. Descending the stairs, he was shot and killed by the proprietor, and thus became the first casualty of the Union army and was regarded as a martyr.

Edward Baker, born in London, England, had become a U.S. Senator from the new state of Oregon. When the war broke out, he was appointed a Brigadier General, which he never actually accepted. In Pennsylvania, he raised a regiment, and on Oct. 21, 1861, led it in an attack on a Confederate Camp at Leesburg, VA. He was killed at the resulting Battle of Ball's Bluff, Oct. 21, 1861. His death transformed Baker from "an inept commander into a nationnal Hero."

Nathaniel Lyon had graduated from West Point in 1841 and began his army career at that time. He had the "advantage of long army service" [during the Seminole and Mexican wars] "and the disadvantage of a hot temper" and recklessness. His hot-headed nature resulted in his death at the battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri, regarded as a Confederate victory, on Aug. 10, 1861.

It brings up an interesting point. That being the date in which Mr. Foster's songs and so many other writers are published is a matter of record. The date in which they were actually created is less clear. I will do some digging regarding Mr. Foster's work but I do not feel that I have any guarantee of success. Still our subject is now one of the (if not THE) most beloved of our 19th century songwriters. If any would have a wealth of information available then...

It is handy timing that PBS is scheduled to air a documentary on Mr. Foster. The official date is April 23rd. It is not clear if it will be one program or a series. Perhaps we can glean something from it.

Yeah, Gervase — but I was just yanking chains. Actually I like most of what I've heard of the McGarrigals. I don't have any CDs of their stuff, but they're played quite a bit on CBC radio. I've heard a few tracks I wasn't overly keen on, but for the most part I've found nothing of theirs objectionable and some of it is very good.

Dang, you're right. It was Jan. 13, 1864. And is my face red. Well that's what I get for not considering the time that would pass between writing a fine ditty and getting the thing published as the dates I mentioned are based on. So I guess I'm going to have to do some digging seeing as I had to bring it up.

And many kind regards to you,

Rex

"Better Times Are Coming" was written by Foster in 1862 along with many other songs. He cranked out several in '63 and '64 too. Then just one or two each year until his last one appears to be "Kiss Me Dear Mother Ere I Die" written in '69. So "Better Times ..." is not one of his last. He still had a few more in 'im. Just so's you know.

Finding lyrics isn't a problem, as they are all available on the official website; written music is another matter. On the web I have found only  Love Is  (Kate and Anna) -guitar chords, based on the arrangement recorded by Emmylou Harris.  Goin' Back To Harlan (Anna) and Jacques Et Gilles (Kate) appeared in Volume 41 #4 of Sing Out! magazine (Feb/Mar/Apr '97), and that's about it, so far as I can tell, apart from one song in an anthology the name of which I forget.

I've always thought the McGarrigles are wonderful, and they do a lovely informal live show.  I missed the last UK tour, but have managed to see them a couple of times, once with Martha and Rufus singing, too.

I don't have any chords or music but Kate and Anna McGarrigle did three songs on the CD Songs of the Civil War that was a companion piece to the Ken Burns series on PBS. They were 'Was my Brother in the Battle?", "Better Times are Coming" and "Hard Times" The last two are Stephen Foster songs and I believe "Better Times Are Coming" was one of the last he wrote. I'll have to look for their stuff. That's all I've seen of theirs. Kindest reguards, NEil

Thanks Daisey for the words. Actually, its the chords/tabs/music I need. Fabulous being able to sing with these women. I sang for the very first time in public just last week to a huge crowd of about 100!!! It was also my first time singing into a microphone. I was nervous on the days leading up to the big event (actually it was hugely casual) but the nerves disappeared the night of "THE PERFORMANCE". I didn't get to sing what I wanted to sing 'cos I couldn't find music, but did enjoy singing the following as solos: "Dust in the wind" (Kansas); "Somebody's Knocking" (Terri Gibbs); "Wind beneath my wings" (you know who). So I am still looking for McGarrigle music(I have another concert in about three weeks). I am also looking for the MUSIC to "Ashes to Ashes" by Terri Gibbs; "Killing me softly" by Roberta Flack, and anything ever sung by Nina Simone (tall order!!!). Cheers, Sandra

Subject: Lyr Add: I EAT DINNER (Kate McGarrigle)
From: GUEST,Daisy
Date: 11 Apr 01 - 12:59 PM

Dear Sandra,

I'm another non-North American who likes Kate and Anna - they are lovely people and the music is great. I had the privilege of singing with them at Celtic Connections in Glasgow in Jan this year - an exhilarating experience especially for an amateur like me in front of 1500 people!

Anyway, the lyrics to I EAT DINNER (from "Heartbeats Accelerating") are:

I eat dinner at the kitchen table
By the light that switches on
I eat leftovers with mashed potato
No more candlelight, no more romance,
No more small talk, when the hunger's gone

I eat dinner at the kitchen table
And I wash it down with pop
I eat leftovers with mashed potato
No more candlelight, no more romance,
No more small talk, when the hunger stops,
When the hunger stops

Never thought that I'd end up this way,
I who loved the sparks,
Never thought my hair'd be turning to gray,
It used to be so dark
So dark

No more candlelight, no more romance,
No more small talk, when the hunger's gone

No more candlelight, no more romance,
No more small talk, when the hunger's gone
When the hunger's gone

Never thought that I'd end up like this,
I who loved the night
Never thought I'd be without a kiss
No-one to turn off the light
Turn off the light

I eat dinner at the kitchen table
With my daughter, who is thirteen
I eat leftovers with mashed potato
No more candlelight, no more romance,
No more small talk, when the plate is clean

No more candlelight, no more romance,
No more small talk, when the hunger's gone

P.S. the daughter in the song refers to Martha Wainwright, Kate's daughter, who is a brilliant singer in her own right.

Daisy

But here goes: "The Bike Song", "On my way to town", "Sun, Son (Shining on the Water), "I eat dinner". ANY would be welcome. A strange and unusual looking pair to be sure ---- but,if you want to hear harmony to turn you to jelly, listen to them singing 'Mendocino' on the Transatlantic Sessions. They had a little help from a couple of amateurs called Emmylou Harris and Karen Mathieson , but the song itself is a sweet gem that the four female voices move into another realm.

Well, there is a Wade Hemsworth songbook and they do several of his numbers. (Foolish You, Girls of the Town, The Wild Goose, etc.)

Sandra, lots of us do like K & A. A lot. But they have been in the folk scene over 30 years and so "any song" covers a pretty broad swath.

What songs are you after in particular?

Yes, Sandra, they're wonderful, but no, I don't have any of their music written down. I'd love to learn "Talk to Me of Mendocino," especially since I lived there for a short time. I have this vague memory (like most of my memories these days) that they had a songbook out. You might try amazon.com.

(If you click on the fish jumping out of the banjo at the top of this page you'll find a link to Amazon.com, which will send money to the Mudcat if you buy something.)

This just in: no songbook on Amazon, nor does The McGarrigles' Websitemention one, so I must be mistaken. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
