My apologes to those of you who have already received this. Please pass this along, if you are so inclined. I feel it is very important, even though I don't usually think much of polls...if we don't tell somebody, how will they know how we feel? Thanks!

PLEASE DISTRIBUTE WIDELY ASAP

Dear Friend of Wild Places:

Interior Secretary Gale Norton is sending letters out this week asking state officials for suggestions that could lead to opening up national monuments to oil and gas exploration, wide spread off-road vehicle use, and other harmful activities.

MSNBC is running a poll on whether such letters are justified. Please go to the address below and participate in this poll. Vote NO! It is vital that the voice of nonmotorized recreationists and wilderness advocates be heard on this important issue! Make your vote count at: MSNBC-NEWS

Please vote as soon as possible. MSNBC often closes these polls after a very short time, and without notice. Forward this message to whomever might be interested!

The votes look pretty close, Kat. I, of course, voted no, but the wording was deceptive, I feel. It didn't ask if we should open up these monuments for review. It asked if we should review Pres. Clinton's Monuments.

Tricky, huh?

I really don't think a vote on MSNEWS is gonna matter much.

Love, annamill

I can't vote on a Internet poll unless I turn on my computer and use energy derived from fossil fuels (too few nuclear plants)...ironic, eh.

And yet another shoes drops. Jeez, is this guy a centipede? This is from the same site. Bush is putting together an energy policy that would, among other things, look at nuclear power as a solution to our energy crisis. How many crackpot ideas do we have to battle at once? Is he willing to have a "safe secure nuclear" waste dump on or near the ranch? Or are there still enough disadvantaged sites around the country where that toxic sludge can be stored for the next 25,000 years? Maybe one of these days he might even get around to proposing conservation as an answer. I'm not going to hold my breath however.

At this point, they say YES, 47%; NO, 52%; Undecided, 11%.

Is this country polarized or what.

The environment is a Communist plot!

Undecided is 1%. I voted no, but a vote of this kind is pretty useless. After all, vote early & vote often certainly applies to this kind of a poll. Since this looks like a House initiative, maybe it's our Representatives we should contact.

Reagan did similar things to environmental programs...why are we surprised? I personally know a very high offical at EPA...he told me when Reagan came in, he simply ordered certain programs stopped...and thus dis-banded groups & teams that had been working on various issues for years, making it VERY hard to put them back together again, a simple but effective way to limit what is done. Bush is far less circumspect in his methods and goals, but he can do a lot of damage in 4 years with his "cost-benefit ratio" studies. You can guess what weight 'cost' & 'benefit' will have when it comes to arid old pieces of wilderness with coal under them.....

For those interested in the importance or otherwise of the poll, read MSNBC's on comments about thier polls.
