Her headlights they shone like two Diamonds In the back lay an old bail of straw and it wasn't the tax that held be back Each night I ran up the M1.

The old Morris van version.

G'day Dubliners,

I think you should look carefully at the third version in the Digital Tradition (The New Zealand Version). It's about time you scruffy types got a bit of good Kiwi Presbyterian morality into the song!

Regard(les)s,

Bob Bolton

Only trouble is that most "Irish" bands sing it as if it were a happy song. It is not. It is a very sad story. Unfortunately, the lyrics were put to a tune that just begs to be jolly. Here's a parody chorus I concocted

her eyes were red as the sunset,
You'd think she was queen of a zoo
And her feet hung off of her ankles
encased in a black leather shoe.

I sing "The black velvet band" which is a fine song, every now and then. If I think that the audience (who always sing the chorus) are not paying attention to the story, which usually happens, I hit them with the above parody, and, then shake my head.

Please, everybody; don't repost lyrics that are already in the DT!  It just makes finding things more difficult in the long run.  Much better to put in a link to what the questioner (who perhaps doesn't know what a search engine is) wanted, or, if you don't know how, copy-and-paste the URL.  Best of all, explain how he or she could find it for themself.

One of the many discussions of this song that can easily be found in the Forum through the "Digitrad and Forum Search" explains, incidentally, that it was originally set, not in Belfast, but in Barking!

Her eyes they sparkled like diamonds
You'd think she was queen of the land
With her hair splayed out on the pillow
Tied up in the back of my van

Hehehehehehe

A NOT so correct version, but it's the way -I- like to sing it!

Correct version... HA!

As if such a thing exists...

it is "A" correct version.

I learned it several decades ago as "like the diamonds - You'd think she was queen..."

Her eyes they shone like diamonds, they thought her the queen of the land, and her hair hung over her shoulders tied up with a black velvet band.

This is the correct version.

Welcome, Dubliners I got these words from the Digital Tradition search box. There are several other version in the DT.

Is there more than one of you, Dubliner(s)? If so, hello y'all.

Rich McCarthy

BLACK VELVET BAND (2)

In a neat little town they call Belfast Apprenticed in trade I was bound And many an hour of sweet happiness I spent in that neat little town Till bad misfortune befell me And caused me to stray from the land Far away from my friends and relations To follow the black velvet band

Her eyes they shone like the diamond You'd think she was queen of the land And her hair hung over her shoulder Tied up in a black velvet band

Well, I was out strolling one evening Not meaning to go very far When I met with a pretty young damsel She was selling her trade in a bar When I watched, she took from a customer And slipped it right into my hand Then the Watch came and put me in prison Bad luck to the black velvet band

Next morning before judge and jury For our trial I had to appear The judge, he said, "Young fellow The case against you is quite clear And seven years is your sentence You're going to Van Dieman's Land Far away from your friends and relations To follow the black velvet band"

So come all you jolly young fellows I'd have you take warning by me And whenever you're out on the liquor Beware of the pretty colleen They'll fill your with whiskey and porter Until You're not able to stand And the very next thing that you know You're landed in Van Dieman's Land

I am pretty sure that you will find versions of all of these in the DT but here is a site that I believe contains all the Dubliners Lyrics which may be a better option if you are looking for specific versions.

For very well known songs like these, your best bet is to type the titles (one at a time and without "the", of course) into the "Digitrad and Forum Search" box prominently displayed on the main Forum page.  This will get you lots of links to various versions of these songs.

I have a c.d called 25 Irish pub songs. I am trying to locate the lyrics to the following songs, The Black Velvet Band by The Dubliners. The Irish Rover & Finnegan's Wake both by Ronnie Drew.
