There've been several occasions when I've wondered why some (all?) Mudcatters seem so different when you meet them from what they've projected on the forum. Question:

Is what you "see" on the screen, REALLY what you get, when someone meets you in person, or talks to you on the phone?

I've had the opposite experience. Most of the Mudcatters I've met have had personalities that were consistent with the personality they seem to project on screen.

Reasons why they don't match up may include:
--They don't feel that comfortable writing in a style which experesses their personalities. I have a feeling some of our more serious, business-like members may actually be a bit shy. They may posses no personal warmth whatsoever, but they may just not feel comfortable expressing it.
--Your interpretation could be off. It's extremely easy to attibute qualities to a person from their writing. It's very hard to tell what a person really meant unless they meant exactly what they said. There's nothing else there, but I think it's human nature to fill in motives, emotions, personaltiy traits, etc. If you actually know the person, you may have a chance of being right. If you don't, you're more likely to be wrong.

I've had neither contradictions nor unpleasant surprises when meeting any Mudcatters face-to-face, at least not yet. Say, Idle Musings, why don't you join, so we can get to know you?

Well I've met about thirty five now, and most are pretty consistent with their Cyber-face.

Little Hawk is much quieter and reserved than he is around here.

Carol C. seems shyer in person.

Peter T is funnier.

Catspaw is MUCH MORE RESERVED!

Bert is MUCH MORE ENGLISH!

I swear a LOT more (but in a harmless way!) and often play the fool to get laffs and loosen folks up.

Jeri is shy in person and VERY smart (as she is on MC)

Everyone else seems 'bout the same to me.

I was once told, by someone I had met online and then in person, that I was the most consistent between my online and in-person "personalities" of anybody they had ever met.

I took it as a compliment.

I.M.,

from what they've projected on the forum

My experience has been that very few people here "project" a persona of themselves on this forum.

Do you?

Since I took WYSIWYG as my Mudcat name, I suppose I would hope that this is true of me, and I think nearly everyone who has taken the time to get to know me (including some who had flamed me once upon a time) would say that it is.

One thing implied in my name, BTW, is that what one chooses to see if often all they "get." You might want to think about it from that viewpoint for a bit.

I've met a few 'Catters and generally you are seeing the real thing here. Some are more reserved in real life but that is as would be expected owing to the nature of the medium.

I am generally more or less the same, but as Naes rightly points out, the medium makes the difference at times. One on one with friends I rarely get too nutso and enjoy the listening and the easy camaraderie. My sailing partner of many years and I would often spend hours with fewer than 10 words spoken.

But as the audience increases I get more into the spirit of games and quick reponses or outrageousness. Maybe its the latent class clown thing or something. Add in a few folks who can be either ribbed or embarassed and I'm on. Its all me, just at different times. I think that's true here too.

On some threads with only limited interest and few participants, I'm a lot more reserved than on one that's likely to draw a crowd. Its not so much an "image" or a "persona" as it is different ways of reacting to different situations.

Spaw -- oh yeah, one more thing Cincinnati....

I do try, but deep down inside I really am an intolerant bitch.....I just don't express it often. More on line than in person, but not near as often as I think it!! It might be called maturity, but more likely it is self preservation.

I like being helpful, I like "providing" whether it be info, food, or what ever, but I cannot tolerate stupidity. Ignorance is fixable, and quite forgiveable, but I don't deal well with stupidity.(Uhh, what I mean here is the sterotypical "blonde/ValleyGirl syndrome--not a handicapped defiency, OK)

Bottom line is, I like to think I am an archetypal "MOM" , I want to help and fix it, but you have to help too. I have no idea if that is how I really come across here or not....."if we could see oursleves as other see us"...

I think we should ask bill/sables; he has met more of us in person than anyone else, hasn't he?

I talk easier than I type, but I try VERY hard to project my mood, expression, attitude online....hence all the dots, underlinings, CAPS, *grins*...etc......

I make an attempt to make the sentence you read 'sound' like me talking, as I really hate being mis-understood.

Since I attend the FSGW Getaway, I have met 20-30 or so Mudcatters, and most of them were pretty close to what I expected, some a bit shyer, some less.

I do note that there are folks whom I admire & respect, but whom I doubt very much I would be 'buddies' with in person....just different approaches to conversation, life and 'personal space' issues. And there are a few I'd like VERY much to know better.....I think... *grin*)

I don't know how I come off in person as opposed to here. Probably the biggest difference is that I tend to share very deep feelings here. I liken it to writing in a journal and then letting my friends read it so they know my innermost feelings. Might seem odd, but I liken writing in the threads to sharing music. It is a way for me to let others see me, the real me, and not just the physical image I project. Sometimes it gets me in real trouble.

What that translates out to when I meet others is that I have seen their hearts and their feelings. The friendships that have blossomed out of that are too numerous to mention. And the day that I meet THE FAIR ONE, well, I will have to go to confession for sure....................LOL.

HEY FIELDING.............waddya mean I don't have a brogue????????????????????

Hey, mousethief. Has everyone from Bremerville-by-the-Sound moved to Silverdale yet? The place just wasn't the same after Ed. Bremmer died. My sister worked for him for a while, but Bremerville had already started ti disintegrate. Downtown Bremerville moved to Silverdale Mall and the people in town followed. It looked like about 3/4 of them had moved the last time I was there.

This looks like an interesting article on the mathematician in question.

This has some very interesting info with links to more info about several of the important people connected to cybernetics.

Bill Sables, Allan C, and Sorcha were even more than I'd hoped for, in person, and very much like what I'd expected based on their postings. I knew Wyo Woman in 3D a little bit before Mudcat, but grew to know her even better because of Mudcat and can safely say she is very much in 3D as she is here!

There is no doubt in my mind that when I finally do get to meet several of the Mudcatters I feel closest to, that they will be just as I know them to be, probably better as they will have real arms to hug with and bod I can hug!:-)

I looked at a few of Norbert Weiner's books, but they weren't easy reading. The first started out on transformation properties of Abelian groups, as I remember. Shannon's 'Information Theory' is a bit easier, and I still have my copy of the original 1954 edition. The hitch is it's all about communication of messages, and ways to code them that minimizes the chances of noise distorting the messages, and has nothing to do with what an intelligent layman would call information. It paved the way to checking that's done here and on computer files by doing such things as cyclic redundancy checks, and such.

Yeah, Bremerton isn't quite as vibrant as it was before they built the Kitsap Mall. But it's still a lovely town, and really no less lovely for being quieter these days. Let the noisy mall-oriented types move away. If my job and family didn't conspire as they do to keep me in Sumner, I'd move to Bremerton in a flash.

Hmm. I don't think I post enough here to really have a 'Mudcat personality.' But in general, my 'online personality' is a lot like my real life version, but a bit more reserved. When people first meet me (in real life), I guess they might think I seem weird, and shy. Then as they get to know me, they find out that not only am I weird and shy, but that I'm also: Violently moody; Freakishly compassionate; Short-tempered; Un(anti)amitious; Immature; Puritanical (no, not in a religious way); Agnostic (yes, in a religious way); True Neutral (Heh-heh, D&D, *snort*); Opinionated; Hard to enjoy a television program with; Better in small doses; Fiercely loyal; Guilt-ridden; Not quite as dumb as you think; Not quite as smart as I think; Fucking long-winded, eh?; Ah, yes. Vulgar and loud-mouthed, too...; Etc.

Like I said, I don't post here all that much, so I'm not sure how much of my real-life personality shows through. But if it doesn't, now you know. ;)

Pompous pedantic curmudgeon online, pompous pedantic curmudgeon in the flesh; that's me.
One thing about meeting 'Catters in the real world is that, having known them from their postings, a lot of the initial gaucheness and awkwardness is already out of the way and there's a feeling that you know them already.
And another good thing about an online folk club (speaking as someone who doesn't use PalTalk - I must get around to rigging one of the Macs to use it one day...) is that in cyberspace no-one knows how badly I sing!
Mind you, I got a shock when I realised that Liz the Squeak was actually a 6ft 4in prop forward with a bushy moustache and a duelling scar, and that Micca was a dead ringer for Julie Andrews... :^)

One big difference is that my cyber-self is madly in love with some of the gentler members of the Mudcat; but in real life, of course, that doesn't happen.

Oh, and my cyber self is planning to start a religion based on bosom worship, while my real self would never do such a thing, and even finds the notion of a Temple of the Divine Mammary a bit off...at least, off the straight and narrow! :>)

Every Mudcatter I've met seems to fit the golden slipper.
Now lets see......
I was blinded by the brilliant light of Peter T's intelligence and I would nik name him Bashful of the seven dwarfs for sure.
Jeri is a straight shooter in life too. Did you learn that in the Army Jeri? She also exuberates such warmth. She makes me feel safe and I would seek her out as a trust worthy friend.
Flattop has a dry sharp wit that is balanced with a warm attentive smile.
Mig Mick's name should be marketed in a line of Gund Teddy Bears. The man is so kind and generous, he could melt an iceberg with the love radiating off him.

There have been others I've met. That is just a starter. I must say that old saying has much truth to it.....'What you see is usually what you get'.

The knowledge about a person gained from Mudcat certainly speeds up forging a friendship/relationship in some cases quite dramatically.

Well I've been delighted by how much the people I've met through this madhouse are just like themselves ( did that make sense?) and a throughly sound bunch of reprobates and maniacs they are too.The other noticeable thing to me was how much better people play/sing/tap dance then they mention on here. The talent in a room full of mudcatters goes off the Richter scale, ( that includes Gervase who has one of the best voices I've ever heard). It is however regrettably true about Liz...played for England a couple of times I believe, but Micca only resembles Julie Andrews when he's dressed in his nun's outfit..... My good friend, Little Neophyte should talk about the big heart. Banjo Bonnie has great talent, a wonderful will to succeed, excellent skills, a genuine love for people, great legs, and a smile to die for, ...................LOL.

When I posted my original post above I started to post my impressions of those I had met and realized that it might approach the size of War and Peace. Joe Offer is a wonderful man and has become a good friend. Peter T. is another wonderful fellow that I truly love to be around. Rick........whatta guy, and married far above his station to this walking Goddess. I love that Duckboots, and so does Ciara. Beebs, Ferrara, Bill D., Kath Westra who really has become one of my closest friends (and cute as hell, I might point out :-), Bro Barry, Allan C, Bill Sables, Sandy and Caroline (I want to be Sandy when I grow up, cuz that means I could sing like one of God's own Angels AND be married to Caroline Paton...., AND OF COURSE, my very good friends, Dan Milner and Bonnie Milner. Sheeeeeeiiiittttt, almost left out Dani who is a marvelously talented person.

Point is, that I have been surprised in almost every instance by how much more that I liked these people in person. With very few exceptions, they are everything I imagined they would be.

Max, Bert, MaryMac, Dick, Susan...........wow, fantastic people..................'cept when Dick is trying to cut off his fingers...........Told you it would be like War and Peace, and I haven't gotten to everyone yet......

Mudcaters different? From what? The first results from the Human Genome Project have been released. You have about 30,000 genes, and no one else differs from you by more than 30 genes. Boost that up to 3% difference and you could be a banana, yeast, or jelly fish.

Chimpanzies have been around a lot longer than humans and have much larger gene variations.

Women are born with a fixed number of ova. Males have to generate new sperm all the time, and thus have a bigger chance of mutation. Males have contributed about 2/3 of our evolution and females 1/3. Don't crow too much men, that goes for hereditary diseases as well as for the pluses.

Guest - firstly, are you sure about that figure of only 30 genes which differ amongst humans? I ask because I know of several single gene disorders, and scientists are always talking about different genes which affect our likelihood of having different diseases (such as breast cancer, schizophrenia, etc). And I'm sure I have heard of more than 30 different instances.

Anyway, even if it were true - 30 different genes add up to a hell of a lot of variation. Say on average there were only 2 alleles for each gene - that makes 2 to the power of 30 (which I make over 1000 million combinations). Also, genotype does not equal phenotype. Genes and environment interact to produce all our characteristics. So in short, every human is unique.

So next time you want to hijack the conversation, make sure you choose a subject you actually know something about.....

And I thought I'd have to have a different number of chromosomes to be a jellyfish...oh well.

In any case, I don't think genes have all that much to do with personality, which is what we're discussing. They undoubtedly have something to do with it, but have no effect on how we learn to treat other people, whether it's someone who's a friend, or someone we don't know and never will meet. This is probably learned behavior as opposed to personality, but it's the most evident thing when we first meet other people.

Me, I'm always apt to try to avoid "groupthink." I'm equally as apt to try to avoid rebelling just for the sake of rebelling. The former probably comes from my mom, who would come into the room when I was watching a big-scary-monster movie, and root for the monster. ("Oh, poor King Kong! He just wants to go home, and they're scaring him, and...") It's why I avoid the "get the guest" games. I don't want to be part of the angry mob of townspeople going after the monster with torches and farm implements.

As for the latter - the rebelling - I just hate feeling like I knee-jerk in any direction. We've all seen people who disagree with the predominant way of thinking simply because it IS the predominant way of thinking, and they seem to take great care in being seen to hold a different view. They're just as controlled by group mentality as the ones who conform.

I'm just as much a social animal as anyone else, but I try to figure out not if I agree or disagree, but what I think. This isn't something I was born with, and it's technically not an aspect of personality. It has nothing to do with genes, other than genes making it possible for me to learn. I do think that we learn to react certain ways from our parents, so it's something we inherit, although not biologically. Those who've learned to treat others like crap will continue to do so unless they learn another way. It's possible, but I don't think it happens very often.

It's being re-aired on TV now, but's a little over half-way through. (just finished the part about the half on one's genes that aren't really yours, they just hitchhike through the DNA chain, and are good at reproducing themselves and not good for anything else)

Jeri is different than I imagined her, when I first met her. But with the passage of time, her posts have come to sound exactly like her. When first I started reading her posts I imagined her to be a bit gregarious, very outgoing and witty in an intellectual fashion. When I met her she was soooooooooooo quiet and in the background. But I could hear her voice and hear her instrument. And I found her to be a fascinating person. As you come to know her, you realize that her quietness is really because she is thoughtful, she is outgoing but in a very genuine way. No phoniness whatsoever. The witty in an intellectual way stands. And she is a calm voice in a sea of reactionaries. I appreciate this. More than once she has hauled me back by my ears and pointed out that I was reacting before I understood what was happening. Hard to beat a friend like that.

I feel safe in saying #1 isn't MK or Gargoyle. MK has been being an informative friend to folks here, and #1 hasn't even come close to GG's nastiness. Even if return e-mail addresses could be added to posts and IF Max wanted to do it, I could fake my e-mail the same way as I can do in a newsgroup post or e-mail list. I could get a throw-away account with Yahoo or someone. Not only that, but you mention spammers harvesting addresses. What's to prevent them joining and getting everyone's e-mail? I'm fairly sure that if e-mail addresses started appearing here, more people would opt for "GUEST" status rather than the one who would join.

I want to see frivolous and irresponsible postings eliminated from the Mudcat Forum. The only way this ever seems to work well is to make (real) return email addresses of the poster made available. Every other newsgroup, single clicks in your News on your browser, to subscription newsgroups. I discovered that someone (unknown to me) even subscribed me to a subscription newsgroup, something I didn't know one could do.

The return email address puts the poster in position for anyone to copy the email address to use for flaming or spaming. How can one avoid that? I gave one suggestion above, but I don't know enough about software for servers to be sure that it is workable.

I long ago figured out about irresponsible posting, that if you can't beat them, join them, and make it so bad that Max will have to face the problem and do something about it. You can be very sure that Max (and a lot of others know who I am). You don't see everything regarding the posts in the dinky headings available on this Forum.

Recently I've been too busy to read enough threads to have a feel for what's going on. Good to hear that MK is being positive and that GUEST,#1 is not offending everyone.

I want to see frivolous and irresponsible postings eliminated from the Mudcat Forum

This is too rich, coming from #1.

A- This is not a News Group. It's not the usual MB either.

B- My e-mail addy is all over the place here as well as a lot of other people's............If it were included in my posts, so what?

C- Feel free to put your (real) addy in.

I think you're completely off your nut. E-mail addys aren't going to stop a thing. What other "causes" are you pushing? What are "irresponsible postings" anyway?

I'd say any post by a guest other than a first-time visitor asking for information (e.g. song lyrics) is under a prima facie suspicion of being irresponsible. If people want to take regular part in the give-and-take discussions here, they should join. Not doing so indicates an unwillingness to be held responsible for one's words, which in turn suggests a desire to post irresponsibly.

Guest, you mean I long ago figured out about irresponsible posting, that if you can't beat them, join them, and make it so bad that Max will have to face the problem and do something about it. ?

Yeah, just what Max needs, people like you making his job harder. It's sort of like people complaining about public radio who don't pledge during the fund drive: you're getting something for free, and yet you bellyache about it. Worse, you don't just bellyache, you actually make the problem worse.

If there's logic in there, I'm a Vulcan.

You can be very sure that Max (and a lot of others know who I am). ........"Guest#1"

Then why not use your normal name to post since you post as a Guest anyway? What's to lose?

Oh, who cares? Why let this cocksmoker hijack an interesting thread? Whoever GUEST,#1 is, s/he's pathetic. We should just laugh at this kind of insecure attention masturbator. If we don't look at his/her actions as "flames," but instead as "retarded antics," s/he will at least have some sort of value to society (entertainment). Let's be kind to #1, eh? Haw-haw.

What are you saying Lepus? You mean like the #1 has halitosis or real nasty body odor or something? OK....we can play ol #1 like that I think. Now....What shall we call #1? I mean he stinks more like #2. Certainly cannot call him that so how about "Doggy Breath?" Or how about "Pit Stink" or something along those lines? How about "Body Odor" and then we can cut it back to save the typing and call him "BO" for short? Got any ideas there Lepus?

catspaw49 doesn't want any changes because it would seriously handicap his/her flaming, as can be seen in the above and many other posts. However, I tried to find out how long that had been going on, and a Forum search on 'catspaw49' grinds away for a while then gives the message 'Document contains no data', but I already knew that of his/her messages.

My oh my..........Getting very touchy aren't we? One thing for certain though, my posts are all under my name.......catspaw49. And it takes very little effort to find ALL the details of my life here on this forum. I think even my blood type is posted here. Putting in my e-mail stops nothing as I have not done anything to be ashamed of.....like posting under a pseudonym/anon Guest thing.........except for Cletus, Paw, and Cleigh O'Possum. Of course you know that, since you've been around so long and all.

Too pathetic to look the stuff up? No problem.......

Pat Patterson, catspaw@buckeyeinternet.com, Bremen, Ohio----Married, two kids (Tris and Mike), 51 years old, born Tuscarawas County, Ohio.............All that stuff has been posted continuously here and there on the forum............

NOW......YOUR TURN!!!!

kat/katlauging, I once thought you were in the same league as catspaw49, but you've really redeemed yourself lately. As for photos, I don't care about clubs and cliques. I saw an announcement of a new Tradchat line on the web the other day on rec.music.folk, but it turned out to be just another general chatline with little to do with folk songs or music.

Well I guess this thread has degenerated to the point where my original question hardly matters. Silly me, I'd hoped it would stay friendly and funny. Still, with so many people here, I guess it's too much to ask of some that they keep their personal agendas to themselves or at least in another thread. To the rest. Thank you. Interesting stuff.

If the owner of this site wants it to be a site purely for the discussion of folk and blues music, then that is his right. And if he were to say so, then I would comply - and he could chuck out any members and delete any posts which were off topic.

None of this has happened, so I assume that he is happy for it to continue to be a big mish mash of what it is.

If you want just music threads, then there is the ever so difficult option of just reading those threads - its not hard to work out which they are.

You have a right to an opinion on how you think this site should be, but equally we have the right to think you are an arse for the way you go about expressing that wish.

If this site doesn't meet your high expectations, then go and set up your own site and play with yourself there.

Please Bill tell us what you think of people you have met!!! I am with Amergin, rescue this poor thread.

Okay, I will do a bit.

Kendall is very sweet and much less scary in real life than you would think...oh, and he's a wonderful performer.

Naemanson is a big lovable teddy bear type with a nice voice who knows some great songs.

Jeri (if she is the one I remember) sings with some real intensity...

Animaterra is a sweetie and sings like an angel and has a real "Libra" peacemaker feel about her, and pretty long, long hair!

Barry, well Barry must be heard to be believed: a rich, lusty tenor made for sea shanties. Let us all hope he recovers well!

Judy Predmore works tirelessly for the folk music community and is a Martun Wyndham Reade fanatic! She also has a lovely way with a song and really makes it her own.

The Woodchucks know some incredible songs, both funny and deep, and are real live Vermonters in every way imaginable...hair to shoes...

I met lots more Mudcatters at the NH gathering but can't recall their names now, sorry!

Also met Micca while in the UK, and he is a handful! A lovable, talkative, effervescent madman. Quite the photographer. Don't get him started on the UK pagan community...and also got to meet Liz and her SO and daughter, lovely people!

Peg

I met WyoWoman at Dave and Pam Swan's a year ago and again in her home state of Colorado last November. She is as funny, warm, intelligent and spirited as her posts. Riggy, radriano, BSeed, Melani, BillR, Rev, Dave and Pam Swan, Winters Wages, Elise - all catters who I think many of you would enjoy in a musical setting AND sitting around the kitchen table gabbing. Great folks, and they probably don't post enough to let aspects of their personalities shine through online (with the exception of Dave and Pam - who are very much like their wonderful posts).

I met Barry Finn and Peg at the Boston traditional singers club, and talked with Barry at Mystic. Barry comes through in 3D as in his posts. A great guy. Didn't get to talk with Peg much as I had to leave the club early, but she can SING and was friendly and as welcoming as her PM responses to my thread inquiring about Boston sessions.

I sometimes worry that I come across as a bit of a nutcase, then I remember that I am far more of a crazy, dippy cow than dots on a screen could EVER convey.

So my secret's safe....
