Greetings all: I'm still researching the novel on Jack the Ripper I told you about. I'm looking for the lyrics and hopefully guitar chords for a song called "A Violet From Mother's Grave" It is reputed that Mary Jane Kelly, the last accepted victim of Jack the Ripper was singing that the day before she was murdered. Kindest reguards, NEil

Netscape plays the midi, but doesn't display the images or text, except for the dating agency advert, which seems a little ironic somehow.  IE displays the images and text, but only after it has complained that "the plugin" didn't initialise properly, and doesn't play the midi.  The designer of the site seems to have made the mistake of using proprietory code to display image files instead of letting the browsers do it themselves, and presumably didn't bother to test it properly!  If you can't get it to work, there's a copy of the 1881 sheetmusic at The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music:

A VIOLET FROM MOTHER'S GRAVE

Subject: Lyr Add: A VIOLET FROM MOTHER'S GRAVE (Will H. Fox
From: Malcolm Douglas

Maybe your browser is better set up than mine! For the sake of it, here are the lyrics given on that site:

A VIOLET FROM MOTHER'S GRAVE
Words and music by Will H. Fox.
Philadelphia: J. W. Pepper, 1881.

1. Scenes of my childhood arise before my gaze,
Bringing recollections of bygone happy days.
When down in the meadow in childhood I would roam,
No one's left to cheer me now within that good old home,
Father and Mother, they have pass'd away;
Sister and brother, now lay beneath the clay,
But while life does remain to cheer me, I'll retain
This small violet I pluck'd from mother's grave.

CHORUS: Only a violet I pluck'd when but a boy,
And oft'times when I am sad at heart this flow'r has giv'n me joy;
But while life does remain in memoriam I'll retain,
This small violet I pluck'd from mother's grave.

2. Well I remember my dear old mother's smile,
As she used to greet me when I returned from toil,
Always knitting in the old arm chair,
Father used to sit and read for all us children there,
But now all is silent around the good old home;
They all have left me in sorrow here to roam,
But while life does remain, in memoriam I'll retain
This small violet I pluck'd from mother's grave.

Ah, thank you Malcolm, and I'm sorry Neil, but that is the way sheet music usually prints for me, except for JC's Tune finder. Even then, it is small, but the resolution is usually such that I can take it to a copy machine and blow it up. Levy is esp. bad about print resolution.......

Trying to print images from a browser is a pain in the bum, sure enough.  Here are two things you can do if you don't have image editing software from which you can print.

(1) Save the image files to your computer.  (2) Open a blank page in your text editor.  (3) Type the following: <center><img src="insert filename of image here" width="826" height="1053"></center>  Save the text page with an .html extension, in the same directory as the image, and open it in your browser; repeat the process for each image.  You probably won't be able to read the text, but the staff notation should be legible.  This will display the image at about the right size for printing on an A4 size sheet of paper; you may have to tweak the measurements, which are in pixels, to fit it to American paper sizes.  It works for me in IE, but for some reason Netscape prints only 1/4 of the blasted page.  Set your printer to a fairly high resolution if you can.

Alternatively (a bit easier), if you have Microsoft Word you can insert the images into pages in a document and re-size them there.  Same result; I imagine you can do it in other word processing programs, too.
