Subject: Milligan's Hill, Uncle Milligan?
From: GUEST,chaosred
Date: 11 Apr 01 - 07:58 PM

I managed to tape the song off a radio program years ago, but the quality is very bad, and now I don’t know what it’s called, who performed it, or what all the lyrics are.

It begins:

Every Thursday evening I’d be headin’ up to Milligan’s hill...

And the chorus is:

And his eyes rolled back in his head,
He flopped around like he was dead,
He slurped and burped and fell in his beer,
And everyone thought he was dyin’.
His legs shot into the air,
Scared the hell out of everyone there,
And Milligan said, “Damn you, Billy, silly old fool!
Now you really have pickled our dill,
We’ll no’ be gettin our fill o’ the will,
Cause you’ve killed our Uncle William!”

Can anyone help me with this?
I don’t usually frequent this database, so replies to sahaar@yahoo.com would be deeply appreciated!

HTML line breaks added. --JoeClone, 14-Jan-02.

There is indeed a person, or perhaps a group, called Doctor Badbreath, whose album "Tourin' the Two-Step" contains MILLIGAN'S HILL. You can listen to the entire song at the artist's MySpace page. Below is my partial transcription.

This is really an extraordinary song. It is sung at a breakneck speed, as fast as an Irish fiddler can slur sixteenth-notes. In fact, I suspect the tune may be an Irish one.

This is only about half the song. I'll work on it more later.

MILLIGAN'S HILL
Doctor Badbreath

1. Well, ev'ry Thursday evenin'
I'd be headin' out to Milliganville,
And everyone there was as drunk as a bear,
Makin' sure they got their fill again.
Everything went the same for twenty years.
They ate their fill and they drank the beer,
And Milligan came to his hill again.
Time and again, he would bring a sweet filly for Bill.

2. Well, Billy was Milligan's really good cousin,
And long they hung together, you know,
At Milligan's Hill, it was silly old Billy
Who really would get all the fillies in tow.
And their uncle William, drunk as he was,
He played the role of the local fuzz,
And he'd come up to Milligan's Hill again.
Time and again he would drink up his fill and he'd go.

3. Well, winter on Milligan's Hill was a thrill.
To begin with, you must have a will to get up.
How ... the wickedest liquor;
The chill it will kill if you dare to get drunk.
Now local folk they didn't go far,
Except for one, a bad old parson Finnegan.
Time and again he would come up
To Milligan's Hill and he brought his own cup.

4. Well, Billy and Milligan, William and I
Were quietly drinkin' our fill o' the brew,
When out of the chill of old Milligan's Hill
Come a filly o' Billy's a-bringin' her crew.
She walked inside and then kaboom!
Brought thirty-four women of ill repute.
Billy and Milligan leapt to their feet
But the thrill it was watchin' old William scoot(?).

CHORUS: And his eyes rolled back in his head.
He flopped around like he was dead.
He slurped and burped and fell in his beer,
And everyone thought he was dyin'.
His legs shot into the air,
Scared the hell out of everyone there,
And Milligan said, "Damn you, Billy, you silly old fool!
Now you really have pickled our dill.
We'll no' be gettin' our fill o' the will,
'Cause you killed our Uncle William!"

[To be continued.]

[OK, here's the remainder of the song—still my transcription from the audio file. Quite a few phrases are doubtful; I'd appreciate any clarification.]

5. Well, Milligan, Billy, an' I were just millin'
Around an' were willin' to help if we could.
The crazy young fillies come down with the willies
An', cryin' like sillies, their heads were like wood.
They wailed an' flailed all over the place.
Their makeup was runnin' all down their face
As, still again, Billy an' Milligan drank up
Their fill of the still an' I thought that they should.

6. There Uncle William lay quite still
On Milligan's Hill in the pub.
A knock on the door an' a puke-up or more,
An' he knocked off snow to the floor with a thud.
He just stood still in a chill
... through me an' Bill.
Parson Finnegan said, "What sin
Have you done to your Uncle William?"

CHORUS: As his eyes rolled back in his head.
He flopped around like he was dead.
He slurped an' burped an' fell in his beer,
An' everyone thought he was dyin'.
His legs shot into the air,
Scared the hell out of everyone there,
An' Parson Finnegan said, lookin' grim,
"It's a terrible joke an' I'm sure it's a sin,
An' your thirty-five hookers will never quite win
Over the heart of your poor old dead Uncle William."
An' Milligan said, "Damn you, Billy, you silly old fool!
Now you really have pickled our dill.
We'll no' be gettin' our fill o' the will,
'Cause you killed our Uncle William!"

7. Well, Billy an' Milligan, Parson Finnegan,
All of the thirty-five women, an' I
Sat in the chill up on Milligan's Hill
An' we all drank our fill with a tear in our eye,
But we soon got terribly shaken,
'Cause never before had we been taken,
Uncle William either killin' himself
Or slappin' and startin' to cry.

8. Parson Finnegan, all the women,
An' Milligan, Billy, an' I
Covered his rear with our glasses o' beer
An' our feet an' we hastily threw him outside.
The wind that blew had just the chill
To freeze his arse as cold as the hill,
An' Uncle William ran into Milligan's Pub
To the fire and he stuck in his hide.

CHORUS: An' his eyes rolled back in his head.
He flopped around like he was dead,
Slurped an' burped an' fell in his beer,
An' everyone thought he was dyin'.
His legs shot into the air,
Scared the hell out of everyone there,
An' Uncle William never leaped higher,
'Cause never before was his arse on fire.

CHORUS: His eyes rolled back in his head.
He flopped around like he was dead.
He slurped an' burped an' fell in his beer,
An' everyone thought he was dyin'.
His legs shot into the air,
Scared the hell out of everyone there,
An' Milligan said, "Damn you, Billy, you silly old fool!
Now you really have pickled our dill.
We'll all be gettin' our fill o' the will,
We'll all be gettin' our fill o' the will,
Till we kill our Uncle William!"

Oh, you friggin RULE! Thank you, I heard this song once when I was about 10 years old, and the chorus stuck in my head like an undying earworm ever since. :)

It was one of the few songs/shows from my childhood left that I was unable to track down and identify, and you've just done me a massive favour with not only the song name but all the lyrics too.

Thanks again!

The name of this song is Milligan's Hill - by Doctor Badbreath - came out probably around 1982. I saw him perform at a local mall one evening back then.

Hope this helps.

The CD is now available through Amazon.com
