Subject: RE: Dance Hall Girls From: Tim Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca Date: 17 Nov 97 - 07:08 PM I have a version recorded by Canadian singer Kevin Head back in late 70's or early 80's -- the LP has no date. It is listed as being written by an "A. Fraser". The lyrics are given on the sleeve notes. As far as I know Head's LP is long out of print. He used to sing in the bars in eastern Canada. Was it him that you saw? |
Subject: RE: Dance Hall Girls From: rechal Date: 17 Nov 97 - 07:17 PM The song was originally written and performed by Fraser & Debolt, a male/female duo from Canada that was recording around the late 60s-early 70s. The song is from an album called "Overnight Sensation."
Their stuff is not easy to find, but if you wanted to try, I'd start in Canada first in the used record stores.
As far as I remember, the lyrics went something like:
These dance hall girls
Know how to treat you right
They let you take
Their bodies but not their minds
There used to be a singer named Lisa something in Norfolk, Virginia, who used to perform this. I think she occasionally performed with a woman named Amy Ferebee. Good luck! |

Subject: RE: Dance Hall Girls From: rechal Date: 18 Nov 97 - 09:30 PM You're welcome. I'd classify the genre as folk, or folk/rock (à la Dylan, Joni Mitchell, McGarrigle Sisters, etcetera). |
Subject: RE: Dance Hall Girls From: Tim Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca Date: 19 Nov 97 - 08:10 PM Well, I'll post the lyrics as soon as I can get the album out of my box. I can't help you with the tune. It seems to be the same song as the one Kevin Head recorded. |

Subject: RE: Dance Hall Girls From: Tedham Porterhouse Date: 24 Jul 01 - 09:54 PM I just read through this thread and some info needs correcting. "Dance Hall Girls" was on the first Fraser & DeBolt LP, but it was written solely by Allan Fraser, not by both. I was up in Montreal on May 24th for the Bob Dylan birthday bash at Club Zone. Allan Fraser was there and performed "Visions of Johanna." |
