Steve S - ah yes, the "Boulevard of Death" -- I live about 50 feet from that wonderful place -- if this were not a big election year - it would not be an issue -- burglaries are up big time in Forest Hills -- because all the cops are sitting on Queens boulevard waiting for someone to go 30.5 miles per hour -- and the elderly people who start crossing when the "don't walk" sign starts flashing, expecting to get all the way across the widest part before the light changes -- don't get me started!!!

Yeah, Larry's band recently played the People Voice Cafe, and one of Joy's bands -- Water Sign -- will be there on Saturday, April 28, 2001. I am certain Joy will fill us all in with the details.

And any 'Catters around NYC this coming July 15 are welcome tc celebrate Woody Guthrie's 89th birthday at a Round Robin Songfest at CB's 313 Gallery. That's on a Sunday night from 7 to 9 o'clock. Yes, I know Woody was born on July 14, 1912, but CB's management wasn't ready to hand over a Saturday night spot for a Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash on pure speculation. But if we can pack the house this year, then just maybe...

Anyway the Birthday Bash will feature Carlos Rosello (punk-rocker of The Krays and The Infiltrators), Erica Smith (of the legendary trio Ida Red and now of Erica and the Tumbleweeds), Jessica Feinbloom (hostess of many a fine ice cream social), Joel Landy (host of the Songs of Freedom TV program), Rich Fried (just a regular guy), and me (a real folksinger). $5 cover lets you stay the whole night and hear other acts as well. CB's 313 Gallery is at 313 Bowery in Lower Manhattan.

If you want to perform, try to get there by 6:45 for sign-up.

I grew up in Jackson Heights, first on 81st Street between 37th and 35th Avenues -- there is no 36th Avenue in that part of Queens -- and later on 77th Street between 35th and 34th Avenues. I went to PS 69 and later to JHS 145 (now IS 145).

Since Rudy sold the Cafe Greco, there haven't been any folk acts that I know of at that venue, but from what I understand Jackson Heights is still a veritable hotbed of folkdom. You have Eric Levine in the neighborhood, and Susie Tanenbaum, and five -- count 'em, five -- board of directors members of the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club. And you have all that good music at the Renaissance Charter School.

So are you coming to the Sunnyside Song Circle?

Margaret V- I'm not up that way too much these days -- work just wears me out and Steve is retired, so he mostly heads down to the city,-- except for when Steve has a concert -- (Woodstock Chamber Orchestra) -- the next is the first weekend of May. Saturday night in Kingston and Sunday afternoon in Saugerties (an all Mozart concert) Let me know if you're down this way --

with all these people in the NYC to Dutchess County area, we should have a small gathering sometime (when is always the question. Are any of you heading to the Old Songs Festival in June? There are tons of 'catters headed there this year.

We left Chicago to come here in '94. I'm performing, at The Good Coffee House, as the opening act for larry Pattis and El Mcmeen, two superb fingerstyle acoustic guitarists, on Friday, May 4, at 8:00 PM. See my other thread for details. I'd LOVE to see and meet my NYC Mudcat cohorts at the show.

El Mcmeen is a great Celtic fingerstyle guitarist, and Larry is more traditional, and they are both very entertaining and musical. I will play and sing some old fashioned Country Blues. You won't be sorry you came.

New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club has a beautiful new home for our Traditional Folk Music Open Microphone, held on the third Wednesday of each month. Next date is tomorrow: June 20, 2001.

The Triad Lounge
158 West 72nd Street
Near Broadway on the easily accessible and oh-so-hip and trendy Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York City.

Sessions run from 7:00 to 9:45 PM and will begin PROMPTLY! Sign-up starts around 6:45 PM. There is no lottery. Performers appear in order they choose a sign-up. Ask for David Kleiman if you want to perform.

Admission is $5 at the door and everyone must pay, performer or not. Purchase of 2 drinks is expected. This space includes astage, a sound system, wait-staff, and a bartender. Stage time: 2 songs or 8 minutes, whichever come first. If you sign up after #15, you will only get to do 1 song or 4 minutes, so get to the Triad on time. Sign up really late and you may get frozen out all together. Post-session pig-out at a local eatery should also be expected. We'll find a place that pleases both the vegans and the carnivores, as well as everyone in between.

While we bill this as a Traditional Folk Music Open Microphone, feel free to perform whatever music your big old heart desires, including contemporary singer-songwriter material. We are a very accepting crew. However, this is the place where dyed-in-the-wool traddies are both welcome and appreciated. So all you sea chantey fanatics, Child ballad enthusiasts, old-timey banjo pickers and fiddlers, uileann pipers, and acoustic blues juke joint jammers, here's your chance to turn out in force.

I heard a story on NPR this morning that the US Armed Forces is the single the biggest employer of musicians in the USA. 2,000 musicians in the Army alone. By the way, among those who served as a US Army musician is Pete Seeger.

Of course you don't have to take the Royal shilling -- or whatever the US equivalent is -- to play the Triad open mike. Just show up with your pipes in one hand and your five bucks in the other.

Erica,

You missed a really great session, but a truly atypical one. The Triad booked a jazz combo into the lounge, so they moved the open mic into the theatre upstairs, a very classy place. No one bothered enforcing the 2-drink minimum, but I turned up buying three (soft) drinks anyway over the course of the evening. At 7 PM, there were only a handful of us there -- David K., Bob M., Rich F., myself, and a guy from the Bronx also named Steve -- so we started a song circle jam session. It was lots of fun. Over the next hour about a dozen more people drifted in, but David kept as a song circle rather than as a true open mic, a good move on his part. Mostly newcomers, including a young fiddler named Hannah. On one go around we had to sing a song out of our typical genre. For example, Bob did an a capella Scottish drinking song, I did Statesboro Blues, and David sang a song in Hebrew. Towards the end, Ellen W. came with some folks from her songwriters, including Dennis and Val.

We missed you. :-(

MacDougal Street Rent Party asks you to put on your black beret, light up a Gaulois, and let us transport you back to closing days of the Eisenhower era. A rag-tag band of friends have gathered in a rent controlled Greenwich Village pad to make joyful noise the only way they know how. A dollar gets you in, and if you can't afford a dollar, just let everyone take a swig of Mateus from your wine skin. The bathtub is in the kitchen, the toilet is down the hall, the Great Folk Music Revival is about to happen, and you're invited! Can you dig it?

MacDougal Street Rent Party is Joel Landy, Eric Levine, Anne Price, Gina Tlamsa, and Steve Suffet.

The dollar, the Gaulois, and the Mateus are mentioned only by artistic license. There admission for this event is now $5, smoking is no longer permitted, and while you can purchase alcoholic beverages at the bar, you may not bring in any from the outside. Also, we've moved a little bit southeast so we're now doing our thing, so to speak, in NoHo rather than the Village, and we're in a fully licensed club rather than in someone's apartment. Oh my goodness, how things have changed! Just try finding a rent controlled apartment anywhere in New York!

We will also be having with us our good buddies Jane Babits, Toby Fagenson, and Jessica Feinbloom. In addition, each of us will do a song or two individually as well as with the group. So it's going to be one heck of a hoot indeed.

Bathtub in the kitchen...what memories. My first apartment in NYC had a bathtub in the kitchen. It was up on legs and was so tall that the cat box fit underneath it, even with a cat inside. A plywood lid hinged down from the wall to make the only kitchen counter. Toilet was in a tiny closet and you had to be careful of the steam pipe when sitting down.

Lorcan: We don't know what we are doing yet, but if you want to be in one of these CB's 313 Gallery songfests just give me a holler. However, the invitation will be to you as an individual, and it would not extend to your band. After our first show I made a decision that I wasn't going to invite groups to participate, just individuals. Among ourselves we can and do provide whatever instrumental and vocal back-up was need. I thank you for bringing Eric Levine and Gina Tlamsa along as your accompanists for the 2001 Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash, but now they are appearing as Eric Levine and Gina Tlamsa rather than part of Sorcha Dorcha.

I already hear someone asking, "Then what about MacDougal Street Rent Party"? Well, that's a special case because we are a core (corps?) of people who played the last three songfests together and have evolved into a de facto band by chance rather than by design. We all make a strong point of maintaing our own individual musical identities.

KateG: You didn't live at 8 Saint Mark's Place by any chance? You weren't one of my various roommates or roommates' girlfriends by any chance? Your apartment sounds freakishly like mine, down to the bathtub, kitty litter box, and steam pipe! :-)

Greetings:

The Peoples' Voice Cafe, one of New York City's premier folk and acoustic venues, has long been housed in the Workmen's Circle Building at 45 East 33rd Street in Midtown Manhattan. Unfortunately, the building has recently been sold and the Workmen's Circle has until the close of business June 30 to vacate the premises. That leaves the Peoples' Voice Cafe out in the cold. It's currently looking for a new site to reopen in September, and the prospects look good that it will find one nearby. But one thing is certain: the three remaining shows this season will be the last ones at the current location. They will take place Saturday night, May 3, 10, and 17, each beginning at 8:00 o'clock. Doors open at 7:30.

The May 3 show will feature me and my friend Joel Landy, the May 10 show will be a tribute to the late Dave Van Ronk, and the May 17 show will feature the New York City Labor Chorus. Suggested admission is $12 for the general public and $9 for Peoples' Voice Cafe or Workmen's Circle members, but you are welcome to pay whatever you can afford. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
