My son reports that when he attended the Doobie Brothers show as headliners at THIS YEAR'S (!) Gretna Fest (across the River from New Orleans), he could NOT smell any reefer! I'm not sure what to make of this, but it might be a sign of impending apocalypse...

McDonald, incidentally, is not part of the group's current incarnation, who reportedly played and sang very well indeed, prompting a strong response from the crowd (even though the crowd was not, apparently, high on doobies).

A joint was a "doobie" before there was a band called the Doobie Brothers.

The original group was started by Tom Johnston, a kid from Central Valley farm country. It was a straight-ahead party band playing mostly in the San Jose area.

Michael McDonald changed the sound, introduced political songs and sang far too much in his mumbling style.

He should have started another group instead of mangling the Doobies.

Banjoboy, I'll have to disagree with you on that one. I personally think Michael made the group with his soulful voice. Not many white boys sing with that much soul......Jim

Loved the sound of the pre- Michael MacDonald doobies! He must have had a lot of connections in the music buisness to be able to infiltrate the Doobies, and give them that annoying "DISCO" sound. (a pox on him)

I don't know, MT. I was always a Michael McDonald fan. I like Losing Game a lot.

With you all night long.

Easily their best song.

Black Water, by the Doobie Brothers.

Oh, and the lyric is "I'd like to hear some funky dixie-land, pretty mama come and take me by the hand"

Pretty mamma gonna take me by the hand...

Now I realise that this ain't folk, but someone at my gig the other night asked me if I could remember the title of this song and who sang it and I drew a total blank...

And it's been ear-worming me ever since...

Anyone wanna help me put this baby to bed?

;-)
