I promised Bob Web I'd post this. Last year it was very poorly publicized and Curmudgeon and I only found out about it at the last minute. Very glad we went!

SONGS OF SAIL 2001

Fans of traditional sea music will gather again in Kennebunk, Maine, during 15-16 June 2001 when an international crew of shantymen and women gather for "Songs of Sail 2001" at the Brick Store Museum.

The Festival begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 15 with a concert featuring all the festival performers, among them Louis Killen, Jeff Warner, Mystic Seaport's Forebitter, Compass Rose with Dave Peloquin, Celeste Bernardo, and Ellen Cohn. Bob Webb is the Festival Coordinator, and our special guest this year is Martin Hugill, son of shantyman and maritime historian Stan Hugill.

The music will continue throughout the day Saturday at various venues in nearby Kennebunkport, including on board a two-masted sailing schooner that offers harbor and bay tours. The huge "Sailing Time" concert will finish the event at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 16, in the newly refurbished, and beautiful, Kennebunk Town Hall.

A schedule of events and ticketing information can be obtained by contacting The Brick Store Museum, 117 Main Street, Kennebunk ME 04043 USA, by telephone at 207-985-4802, or by e-mail at info@brickstoremuseum.org.

Don't miss this exciting and unique event!

Last year this festival featured 2 reasonably priced concerts and an afternoon of free (free!) workshops with most of the above performers and others. What an incredible experience it was! It's definitely worth attending if you're in New England and have an interest in sea music.

Do people camp or motel or what?

Bob Conroy and I were on the Songs of Sail program last year and had a really great time. A large audience was the ONLY thing missing. It's a lovely festival.

Susan - there was no camping associated with the festival. Therefore it's motel, hotel or b&b (of which there are many). If you camp often and have equipment, you know the "ins and outs" better than I do.

All the best,
Dan

Sounds wonderful. Will try to make it this year. Found out too late last year. It's a great area. The Brick Store Museum is a very nice place. Hope more attend this year.

Definitely hope more people attend this year so the festival will continue. (Though very selfishly I enjoyed last year's low turnout at the workshops.) Even just attending the concerts is a bargain. Great performers, quite a show and a reasonable price.

For more information, I suggest contacted Bob Webb or The Brick Store Museum, 117 Main Street, Kennebunk ME 04043 USA

e-mail at info@brickstoremuseum.org.

Sounds like a good list of performers, and a great opportunity to interact with them in workshop format if you are not too shy. I'm not aware of any campsites within a half hour. Anyone have any suggestions?

I do understand Shanghai Brown does have this nice little pub/B&B in Kennebunkport and I suppose you might try there; I understand he mixes a wicked Singapore Sling.

HI there Bar Goddess!! We (The Johnson Girls) were on the program last year and had a terrific time -- the only thing missing was a large audience -- but it was the first year of the festival - and perhaps this year will be better attended -- get the word out.

Alas, we will not be there this year -- but have a great time!

Well, I DO hang out (and sing!) at The Press Room in Portsmouth, NH . . .

(I guess I'll just have to do another business card, huh.)

Bat Goddess (but I answer to "Hey You.")

Honest-go-goodness, for the first workshop last year, there were more people on stage than in the audience, and I AM NOT EXAGGERATING! We were pretty darned loud for such a small audience, though. It was a wonderful festival music-wise, and promises to remain so..

Jeri - yes, you WERE loud for a small audience -- and very much appreciated!!

Bat Goddess, thanks for posting this thread!

I knew Bob Webb when he lived in Southern California back in the '70s. It's been great to re-establish contact with him. He's a fine singer and I've no doubt that he runs one heck of a festival. I hope there's a great turnout this year.

Richard

Any post-festival gatherings in local pubs? I am tempted to go ...
Cheers,
Brian

Brian - no pubs that I'm aware of where our style of singing happens on a regular basis. However, I'm sure some of us local "runners" would be willing to lead you to a brew-pub where if we have a critical mass we could give it a go.

Cherrily,
Charley aka Roll&Go-C
