Subject: What is the name & what are the rest of
From: flmusicman
Date: 16 Apr 01 - 01:53 PM

About 25 years ago in the Shenandoah Valley I learned these partial lyrics to a song from a man named "Flash" I always found the song fun but can remember the rest of the ltrics or the name of the song. Can any help? I've been playing parts of this song at gatherings for years and noone seem to no anything about it. Lyrics that I know are as follows:

Verse
Some folks, they like whiskey, they say its mighty fine
Some folks, they like moonshine, they drink it up all the time
But my Daddy well he told me "Son, keep your head in line"
Drinkin' that wine, wine, stay drunk all the time.
verse
Look at them luscious little bottles, sittin' up on the shelf
Red and yellow, green and blue they are something else
Something else they mesmorize me, the way they sparkle and shine
Drinkin' that wine, wine, stay drunk all the time.

That all I know, please help me solve this 25 year old mystery.
Thanks

This refrain does sound familar, "Drinkin' that wine, wine, stay drunk all the time" but I can't come up with any further clues.

Gee, that sounds familiar. I'll betcha it's on this list (click). Rick Fielding is singing it to me on the telephone at this very moment. He promises to post the lyrics later. Keep watching this thread.
He says it's from Mickey and Jesse Colin Young, probably called "Wine, Wine, Wine." The Beach Boys recorded a song with that name - is that the one?
-Joe Offer-
Rick says he'll try to remember to sing the song at the beginning of his show, at 7 PM Toronto time this evening, at http://www.ciut.fm/ (click).

I learned it from Mickey Clark of Louisville Tenn. Got a feeling that Jesse Colin Young might have had some input.

I'll print out my lyrics after I get back from doing the radio show.

This was the bridge though:

Start with a snort of that ol' blueberry Port. Bound to ring a bell, then try a glass of that Muscatel.

Then drink a bottle of the cheapest sherry wine...say goodbye to your mind.

Some people drink Champagne, drink it all the time.
Other people drink whiskey, think it's mighty fine.

My Mama she told me "Son don't pay them no mind.
Keep drinkin' that wine wine wine,
keep your head stoned all the time.

Pretty little bottles sittin' on the shelf.
Red green and yellow, they are somethin' else.

They mesmerize me, with their sparkle and shine.
Keep drinkin' that wine wine wine,
keep your head stoned all the time.

Start with a snort of that ol' blueberry Port.
Bound to ring a bell,
then try a glass of that Muscatel.

Then drink a bottle of the cheapest sherry wine...say goodbye to your mind.

While folks around me insist on startin' wars.
Gonna take a little swig of that sparklin' red, and maybe I'll take some more.

And don't you know it, I'm gonna be feelin' just fine.
Drinkin' that wine, wine, wine, keep my brame lame all the time!

***********

Hmmmm, now that I look at the lyrics....It sure as hell ain't Shakespeare. Used to sing it a lot....although I wouldn't know a claret from a chalet. One night at the Tranzac club in Toronto, my friend Mose Scarlett decided to prove that I was faking when I said I wouldn't know the cheapest Scotch from the very best. He insisted I have a sip from five shot glasses. They all tasted like gasoline to me. He and Heather made sure they didn't go to waste. I did notice however that they polished off the stuff that was supposed to be rotgut as well as the good stuff. Gimme Ice Tea..I'm already confused enough without the alcohol.

It's on one of the old Youngbloods' albums, before JCY went solo, I think. At the end of the song, someone says, "Get out the bathtub, Grandma, and take off your socks!" Eeeeeuuuuuwwwwww!

According to AMG, "Wine, Wine, Wine" has been recorded by the Astronauts, Jimmy Binkley, the Classics 5, Commander Cody & The Lost Planet Airmen, Champion Jack Dupree, Bobby Fuller, the Lewallen Brothers, Bobby Osborne, the Outsiders, the Readymen, Freddie Roach, the Sir Douglas Quintet, Dale Watson, J. Frank Wilson & The Cavaliers, and the Yettimen. I didn't have the stamina to follow up all these leads. Maybe somebody else will. Authorship is credited to various people or nobody in particular, so it isn't clear whether these people all recorded the same song, different versions of the same song, or totally different songs that happened to have the same title.

Floyd Dixon recorded "Wine, Wine, Wine" in 1952. It has been re-released on the anthology "Jump Blue: Rockin' the Jooks," Blue Note CD #54364, 1999, and a couple of other CD's. Authorship is credited to "Davis/Dixon". A sound sample is available at http://www.emimusic.de/xml/7/3200467/8543642.html

"... tight, tight.
'Cause when I get it, feels so doggone fine."

The single "Wine, Wine, Wine" was a hit for the Nightcaps, and led to their releasing an LP called "Wine, Wine, Wine" in 1962. The album has been re-released as Collectables CD #5766, 1998. I transcribed this much from the sound sample at CDNOW:

"Drinkin' wine, wine, wine
A-drinkin' wine, wine, wine
A-drinkin' wine, wine, fine wine, all the time.

Now, Get it on, get it on, all night long,
Get it on, get it on, all night long
Drinkin' wine, wine, wine
A-drinkin' wine, wine, wine
A-drinkin' wine, wine, fine wine, all the time."

A lot of people have recorded variations of the same basic song, and many have claimed copyright on their particular version. I would advise caution if you plan to record it. Although a public domain version might exist, it would take a lot of research to determine exactly which lines, if any, are in the public domain. I just spent a lot of time listening to samples, and here are some variants I heard: (Sorry, I didn't always keep track of who sang what.)

CHORUS 1: Give me wine, wine, wine
Give me wine, wine, wine,
Give me wine, wine, wine, wine all the time.

CHORUS 2: Drinkin' wine, wine, wine,
A-drinkin' wine, wine, wine,
A-drinkin' wine, wine, fine wine all the time.
[or "We're gonna have a real big time drinkin' wine."]
[or "'Cause when I get it, I feel so doggone fine."—Floyd Dixon]

Go to school, 'long 'round nine (or "quarter to nine").
I git (or "sit" or "stand") in the corner and I drink my wine.

You get your girl, 'n' I'll get mine.
We'll go out and buy some wine [or "drink that wine"].

You get a nickel. I'll get a dime.
We'll go out and [we'll] buy some wine.

We went a-drinkin' (or "I drank") last night and the night before.
Goin' out tonight, gonna drink [or "get stoned"] some more.

Well, a little bit o' wine is never bad.
People drink wine to keep from feelin' sad. [Floyd Dixon]

You get a nickel. I'll get a quarter.
We'll all go out with the farmer's daughter. [Bobby Fuller]

*

Dale Watson and His Lone Stars sing a totally different song called WINE WINE WINE, which Dale Watson wrote.

Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen sing another totally different song called WINE WINE WINE, written by Billy C Farlow and George Frayne.

Jimmy Binkley wrote and recorded another totally different song called WINE WINE WINE.

I think the lyrics a lot of you may be looking for are from "The Wine Song" off the Youngbloods' Earth Music albume back in the 70s. Here the are:

The Wine Song

Some folks like whiskey, whiskey's mighty fine.
Some folks like moonshine, Lord they, drink it all the time.
My daddy taught me, said, "Son, only way to keep your head in line.
Drink-a that wine wine, wine,
keep your, head stoned all the time." – (That's what he said…)

Look at them luscious little bottles, sittin' up on the shelf,
Red green and yellow, Lord, they are somethin' else, hmmm.
They mesmerize me, thy way they sparkle and shine.
Drink-a that wine wine, wine,
keep your, head stoned all the time.

Bridge:
One snort of Ruby Port, really rings the bell,
Then a glass of Muscatel, sets my head up well,
Then this sweetest bottle of cheapest sherry wine...I say goodbye to my mind.

While folks around me, insist on startin' wars,
Fightin' and a-hollerin,' gettin' awful sore,
Gotta take some business, I don't pay them no mind.
Drink-a that wine wine, wine,
keep your, head stoned all the time. – (Tell the truth…)

Break

(Spoken) Get out the bathtub, grandma, and take off your socks!

It's "politics and business", not "gotta take some business".
