I am looking for the composer and title of this song I heard on a recording years ago. I believe the composer is from the UK but I'm not positive. Thanks for your help!

It appears that Allison has recently recorded this song for CeltArctic Music (Canada), and needs title and copyright status.  James Gordon of CeltArctic has just posted a request for information to the Ballad-L list, so I thought I'd refresh this thread.  Allison apparantly learnt the song from a record some years ago -sounds vaguely 60s/ 70s.  I've found precisely nothing about it anywhere; perhaps someone else will be more successful?  It must ring a bell for somebody...

Yes, I have looked for this one. I thought a while back I ran across the phrase "black is no color/colour for a bride" but now I can't find anything.......Maybe we should contact Lesley or Bruce by e mail? I know it doesn't sound particularly "old"......who is our resident Modern Ballad ex-spurt? Sounds Irish to me.....

Bruce has already replied via Ballad-L, to the effect that some of it sounds more like a pop song than a traditional piece.  There's some borrowing from traditional idiom (it would sing to Here's Adieu To All Judges and Juries, for example) but I too suspect "contemporary folk", as we used to call it.  There were a lot of people writing in that sort of style 30-odd years back, and it could as easily be English or American as Irish.  It also seems to be quite obscure, so we'll probably just have to hope that someone stops by who happens to recognise it...

Oh, I misread the question from James Gordon, by the way; he's the record's producer, but there's no connection with CeltArctic; they just forwarded the message from a Canadian newsgroup.

Not Irish to my knowledge and I have no idea where it might be found - has use been made of performing rights organisations? I too find its language "untraditional" though it's a nice song and well suited to our time and style of thought. It starts rather abruptly - might there have been other verse(s) before those given?

Not sure how helpful this is after 16 years but I have this on a Paul Downes LP and the title is listed as 'My True Love' and the composer as A Mannering

My wife and I recorded this with Commonground couple of years ago, we contacted Paul Downes and he got approval from Adrian Mannering. A lovely chorus and a staple of our set for years. The sleeve notes read "Song of love torn by civil war"
