Subject: Blue Peter dog dies From: Firecat Date: 19 Apr 01 - 01:01 PM I'm sure some of the British catters watch or used to watch the TV show Blue Peter. Those of you who do or did will most likely remember Bonnie, who joined the programme in 1986 when her mother Goldie left. I was watching Newsround when I heard the sad news that she has passed away. She appeared in 1,150 programmes and was on the show for 12 years. She was 20. She will be greatly missed by all fans of the programme. |

Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: Amergin Date: 19 Apr 01 - 01:10 PM 20? that was one ancient dog.... And here I was thinking a thread about Pene..... |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: Firecat Date: 19 Apr 01 - 01:15 PM I know she was old, Amergin. That's why she'll be missed by so many people, cos LOADS of people were viewers when she was on the programme, myself included. I was upset when she left in 1998. |

Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: GUEST Date: 19 Apr 01 - 01:25 PM Sorry to hear that - Blue Peter was a favourite. The only dogs I remember were Petra and (I think) Shep. Probably dates me. Rana |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: Firecat Date: 19 Apr 01 - 01:30 PM Well, Rana, do you remember John Noakes crying on TV when he announced the death of Shep? Well, Kate Sanderson was a bit like that when she was saying about Bonnie. |

Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: Jon Freeman Date: 19 Apr 01 - 01:47 PM That is a shame Firecat. I remember Petra too! I may be wrong but I think John Noaks' first dog was Patch. Jon |

Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: Jon Freeman Date: 19 Apr 01 - 02:04 PM Blue Peter Pets Jon |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: Firecat Date: 19 Apr 01 - 03:02 PM Yeah, John Noakes started off with Patch, but when he died, Shep replaced him. |

Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: tiggerdooley Date: 19 Apr 01 - 03:51 PM Goodbye, Bonnie. Was she really 20? I'm sure I remember her being born, and I don't think I was as young as three. I remember the kids writing in with names for the litter, and when the presenters took her out to be trained. Some of her brothers and sisters went on to be guide dogs for the blind. She was gorgeous, really sweet, so was Goldie. Was Goldie Bonnie's Mum? I'm not sure. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: Liz the Squeak Date: 19 Apr 01 - 05:04 PM Yes, Goldie was Bonnie's mum, all her other puppies went to Guide Dogs for the Blind and got puppy walked on the programme. Dated by remembering Petra? Anyone else remember Jason the Siamese cat?? LTS |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: Jon Freeman Date: 19 Apr 01 - 05:15 PM Yes Liz. Have you tried the link I gave? It has all pets past and present. Jon |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: tiggerdooley Date: 19 Apr 01 - 05:16 PM Don't remember Jason, Liz. Are Kari and Oke still going? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: GUEST,Rana Date: 19 Apr 01 - 05:18 PM Firecat, I can imagine John crying but I can't actually remember - it's a very understandable reaction. LTS, yep, remember Jason. Jon's link also reminded me of Freda the tortoise. The bit on Petra there mentioned that the dog we all grew to know was a replacement for the original puppy which died after one appearance - I didn't know that. The producers spent a long time looking for a similar looking puppy. Rana |

Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: tiggerdooley Date: 19 Apr 01 - 05:33 PM I Remember John Noakes announcing that Shep had died. It was on 'Fax', the Bill Oddie show. My Dad and I really felt for him. We've all lost a pet we love. My one and only was Basil, my hamster. She was a nutter! I was so upset when she died that I've never had another pet, I've just had 'shares' in family and friends' pets. I am thinking of getting a little pet, though. Maybe a hamster... |

Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: GUEST,alison Date: 19 Apr 01 - 08:39 PM I remember Jason, and Petra, (but weren't there 2 Petra's.. the first puppy died and the replaced it)... there were supposed to have been a few Sheps too....... but what I thought was mean (if it was true) was that John Noakes wasn't allowed to keep Shep after he left the program........... I loved the "Go with Noakes" programs... slainte alison |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: Firecat Date: 19 Apr 01 - 08:48 PM Yep, tiggerdooley, Kari and Oke are still going strong. I flicked up the Ceefax page about Bonnie's death and it says that a tribute show for her will be shown on Wednesday 25 April (next Wednesday). |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: Firecat Date: 19 Apr 01 - 08:54 PM Alison, John Noakes was allowed to keep Shep after he left the programme. The production team thought it wouldn't be fair to split the pair of them up so John took Shep. |

Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: GUEST,alison Date: 19 Apr 01 - 08:56 PM found the following article about John Noakes........ for any of you who remember the Cresta Bob-sled run.. this will bring back memories

Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: GUEST,alison Date: 19 Apr 01 - 10:06 PM not that I remember and certainly not while they were on air.. it was all done "live" back then........ slainte alsion |

Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: Firecat Date: 20 Apr 01 - 05:31 AM Most of BP's done live now!! As is demonstrated by several appearances on Auntie's Bloomers and Wednesday's appearance on TV Nightmares, when Matt and Simon couldn't get the doors open to let in the Band of the Scots Dragoons!! |

Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 20 Apr 01 - 05:54 AM I haven't watched it for years but there was a time when my shift hours meant I watched it about once a week. My abiding memories were not of the pets but of Sarah Greene in a wetsuit exploring the Mary Rose ( I watched it for the marine interest) and once Anthea Turner in a swimsuit on Aitutaki (as I'd been to the Cook Islands I was interested in their tree planting project). RtS (Methinks the man protests too much!) |

Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: Wotcha Date: 20 Apr 01 - 09:46 AM Thanks for reminding me of a long-distant black and white show I used to watch occasionally in the 60s ... Alison, the piece on John Noakes was pretty good. Brit-TV nostalgia is greate: Time to revive the 60s show "Robinson Crusoe" ... I loved the theme tune. Cheers, Brian |

Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: Gervase Date: 20 Apr 01 - 10:46 AM John Noakes was a sly old bugger - a good friend of mine was on the programme yonks back when she was in the British gymnastic team, and endured a serious groping from him! It certainly wasn't Shep that needed to get down that day! But my favourite was always Valerie Singleton - I had my first crush on her (swoon), although when testosterone really started kicking in I was seduced by Magpie on the other side, because the presenter didn't wear a bra (heck, I was a sad old git even as puberty was kicking me in the nadgers!). I remember getting a Blue Peter badge for making a dinosaur collage out of eggboxes (I was about six at the time, I say in my defence). I didn't get to go on the show, more's the pity, but I treasured the badge for years, and wore it until the painted blue ship wore clean away and it was just a white plastic shield. And then I grew up (sort of), discovered girls and booze and lost my badge. Ho hum. |

Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: GUEST,jayohjo in Russia Date: 21 Apr 01 - 07:10 AM Well, I'll just say from having spent a week's work experiance at the BBC a few years ago, just before Richard Bacon got done for doing large quantities of coke, the cameramen warned me to keep away from him for similar reasons - so Gervase, not only John Noakes was a sly old bugger! jayohjo XX |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: Firecat Date: 21 Apr 01 - 12:59 PM Nice one, jayohjo! Gervase, I'm a BP badge winner too! I got mine for sending in a letter about Katy Hill doing a bit of archaeology in York. She found a thing exactly like I'd found in a field down the lane, and it turned out to be a Victorian medicine bottle. I wrote in and told them about that and a few other things I'd found, then forgot about the letter. A couple of months later I got home from school (I was in Year 8 at the time (13)) and Mum gave me the letter. I looked at it, wondering why Blue Peter was writing to me, opened it and my badge fell out. I couldn't believe it!! I wore it to school on the Monday and my best friend at the time, a lad called Jamie, was really jealous cos he'd written in to Blue Peter loads of times and never got a badge and I'd only written in once and I'd got a badge and it wasn't fair nyahnyahnyahnyahnyah!!! IT WAS BRILLIANT!!!!! BTW, if any young Catters get a Blue Peter badge, the Abbey House Museum is highly recommended. They treat you like a presenter! |

Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: Liz the Squeak Date: 21 Apr 01 - 02:37 PM I saw John Noakes expose his arse on air, he showed the nation the bruise he got from the Cresta Run, all down his right buttock and thigh... the embarassing thing was, he now admits, was not showing his arse on live children's TV, but the fact that he had dressed in the dark that morning and put on a pair of his wife's knickers! (OH YEAH, IN THE DARK EH??) He was also exposed as a cheat on 'Go with....' when he admitted to not walking all the Pennine Way and to not camping, but staying in hotels and B&B's along the way, who were sworn to secrecy..... He still remains the favourite presenter though, who else would do such stupid things as climb Nelson's column and sky dive with the Red Devils? LTS |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: alison Date: 22 Apr 01 - 02:25 AM I have a blue Peter vdeo with all the old stuff in in... Nelson's column.. the Red Devils.. the Cresta Run..... and of course the baby elephant....... great TV moments..... I'm sure it's still available from any BBC shops.... slainte alison |

Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: Firecat Date: 25 Apr 01 - 08:07 AM BTW, the Blue Peter tribute to Bonnie is on tonight at 5pm and repeated tomorrow moring t 8 oclock. |

Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: alison Date: 25 Apr 01 - 08:11 PM did they ever dig up the time capsule? I rememeber them planting it... wasn't it supposed to be opened in 2000? what was in it? slainte alison |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: Firecat Date: 26 Apr 01 - 04:55 AM Yeah, they did. They dug up BOTH of them, cos if you remember, when the time capsule had to be moved due to building work in 1984 (my birth year! How time flies!) the presenters then (Simon Groom, Janet Ellis and Christopher Wenner, I think it was) buried another one. Anyway, in the box buried in 1971, they had:- A Blue Peter Book A full set of Blue Peter mini books A set of decimal coins (cos '71 was the year they were introduced) A piece of film from that day's programme Photos of all the presenters and pets A full set of Blue Peter badges (not including the Green badge cos that wasn't thought up until 1989) A tape with all the presenters saying "Hello", Petra barking and Jason meowing. I think that's the lot. I can't remember what was in the 1984 box though, sorry!! They dug the boxes up in January 2000, with Stuart Miles, Katy Hill, Konnie Huq and Simon Thomas from the current presenting team (It's changed now cos Katy and Stuart have left and been replaced with Liz Barker and Matt Baker), John Noakes, Peter Purves and Valerie Singleton from the 1971 presenting team, and Simon Groom, Janet Ellis and Chris Wenner from the 1984 presenting team. Unfortunately, the 1971 box, although it was lead-lined, had been completely waterlogged, so that didn't help!! I think that the stuff out of both boxes is now exhibited in the BBC Experience museum in London. I might be wrong here, but I think that BP badge winners get in free. I've not got the latest free admission list though, I've only got the one from 1997, when I actually won my badge. BTW, I heard on the radio a while ago that somebody had won a badge but had either lost it or all the blue came off the ship. They apparently wrote to the programme, who checked they had really won a badge and weren't just lying. The person had, so the programme sent them a replacement badge! Not bad, eh! |

Subject: RE: BS: Blue Peter dog dies From: Firecat Date: 26 Apr 01 - 04:57 AM I forgot to ask, did anyone actually see the tribute to Bonnie yesterday? I did, and I was just wondering if anyone knows who Matt was cuddling, cos I've never seen that dog before. I've seen Lucy and Mabel before though!! |
