Here's a link to the old thread.

Tree just handed me a plate of dessert. I'm never going to admit it out loud but she is a better cook than I am.

Men! Isn't that just like them? Ask them politely to do something and they can't be bothered. Mention the slight chance of shall we say "physical enjoyment" and they're ALL over it! *VBG* Just kidding, guys! We love you for your musical talents as well.

Slight chance ? Stop using sex as a weapon ( Pat Benitar ? ) and you'll get more "something" done than you thought possible. And I'm not going near the musical talent stuff.

So why is it that guys who would never be caught dead cooking in the kitchen are the ones most addicted to outdoor grilling and barbecuing?

Because it gives them a chance to do two things their mothers never would allow them to do: play with fire and play with their food at the same time.

I know plenty of guys who like to/can cook. I wouldn't call myself a "good cook" because I pretty much do it by the seat of my pants--I'm never really sure what or how much of it went into something--but almost everything I've done has come out A-OK (to the never-ending astonishment of my mother, who considers me hopelessly un-domestic). Maybe I'm just lucky.

Nevertheless, it is time-consuming and any man that chains me to the stove gets a burner-tattoo on his forehead.

C'mon Karen. Any real man - or woman - knows what you meant. Back rubs ? I can get a reasonable back rub on the door frame.

Why do men enjoy BBQing ? Because it gets them away from the wife for a brief respite from all that nagging doublespeak crap and they can listen to Pat Benitar if they like.

Alex... if your BBQ is not very old, the food will taste better as time goes on as long as you use it often and clean only the grill. When you replace the lava rocks, replace only two thirds at a time. This will retain the "flavour" built up in the dirty rocks.

GUEST Karen:

About thirty-eight years ago, on about my third date with the lovely lady who is my wife now, I invited her to my apartment for dinner. I served her chilled orange-and-carrot soup, a cheese souffle, and a dessert I forget now. I also forget what the wine was.

Some years later she confided to me that, although she didn't say so at the time, that was the night she decided she was going to marry me.

I have impressed a number of women with my Partridge Stew but none of them were impressed with my seemingly constant absence from the first of October to the end of November combined with my inability to take any vacation during the rest of the year becasue my work was too important to take any time off for vacations "together".

I did take my ex on a luxury wilderness vacation experience during one October, but she wanted to go home after the very first night of our environmental adventure just becasue a pack of eastern brush wolves got curious when she went behind my thirteen foot travel trailer after dark to experience the call of nature in the wilds. Hell, I even gave her my old twenty guage for her birthday so she'd feel safe when she went to pee in the dark.

You just can't please some women.

I'll bring the wine and corner mousethief's wife so she can tell me just how she got her husband to do all this cooking for her. I could use some tips and she seems to be the girl with the answers.

Actually the thing that probably clenched it for my wife, back when she was just somebody I was meeting for the second time, was taking her up to Mt. Rainier with a ice chest full of sandwich fixin's and my guitar. We sat underneath the glacier with the cool wind blowing through the thin mountain sunshine, munching turkey sandwiches, while I serenaded her with folk music.

Take it from me, guys -- you don't need to know how to cook.

Although I do. Very well, in fact. For which fact I thank my grandmother (God rest her soul).

Karen... wine goes with sauted partridge. A dry German white, to be exact. Snarples with, before actually, the stew. Bring some OJ, black rum and a jar of Marichino ( sp ? ) cherries. Mixed correctly, tis a wonderful libation that soothes the tummy as well as the spirit.

We could have both, as I fancy myself as wily as a fox when it comes to partridge and have a freezer full to prove it. Funny, that doesn't seem to impress very many women.

On a similar note, I have a friend who is a perpetual bachelor, very much against his will. The sort of guy who can get a first date with any unattached woman on the planet (he's very good-looking and charming on a first impression) but can't seem to get a 2nd date for the life of him.

Back me up here, now. His bathroom at home is a total mess; the inside of the toilet is black, there is a five-year buildup of electric razor stubble in the sink, and the bathtub looks like it's growing the hair that the stubble in the sink is cut from.

I told him if he wants to get a woman, he needs to clean his bathroom.

HE said that he doesn't bring them to his apartment, why should it matter?

I told him that women can tell if you're the type to clean your bathroom or not. Some sixth sense.

Who's right, me or him?

I have slob type buddies like that too. They're the ones who make all kinds of comments about my spotless house, like, "Your gonna make someone a good housewife someday." When they start that crap, I tell them the next session is at their place and they back up a bit. Course, even if the lads did make a mess at their place, it probably wouldn't be noticed.

Alex tell your friend I said YOU'RE right. However... I myself am fastidious about some things, but housekeeping ain't one of them. Anyway a woman doesn't want to have to clean up after a man, especially if she's like me and has enough trouble cleaning up after herself. I subscribe to Oscar Wilde's philosophy that we were meant for better things than pushing around dirt. I will clean up when we have company, though. :-)

Yeah when there's company coming even the teenagers chip in and pick up their personal belongings from the front hallway. :-)

I proposed just today, to my wife, that we get a bunch of 55 gallon drums, mark each with a name of one of the kids, and when they leave stuff around the house, just throw it into the drum. Then if they ask, "Hey! Where's my

favorite sweater
Algebra book
PE uniform
soccer candy bars
trombone"

we can just say, "look in the barrel."

Alex :-)

Gnu, don't feel too bad. We had already fallen in love at-a-distance before we first met. It was an internet romance, don'tcha know. Well, this was before the internet as we now know it. It was a BBS-repeater romance. True geek material.

That is sooo sweet! Now I confused though. Was that 55 1-gallon drums or 55-gallon drums. You're not running an orphanage there, are you? Also, would it be okay if I just stuck my kids in their respective drums before they made a mess? It seems that would solve alot of problems up front.

It's FIVE 55-gallon drums, one for each kid in our "blended" family.

You do wahtever you want with your kid, as long as your social worker (1) doesn't mind, or (2) doesn't find out, or (3) doesn't exist.

Roses or a twenty guage ? I would never give one of my twenties to a woman unless it was true love and I knew she felt the same way. I am hopeless romantic myself, but not an ardent fool.

Alex, sounds like you are a lucky guy. Good on ya. True love is hard enough to find. True romance is even harder.

Hi guys, it's me again. I hate to be a bother but do any of you have a bit of chloroform I could borrow? I got my six-year-old in her drum with no problem at all. Just threw some of her toys in and she followed like a lamb. My ten-year-old is giving me a bit of trouble though. Something about "not going anywhere he can't plug in his N64 system". If he gives me much more grief I won't be able to get to Alex's in time for dinner!

Karen, as a social worker I have to say that I have grave concerns regarding the advisability of raising your children in barrels....unless, of course, you live somewhere remote where the noise won't bother the neighbours. With respect to cloroform, may I suggest a small lump hammer applied lightly to the cranium until the bleating stops? I have always found that quite efficacious in these situations.

I got lucky, and also married a man who likes to cook, and is really great at it, BUT the kitchen is a true disaster afterwards. I am not the best about consistently cleaning it up, though I am trying to do better. However, that said, I do most of the carpentry around the house (it's a typical Vermont 30-year project) and the vetting during lambing.

I must admit, though, unless I missed something, that I do feel there IS a problem Karen presented. WHY does her husband cook occaisionally for himself and the kids, but NOT her??!! I am more than a bit appalled at such behavior. Am I out of line here in a thread that has become a fairly happy bit of persiflage? And how does one handle something about that? I know someone mentioned talking about division of chores, but there are skills everyone should have and be ready to share with their family at least!

Softly now. Push the submit button.

I am listening to Buddy Whassisname and the Other Fellas right now. I'm sure if I was there and put on "Chainsaw Earle" for dinner music, it would contribute to the atmossshhhhphere. Have a Snarple or two for me. I'm off to seek enlightenment with Buddy Whassisname and the Other Fellas and Alfred Lamb for a bit.

CHILLED ORANGE AND CARROT SOUP

3 T butter
1/2 C. chopped onion
3 bunches of small carrots, thinly sliced
2 C. water
1-1/2 C. orange juice
Salt and pepper to taste
1 C light cream
dash nutmeg
finely chopped chives for garnish

Saute the chopped onion in the 3 T butter. Add the 3 bunches of carrots, the water, the orange juice and the salt and pepper to taste. Cook the carrots until tender. Puree the soup when cool in a blender, or rub it through a sieve. If it is too thick, thin it with orange juice to the desired consistency. Cool the soup and chill it. Stir in 1 cup light cream and season with a dash of nutmeg. Garnish each serving with finely chopped chives. Serves 6.

See? I wasn't making it up!

Never doubted you for a minute, oud sauw. I want to try it for myself; sounds intriguing!

Now, what constitutes a "bunch of small carrots"? Is that about 1/2 lb. American? 1/3 lb? 1 lb?

Sorry none of you could make it for supper. We decided to forget the strog. and ended up with macaroni and cheese instead. Bowtie pasta, little flecks of ham. Loverly.

Alex, I translated "a small bunch" as the technical cooking term, "about that many."

Actually, if you make it a little too thick you can always "water" it down with orange juice.

Obviously many Mudcat Men have figured out that cooking is a socially acceptable way to play with knives and fire. (Thanks, gnu, I'll be adding "their food" to the list as well.)
Morticia, Mark Twain once advised that boys be placed in a barrel from the ages of seven I think) through twelve, receiving food, etc. through the bung hole. When he was asked what should be done when the lads reached the age of twelve, he replied, "Put in the bung, of course."

Yo !!!! What culinary delight is for our evening repast ce soir ? I just got back from a wild session with three Scots pipers and two drummers - not Hranners, real pipe band drummers. Tapped my feet, clap my hands, and ENJOYED.

I am jacked for a really good scoff. Who's got a recipe ? Last night was the delicious chilled orange and carrot soup, which I shall be giving a whirl soon.

I don't have a dozen roses or even a partridge to give away to the "Chef Soiree", but that shouldn't deter the spirit.... let's have another recipe, anyone ?

Broccoli Tofu...

One or two heads of broccoli, steamed until tender and broken into bite sized bits
One pound of tofu, crumbled
Butter or margarine
Salt and pepper to taste

Mix everything together on medium heat until the tofu is hot. Enjoy!

Back when my son was young, and I was oh so earnest about feeding him healthy food, I would try to sneak tofu into the spaghetti sauce as a thickener. Nope, didn't work.
He has a good nose, and a great sense of taste. Should be a wine tester --or a chef...

Anyway, a nice snack is a shrimp rollup.
take a lebanese flatbreak or anything similar, pull it into two halves and fill it with a shrimp mixture:

a handful of cooked, or canned shrimp, chopped or whole.
a dollop of mayonnaise, the real stuff, NOT low fat. a bit of salt, pepper and paprika--and if you have it, saffron!
Add some finely shredded lettuce, rollup, and eat with your favorite drink...beer or white wine is good!

Broccoli Tofu is great! We eat it fairly often. Sometimes we sautee it with some mushrooms instead of steaming it, using balsamic vinegar in place of most of the oil. Try tossing in a handful of raw almonds, or some red pepper flakes if you want spicy food. Or add a bit of steamed yam. The folks I work with think I am very strange because I eat a baked tofu sandwich almost every day for lunch. Yumm! (heh heh heh . . .)

Last night I sauteed some onion, garlic, and mushrooms in balsamic vinegar. Added a bunch of chopped asparagus and some fresh roma tomatoes at the last minute. Served it over spinach pasta with a little pesto. It was really good. There's enough left over to have tonight as well. Yumm!

John P, please tell me how you bake your tofu. Do you marinate it first? I haven't baked tofu in a while, but I used to freeze tofu and thaw it out to make it porous, and then I'd marinate slices of it in sesame oil, soy sauce, salt and ginger, and then bake it. It was pretty good, but I've been wondering if there's a better way.

I had a dream last night about picking asparagus. Probably Freudian or something.

CarolC, I start with extra firm tofu, wrap it in a towel and press it to remove as much excess moisture as possible. Slice it into 1/4" slabs and lay them on a cookie sheet with a thin coat of olive oil on it. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes, flip the slices and bake for another 10 minutes. The olive oil gives the tofu a hint of flavor and a bit of surface, without making it strongly flavored the way it gets if you marinate it. I put it on a sandwich with some sort of fancy mustard and dill pickles. I do a very similar marinate to yours when I want more of a dinner meal sort of thing with more flavor instead of sandwich fixins.

John
