John Roberts and Tony Barrand have a good version recorded on one of their albums---can't remember which one. You can reach them through a search for their names or by searching for Golden Hind Records.

Very approximate

A mother was washing her baby one night
twas the youngest of twelve and a delicate mite
the mother was poor and the baby was thin
was nout but a skelington coverd with skin
The mother looked round for the soap of the rack
she was only one second but when she looked back
the baby was gone and in anguish she cried
oh where has my baby gone - the angels replied
your baby is washed down the plughole
your baby is washed down the drain
the poor little thing was so skinny and thin it should have been washed in a jar
your baby is perfectly happy it won't want for baths anymore
i'ts a mucking about with the angels above
not lost but gone before
but gone before

eric.

Quite a few, as it happens.  People are on a hiding to nothing trying to search for this one by title.   the plug finds all...

TUNE ADD Dahn the plughole
Lyr Req: My baby got washed down the plughole
Lyr Req: a mothers lament
Anybody know this song?

Here's a shorter address.

Martin Carthy sang this on Hootenanny in London, a record released in 1964.

Garry

PS. Can you play a ukelele plangently? :)

Oh, and there was an earlier thread about this song, I think.

It's a funny song from music hall, and it was written that way for fun.

Ah, memories, memories - I remember hearing Cream in the Roundhouse in London some time in the middle of the last century and Eric Clapton performed Dahn the Glugole, accompanying himself plangently on the ukelele, which he then smashed up Who-style, and tried to set on fire with Swan Vesta matches.

Just a query but why is it listed as 'Dahn the plug 'ole' and not Down the plug hole. I am aware that as many of the music hall songs were made famous in London there may have been a tendency to pronounce the words that way but that would also be true of many other words in the song eg. gone would have been sung gorn. Why not just leave the words written correctly and allow the singer to pronounce them as he/she would normally rather than imposing a false accent. Might make searching easier too!:)

Its in the database, under the title 'Dahn the Plug 'Ole', the easiest way to find it is look through the titles starting with 'D'.

Sorry I'm not familiar with the song. The topmost thread here, "Mudcat FAQ - Newcomer's Guide," may help you find it if it's in the database/archives here. Another avenue to explore is the search engine Google, www.google.com.
