So "hockey" for Americans means the version they play on skates, which we'd call Ice Hockey. Presumably ordinary hockey is called "field hockey" or something in the USA?

I believe that Hockey has been called "Ice Hockey" in many parts of the U.S. too. This is probably changing due to the large number of Professional teams that have started in areas of the U.S. that up until recently had little or no knowledge of the game.

And you're right. At least here in Canada we refer to the other game (which is very rare here) as Field Hockey.

Yup, field hockey. And there's also Roller Hockey here in the states--hockey on in-line skates. We like ice hockey, but we've got no ice. *grins* I was a vicious lineman on my school's roller hockey team.
