Subject: Miss The Mississippi From: harpgirl Date: 22 Apr 01 - 12:58 PM Miss The Mississippi by Bill Halley I'm growing tired of the big city lights Tired of the glamour and tired of the sights In all my dreams I am roaming once more Back to my home on the old river shore I am sad and weary, far away from home Miss the Mississippi and you Days are dark and dreary Everywhere I go Miss the Mississippi and you Roaming the wide world over Always alone and blue Nothing seems to cheer me under heaven's door Miss the MIssissippi and you 1932 Southern Music Publishing Co. Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Miss The Mississippi From: Stewie Date: 22 Apr 01 - 08:58 PM In August 1932, Jimmie Rodgers recorded the longer version posted by Spaw - he must have had it pretty hot off the press because Noland Porterfield (Rodgers' biographer) said Rodgers had been carrying it around in his briefcase for some time. Rodgers changed 'roamin'' to 'rollin'' and added his famous blue yodel in 2 places. Rodgers' version may be found on volume 7 of the Rounder set: Jimmie Rodgers 'No Hard Times, 1932' Rounder CD 1062. Rodgers also recorded another of Halley's compositions: 'Roll Along, Kentucky Moon'. --Stewie. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Miss The Mississippi From: Joe Offer Date: 20 Apr 03 - 02:19 AM Hi, Jill - I added crosslinks on the top of this thread. There are some longer versions of the song in this thread (click) - all variations on the same song written by Bill Halley, also known as William H Heagney. I couldn't find a copyright date, but the other thread says Jimmie Rodgers recorded it in 1933. Oh, up above Spaw says the copyright is 1932. I guess we ought to believe him. -Joe Offer- |
