My mate's nan had it on 78 when I was a kid - we used to play it a lot. It was Bobbin up and down but no idea who sang it.

I have a Dublin version .... not children's lyrics!

Well I went for a booze one day
To the Wren's Nest on the quay
I couldn't walk
I could barely talk
Sure me whole body did sway
Up comes a civic guard And he asks "what is amiss"
Well I kept noddin
He thought I was coddin
I was bobbin up and down like this.

WOULD THAT BE WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR? I have a few other verses!

Subject: Lyr Add: BOBBIN' UP AND DOWN (Esrom/Morse)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 14 Jan 16 - 12:30 AM

I ran across the sheet music at, of all places, MIT. Sadly, it doesn't seem to be the song anyone was looking for.

BOBBIN' UP AND DOWN
Words, D. A. Esrom (1890-1953), music, Theodore F. Morse (1873-1924)
New York: Theodore Morse Music Co., ©1913.

1. Come on and take a trip
On a funny little ship
And sail away, sail away.
Don't even stop to pack.
We'll grab a taxi-hack
And leave today, leave today.
Hear that siren sigh.
Let's go, you and I,
Where the breeze is blowing and the waves roll high.

CHORUS: We'll go out on the ocean,
Bobbin' up and down, bobbin' up and down.
Oh, what a motion,
Bobbin' up and down, bobbin' up and down!
It's a funny ship,
And you'll take a dip
In the briny, honey, if your feet should slip.
All the chairs and dishes
Are bobbin' up and down, bobbin' up and down.
Even the fishes
Are bobbin' up and down.
See the captain and the crew,
Ev'rybody, even you,
Keep bobbin', bobbin', bobbin' up and down.

2. Oh, honey, take a look
At the roly-poly cook
And cabin boy, cabin boy.
That sailor on the mast
Is holding mighty fast,
Just like a toy, like a toy.
They keep going roun',
Bobbin' up an down.
You won't see a thing like that in our home town. CHORUS

i thought this was a song about PM's question time or general Houses of Parliament procedure in debates. Disappointed it's not. maybe a parody is called for..

Here's the version that has come to me. A friend of mine learned it about 40 years ago from an old, blind singer from Wexford (south east corner of Irealnd). The places named are in that area - The Wren's Nest is a pub on the quay in Wexford town - still there.

BOBBIN' UP AND DOWN LIKE THIS

I went for a booze one day
To The Wren's Nest on the quay
I could hardly walk
I could hardly talk
My whole body did sway
Up comes a civic guard And he sez "now what's amiss?"
Yerra I started noddin'
And I taught he was coddin'
I was bobbin' up and down like this.

Chorus.
I was bobbin' up and like
Bobbin' up and down like this
yerra I started noddin'
Sure I thought he was coddin' I was bobbin up and like this.

He boldly turned me loose
When he heard my fine excuse
I was a fitter who had to see a barber
To get my beard reduced.
The barber lathered me
And I began to whist
Sure the barber couldn't shave me
And he had to run and leave me
I was bobbin' up and down like this.

Chorus:

I'm a whitewasher by trade
But a bad one I'm afraid
I got a job for fifteen bob
Unto a rustic maid
She pointed up and down
Saying "there's a place you missed"
But the brush was new
And I had to swallow too
I was bobbin' up and down like this

I returned home by Rosslare
Where I felt thirsty I declare
I called for a drink
I think it was rum
For it left my pockets bare
I poured it in my glass
And took it in my fist
Then my chin started wobblin'
And I spilt every dropeen
I was bobbin' up and down like this

Chorus:
(5) (Sad verse)
I escorted Mary Jane
'Way out of town by train
I taught my poor heart would break
That I'd ne'er see her again
I lifted up her face
For my poor self to kiss
And sure everything was ready
But I couldn't keep steady
I was bobbin' up and down like this.

Chorus:

Regards

Bert

I know what you mean! I used to sing with a barbershop chorus once. One of our songs was "Row, row your boat.." - complete with paddling actions - which always got out of synch. People used to congratulate us on the wonderful choreography!

Snuffy's version is the one that I know. My Buddy and I sang this at our local community's "Coronation" talent show/music hall. (Gawd that was a long time ago)

Quite unintentionally, we got out of sync with our bobbing up and down (No beer though). We would each try to correct it, both changing at the same time and still keeping out of sync.

We never did get it right, but we brought the house down. Couldn't have planned it better if we had tried.

Martin, you will see in my note's to "Edinburgh Ramble" (Bobbing in bed) that "Bobbing in bed" was an English title for Carolan's "Planxty Connor", but there must have been more than one tune known as "Bobbing in bed", because "Edinburgh Ramble" won't fit Carolan's tune.

I've seen a local land lord perform this song... Standing on a chair in his lounge of the bar, balancing a pint of ale on his head and bobbing up and down to the song. Still keeping the pint full on his head.

He is fairly barking... it's a small pub in Wales.

Makes me laugh everytime I have seen him do it... all his regulars scatter to the far sides of the bar, as usually it gets pretty messy.

Lol

Ella

Snuffy

No - I've seen that one alright. I strongly suspect they're related, alright.

BruceO

"naughty" is a good guesss alright! I've a memory of a bawdy verse at the end, at least. I'll look up your suggestions today.

I know of one local source for this and will chase him up this week.

Not this one then? It appears to be music-hall and relates to a naval arms race in the last half of the 19th century, but is now a campfire-type song

Sons of the sea
Bobbing up and down like this
Sailing the ocean
Bobbing up and down like this
We shall build those ships my boys
Bobbing up and down like this
For they can't beat the boys of the bulldog breed
Bobbing up and down like this

Don't know that one, but 2 with very naughtycal themes are the Irish "Bob and Joan" and "Bobing in bed" (Edinburgh Ramble) in the Scarce Songs 1 file on my website.

I'm looking for the words of this - possibly musichall? I see some mention of recordings of what might be it, on the Web - but nothing more. There appears to be a campfire song of the same title with a nautical theme - that's not the one!
