Archie should eject him from the room if he does not fess up.

Or take his Mudcat credentials away.

Maybe it would be easier to figure out who's the bride. But if she is marrying one of theose relatives or Liam's, we'll never get her right name. And then what would her last name become??

You asked for a hint. Well, here's a start...

A NEW BALLAD CALLED 'JOSEPHINE'S DOWNFALL'

In a neat little town called Dublin where the River Dodder flows
And the Liffey's water strong and green irritates your nose,
A bucko boy was born one day in a palace fine and grand
I'd sing ye a song about that bloke but, sure, he's not the man.

This song's about another - modest, slow and strong,
Ordinary, tall and tough, thirsty and sometimes wrong -
Handsome as starling and prickly as a rose,
Speech just like a barrowman and a voice just like the crows.

WHOA !!! We are going to have TWO stags or one big one. Naemanson and I are still in the guessing game as to the Mudcat Man with the Irish lass.

I did some research after I couldn't make the "hint" song work with the details and I just got a PM from the Mudcat Man I thought was the subject of this thread - not so. His lass is Welsh !!!

Now we have TWO MYSTERY MEN. Since I have #2's permission to start a thread, perhaps we can just use this one and call them #1 & #2.

Naemanson, you are invited to provide hints. I don't know if #2 wants to announce the good news himself or not, so I'll just leave the number of hints I am going to drop at this time to this one.

His mammy wanted a girl, ye see. Mary to be the kid's name
But out came he with a bat and balls! Be Jazus, wasn't that the shame?
The first 3 letters she'd stitched on his frock, she kept them just as they were
And Made 3 new ones at the end just sewing along with a whurrr.

Here's a little more...

A NEW BALLAD CALLED 'JOSEPHINE'S DOWNFALL'

In a neat little town called Dublin where the River Dodder flows
And the Liffey's water strong and green irritates your nose,
A bucko boy was born one day in a palace fine and grand.
I'd sing ye a song about that bloke but, sure, he's not your man.

This song's about another - modest, slow and strong,
Ordinary, tall and tough, thirsty and sometimes wrong -
Handsome as starling and prickly as a rose,
Speech just like a barrowman and a voice just like a crow's.

Marcel was a lovely lad, half-Irish and half French
With sallow skin and shock-red hair each lassie's heart to wrench.
He grew from garsoon to a man and in schooling won the prize
Until one day a maiden fair dawned upon his eyes.

Gosh, that last verse does fit me to a tee, except for the good looking part, to which I cannot agree, at least for modesty's sake *BG*... unless any of the ladies think of Stan Rogers in an amorous way - then I'm in.

Tis not I, unfortunately.

Oggieland... when I attended university, oggie was a state of extreme sleep, usually induced through the use of copious quantitites of medicinal sleeping aids, such as beer.

Naemanson has informed me by PM that archaeologist fits. As for the midnight thing, I'll have to ask Liam's Brother, who started this thread, if questions are to be fielded in addition to hints. Personally, fielding questions doens't seem fair to the group.

BTW, I have never been one to gossip, but I have to admit that I am having fun, albeit perversely, with this.

BBTW, the last line of my last post was another clue. However, it would only be clear to those present in the threads when I first mentioned that I am an early riser.

Last clue before I take my truck to the cleaners.... #2 sings not only with crows, but with cranes as well.

Careful Gnu, you'll have all the Mudwomen swooning for you if you look like Stan Rogers. You'd be better off if you looked like Mel or Sean but Stan, I believe, is what women (at lease Mudwomen) call good looking.

She had beauty, buxom, slim and small, nice ankles and good mirth,
Clear eyes, sharp teeth, short nose, long ears, red cheeks without powder put on.
She could've had any bloke from a sargeant major to a Trinity College don.

Marcel was in love with but she didn't know even his name
Or where he'd come from, where he had been, even if that was the same
Marcel tried every plan he could but, alas, one day cried "Alors!
Perhaps she'll notice me if I go away and get killed in the war!"

So Marcel took the white cockade put it up on his sore head
And left old Dublin's streets and smells and went to France instead.
With Josephine stuck in his brain, he ruthlessly rode 'cross the field
And thrashed Ould Boney's Sons of France and always made 'em yield.

Until one day at Waterloo just before the whole war it was won,
Poor Marcel, Irish with a French name, found the wrong end of a gun.
Who mourns this man with a broken heart and a broken body besides?
Be sure, my man, not Josephine way back on the Liffeyside.

OK, I'm stumped as to the ID of #1.

As for #2, another hint... I suppose he was able to overlook quite a few potential lassies from his crow's nest like perch while singing with the cranes, even though he's a night owl himself.

If you can't guess #2 from that, Naemanson will have to come up with some more clues, because, other than giving out the first five letters of his name, I would be hard pressed to come up with anything else.

Honestly can't figure out #2. Too many cartoon characters, and I can't figure out "the early hours."

I'm fairly sure it isn't "Speedy Gonzalez" because of what Carol C said. Bugs, Elmer, Daffy, Fred, Barney, Bam-Bam (now that's a possibility), Wiley, Sam, (what was that penguin's name), Goofy (I hope not), Mickey, George (of the jungle or Jetson), Grape (as in Ape), Poindexter, Tweety, Sylvester, Rocky, Bullwinkle...

As far as early hours...wee, dawn, AM, morning, sunrise, cock crow (don't even want to go there), breakfast, when the early bird gets the worm...

Naemanson, Bite Me, you bilge-beslimed flea-infested, scurvy hairball of a scrofulous boil on a rat's ass!!!

Yes, GNU spilled the beans. WooDY is the clue. Anyone want to take a shot at it?

The funny thing is that today we had to write a contract for replacing a telephone pole because of damage by, you guessed it, a pileated woodpecker. S/He dug a lovely deep nest in the pole essentially hollowing out the poe and weakening it. The base sent someone out to fill the hole with rocks and we'll replace the pole this week.

Maybe it's an Irish thang... (Unless it's pronounced like "showed," which is basically the same as the French "chaud," which means "hot," and you were confirming my guess...or maybe not.)

So Naemanson, it's a guy named Woody who operates a crane at the Bath Iron Works? Guess I don't know him.

May you both be very happy!

Martin, if you're trying to drive me crazy, you're a few years too late.

I still don't get it. Just call me dense.
You're dense. Who asked you? Well, you said... Oh, shut up, I'm not speaking to you. It's not MY fault - Martin's trying to drive you mad! It'll never happen.)

Jeri, take those puns over to the pun thread!

I CAN'T reveal the name directly. I have been forbidden to do so. He is waiting for someone to guess and write out the name. If I say his name he could do all sorts of nasty things. Once one of you (Carol) guesses correctly he will reveal himself... uh, in a nice way.

Is this real?
Yep, it's reel 12, take 2, ACTION!

Did you know there's a new Firesign Theater compilation out? Not all the old stuff, but a lot...

Now we will learn three words in Turkish: towel, delight, may I see your passport please?

Now it's time to play, Name That Disease!

The compilation is called, "Shoes For Industry; Shoes For the Dead", I think....

Congratulations Martin and Wydat12! We want pictures!
Blessings,
Barbara

Martin!,
Congratu-feckin-lations!
I thought you were married at least 3 or 4 times already with 12 or 14 children to your name.
And sure even if you are - another one won't kill you.

It's a bit of a bummer joining the thread so late and missing all the fun though.

Anyway I'm delighted for you Martin. Will there be a few songs at the ceremony and reception? Will there what.

There's an idea - maybe we should pick a few appropriate songs for the occasion.
How about - ""Sweet Boney, will I e'er seee you more?"
Frank

So, Alison, do we get any hints to carry on our guessing games?

Thanks Folks,

Everybody did a fine job guessing the identity of Man #2. Maggie's gonna kill me for letting the cat out of the bag, but she'll get over it. Now about that pole Naemanson. Where do you think woodpeckers go on their honeymoon? You better give me a hand removing all those rocks. Somethings in life just can't wait!

Comhghairdeas!

I guessed the answer the first time "Liam's brother" published 2 verses of "A NEW BALLAD CALLED 'JOSEPHINE'S DOWNFALL'" but then I knew that Martin Ryan was marrying/ is married to a "Josephine". I still don't know whether Dan Milner has a brother named "Liam".

Are Martin and Josephine not hosting a singaround to celebrate? (I know singers who hosted birthday events on Zoom this year).

Martin and Josephine celebrated on beautiful Clare Island, off the coast of Mayo - where "broadband" is definitely ill-named!

And I want to say how much I appreciate Martin's hospitality on my two visits to Ireland. On my second visit to Ireland in May, 2012, Martin took me birdwatching on Galway Bay, and then we went to a singing session in Kinvarra, and then we had a barbecue with the renowned Josephine. It was delightful. I've often wished that I could go to Spain with Martin to teach English, but that didn't happen. Whatever the case, I can't say how much I appreciate Martin and Josephine and the friendship they have shown to me through the years.
Martin and Josephine, may you survive another 20 years of marriage and song, and then some.
-Joe-
