Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Naemanson Date: 23 Apr 01 - 01:20 PM Gnu, does our friend know Liam's Brother? If so I would say I agree with you about the identity of the Mudcat Man in question. And that means, of course we know the bride-to-be's identity as well. Ain't secrets fun? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: CarolC Date: 23 Apr 01 - 01:28 PM Talk about 'secret inner cliques'. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: gnu Date: 23 Apr 01 - 03:09 PM WHOA !!! We are going to have TWO stags or one big one. Naemanson and I are still in the guessing game as to the Mudcat Man with the Irish lass. I did some research after I couldn't make the "hint" song work with the details and I just got a PM from the Mudcat Man I thought was the subject of this thread - not so. His lass is Welsh !!! Now we have TWO MYSTERY MEN. Since I have #2's permission to start a thread, perhaps we can just use this one and call them #1 & #2. Naemanson, you are invited to provide hints. I don't know if #2 wants to announce the good news himself or not, so I'll just leave the number of hints I am going to drop at this time to this one.
|
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: wysiwyg Date: 23 Apr 01 - 03:32 PM Wait. Don't we need to set up a pool? CarolC-- good catch! Have that one? Mine's gone! ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Naemanson Date: 23 Apr 01 - 05:48 PM Well, let's see.... I wonder where he "dug" her up? She isn't "old" enough to truly pique his interest, is she? Or maybe that isn't a hint but a tease... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Jeri Date: 23 Apr 01 - 06:02 PM If somebody doesn't drop a flippin' hint I can flippin' pick up on pretty soon, somebody's gonna get FLIPPIN' FLAMED!!! |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: CarolC Date: 23 Apr 01 - 06:05 PM "There goes another one, just like the other one..."
"She's no fun, she fell right over..." Nope. They're all gone, more's the pity. Naemanson, your last hint makes this thing sound rather unsavory, if you know what I mean... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Jeri Date: 23 Apr 01 - 07:44 PM Naemanson's hint screams "archaeologist," but I don't know who he's talking about. Can't figure out who Liam's Bro is talking about who sounds like a crow. Does Martin Ryan sound like a crow? He said "Who, me?" up there, presumably about being a guest, but who knows... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Liam's Brother Date: 23 Apr 01 - 07:46 PM Well, let's just continue... A NEW BALLAD CALLED 'JOSEPHINE'S DOWNFALL'

Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Jeri Date: 23 Apr 01 - 07:58 PM I think I got it, and Dan just doesn't want to admit it. I'd like to hear the rest of the song anyway! Let's just pretend I haven't guessed... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: gnu Date: 23 Apr 01 - 07:59 PM So... Mar??? There are a lot of six letter names starting with Mar in the membership list and I don't know over half of them. I don't what #2's voice actually sounds like, but I hear he sings WITH the crows. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: gnu Date: 23 Apr 01 - 08:02 PM That should be... I don't know what #2's.... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: CarolC Date: 23 Apr 01 - 08:05 PM I think I might know who you're talking about, gnu. Does his screen name refer to something that happens at midnight? |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Peter Kasin Date: 23 Apr 01 - 08:21 PM At midnight? Carol, you may sit in the waiting room or wait in the sitting room. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Naemanson Date: 23 Apr 01 - 08:37 PM Definitely talking of two different people and the one I am talking of has been positively ID'd in one of the above posts. And if that isn't enough to go on I have my asbestos undies standing by Jeri! |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: gnu Date: 24 Apr 01 - 06:26 AM Gosh, that last verse does fit me to a tee, except for the good looking part, to which I cannot agree, at least for modesty's sake *BG*... unless any of the ladies think of Stan Rogers in an amorous way - then I'm in. Tis not I, unfortunately. Oggieland... when I attended university, oggie was a state of extreme sleep, usually induced through the use of copious quantitites of medicinal sleeping aids, such as beer. Naemanson has informed me by PM that archaeologist fits. As for the midnight thing, I'll have to ask Liam's Brother, who started this thread, if questions are to be fielded in addition to hints. Personally, fielding questions doens't seem fair to the group. BTW, I have never been one to gossip, but I have to admit that I am having fun, albeit perversely, with this. BBTW, the last line of my last post was another clue. However, it would only be clear to those present in the threads when I first mentioned that I am an early riser. Last clue before I take my truck to the cleaners.... #2 sings not only with crows, but with cranes as well. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Naemanson Date: 24 Apr 01 - 06:42 AM Careful Gnu, you'll have all the Mudwomen swooning for you if you look like Stan Rogers. You'd be better off if you looked like Mel or Sean but Stan, I believe, is what women (at lease Mudwomen) call good looking. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: gnu Date: 24 Apr 01 - 07:33 AM Really ? Well, in that case, I AM in... as soon as lose forty pounds and grow my beard back. At fifty feet, you couldn't pick us apart, unless I sang a tune. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: gnu Date: 24 Apr 01 - 08:05 AM So... I think were down to Marc, Marc W Ryan and marcelloblues. And I don't know any of them. I'd have to go with Ryan because of the Irish name - I don't know the others' last name. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 24 Apr 01 - 08:27 AM (still fretting about the stag party -the only type of fretting around here I understand!). Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: gnu Date: 24 Apr 01 - 12:08 PM OK, I'm stumped as to the ID of #1. As for #2, another hint... I suppose he was able to overlook quite a few potential lassies from his crow's nest like perch while singing with the cranes, even though he's a night owl himself. If you can't guess #2 from that, Naemanson will have to come up with some more clues, because, other than giving out the first five letters of his name, I would be hard pressed to come up with anything else. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: gnu Date: 24 Apr 01 - 12:35 PM Anyone bringing a ball and chain to the stag ? I didn't have one at mine. One of my buddies brought a connibear (sp ?) trap that his father had used on a beaver trapline. I can bring it, but only if someone knows how to work it properly. Otherwise, we may end up at hospital. Then again, after Roger's post, that might happen anyway ! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: CarolC Date: 24 Apr 01 - 01:14 PM Well you've completely given it away now, gnu. So all that's left to figure out is number 1. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: SINSULL Date: 24 Apr 01 - 01:22 PM I am totally confused. Did #1 commit suicide or ask someone to marry him? Jeri - FLAME AWAY!!!! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Naemanson Date: 24 Apr 01 - 01:48 PM #2 is named after a cartoon character and the earliest hours of the day. Is that clear enough or not? |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: CarolC Date: 24 Apr 01 - 02:39 PM Naemanson, a cartoon character? Aw, come on... give the poor bastard more credit than that... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: gnu Date: 24 Apr 01 - 02:52 PM CarolC.. do you know who it is or not ? OR do I misunderstand the rules ? Don't you have to post the name ? Why are you calling him a poor bastard ? OR do I UNDERSTAND, having just delivered more mail, in person, all the way downtown, to my (two tears on May 17) ex, who can't seem to get her address, or phone number changes out to her correspondants. B**** !! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: CarolC Date: 24 Apr 01 - 03:04 PM Yes, I know who #2 is. I didn't think we were supposed to post the name. I only called him a poor bastard because Naemanson equated the first part of his screen name to a cartoon character rather than what it really ought to be. Especially if he's got a new honey. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Naemanson Date: 24 Apr 01 - 03:15 PM I think Carol's mind is in the gutter whereas mine is pristine and clean. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: CarolC Date: 24 Apr 01 - 04:02 PM Well, since I'm already in the gutter, I might as well wallow a bit... Ok, Naemanson, to continue your comparison, if he moves like the cartoon character to whom you allude, his sweetheart ought to be one happy lady. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: gnu Date: 24 Apr 01 - 04:10 PM Who the heck is this cartoon character ? |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: gnu Date: 24 Apr 01 - 04:32 PM Thanks for the PM, CarolC. I get the idea of how the game is played, now. I'm new to Mudcat. Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Jeri Date: 24 Apr 01 - 07:29 PM MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! Honestly can't figure out #2. Too many cartoon characters, and I can't figure out "the early hours." I'm fairly sure it isn't "Speedy Gonzalez" because of what Carol C said. Bugs, Elmer, Daffy, Fred, Barney, Bam-Bam (now that's a possibility), Wiley, Sam, (what was that penguin's name), Goofy (I hope not), Mickey, George (of the jungle or Jetson), Grape (as in Ape), Poindexter, Tweety, Sylvester, Rocky, Bullwinkle... As far as early hours...wee, dawn, AM, morning, sunrise, cock crow (don't even want to go there), breakfast, when the early bird gets the worm... Naemanson, Bite Me, you bilge-beslimed flea-infested, scurvy hairball of a scrofulous boil on a rat's ass!!! |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Jeri Date: 24 Apr 01 - 09:26 PM Well, that tears it. I can think of the cartoon - what it looked like and general theme (thanks to gnu) (I think) - but I can't think of the guy's name. I'm afraid I'll have to give up for the night. Will try again tomorrow, if somebody doesn't kill you first. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Liam's Brother Date: 24 Apr 01 - 11:16 PM Mr. Martin "South Roscommon" Ryan will marry his Josephine (if she'll have him) in Athlone on the 15th of June. Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Apr 01 - 11:38 PM Very nicely done, Dan. I got a good chuckle out of this one. Congratulations, Martin! All the best to you and your bride. So, does this constitute announcing the banns of marriage? You put one addtional verse in the church bulletin each Sunday. When the congregation guesses who the bride and groom are, then they can get married... -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 25 Apr 01 - 04:06 AM Thank you, Joe! I tried to speed up the recognition process with GUEST-(JEST)-GUESSED. And, not to crow over it, but "choughed" seems to have been wasted also! Regards p.s. Yes, she says yes - Liam's brother need have no fear. I know he's on this side of the Atlantic around that time, so he may well turn up looking for confirmation (sorry.. wrong...)

Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Naemanson Date: 25 Apr 01 - 08:29 AM Congratulations Martin! I wish the best for you and your bride to be. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: hesperis Date: 25 Apr 01 - 10:08 AM Okayyyyy..... I know who the catroon character is... but I don't have time to dig through the thread for more than that. Arrgh! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: gnu Date: 25 Apr 01 - 04:22 PM I see in the Coping With Women thread that the key to a good marriage is to shower every day. Woodpeckers don't shower. They take a bath.... BATH. Yup, them WOODPECKERS must have IRON heads for all those WORKS they do way up there in their crows nests with the CRANES in BATH.

Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Naemanson Date: 25 Apr 01 - 05:11 PM Well, maybe I should have said it was one of those selected shorts played at the beginning of a movie. I noticed recently they have gone back to showing the selected shorts again. Only now they call them commercials. Yes, GNU spilled the beans. WooDY is the clue. Anyone want to take a shot at it? The funny thing is that today we had to write a contract for replacing a telephone pole because of damage by, you guessed it, a pileated woodpecker. S/He dug a lovely deep nest in the pole essentially hollowing out the poe and weakening it. The base sent someone out to fill the hole with rocks and we'll replace the pole this week. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Jeri Date: 25 Apr 01 - 05:45 PM I'd like to point out that I figured out it was Martin Ryan a while back...so there. Martin, I still don't get the "choughed" bit - didn't make any sense. I've heard "chuffed," but not "choughed." Maybe it's an Irish thang... (Unless it's pronounced like "showed," which is basically the same as the French "chaud," which means "hot," and you were confirming my guess...or maybe not.) So Naemanson, it's a guy named Woody who operates a crane at the Bath Iron Works? Guess I don't know him. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: hesperis Date: 25 Apr 01 - 06:02 PM Ok... I know who it is. Maybe. Carol, come online so I can confirm it!!! |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Naemanson Date: 25 Apr 01 - 10:20 PM Jeri, take those puns over to the pun thread! I CAN'T reveal the name directly. I have been forbidden to do so. He is waiting for someone to guess and write out the name. If I say his name he could do all sorts of nasty things. Once one of you (Carol) guesses correctly he will reveal himself... uh, in a nice way. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Matt_R Date: 25 Apr 01 - 10:25 PM So did we find out anything here? Or is it still guessing games? |

Now we will learn three words in Turkish: towel, delight, may I see your passport please?
Now it's time to play, Name That Disease!
The compilation is called, "Shoes For Industry; Shoes For the Dead", I think....
Congratulations Martin and Wydat12! We want pictures! |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Frank McGrath Date: 26 Apr 01 - 06:46 AM Martin!, Congratu-feckin-lations! I thought you were married at least 3 or 4 times already with 12 or 14 children to your name. And sure even if you are - another one won't kill you. It's a bit of a bummer joining the thread so late and missing all the fun though. Anyway I'm delighted for you Martin. Will there be a few songs at the ceremony and reception? Will there what. There's an idea - maybe we should pick a few appropriate songs for the occasion. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Naemanson Date: 26 Apr 01 - 08:39 AM Yes! Congratulations to all our players! Prizes awarded all around. The prize is a hug from your resident Naemanson. You can collect any time. So, Alison, do we get any hints to carry on our guessing games? |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: wdyat12 Date: 26 Apr 01 - 09:42 AM Thanks Folks, Everybody did a fine job guessing the identity of Man #2. Maggie's gonna kill me for letting the cat out of the bag, but she'll get over it. Now about that pole Naemanson. Where do you think woodpeckers go on their honeymoon? You better give me a hand removing all those rocks. Somethings in life just can't wait! wdyat12 |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? From: Joe Offer Date: 15 Jun 21 - 02:23 PM And today Martin and Josephine are celebrating 20 years of marriage. Congratulations! -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? (2001) From: Felipa Date: 15 Jun 21 - 03:50 PM Comhghairdeas! I guessed the answer the first time "Liam's brother" published 2 verses of "A NEW BALLAD CALLED 'JOSEPHINE'S DOWNFALL'" but then I knew that Martin Ryan was marrying/ is married to a "Josephine". I still don't know whether Dan Milner has a brother named "Liam". Are Martin and Josephine not hosting a singaround to celebrate? (I know singers who hosted birthday events on Zoom this year). |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? (2001) From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 17 Jun 21 - 04:08 PM Martin and Josephine celebrated on beautiful Clare Island, off the coast of Mayo - where "broadband" is definitely ill-named! Regards |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? (2001) From: Jeri Date: 17 Jun 21 - 09:05 PM A health to you both. Survived 20 years AND that song! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? (2001) From: Joe Offer Date: 17 Jun 21 - 09:16 PM And I want to say how much I appreciate Martin's hospitality on my two visits to Ireland. On my second visit to Ireland in May, 2012, Martin took me birdwatching on Galway Bay, and then we went to a singing session in Kinvarra, and then we had a barbecue with the renowned Josephine. It was delightful. I've often wished that I could go to Spain with Martin to teach English, but that didn't happen. Whatever the case, I can't say how much I appreciate Martin and Josephine and the friendship they have shown to me through the years. Martin and Josephine, may you survive another 20 years of marriage and song, and then some. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Man's Marriage? (2001) From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 18 Jun 21 - 06:08 PM There's still time for a Spanish adventure! Pencil it in for 2022. Thanks for the kind words, from both of us. Regards |
