Good to hear from you, Valerie. If you'd like to continue our conversation, my email is Lawallpottery at aol.com (replace the "at with "@" - I hate spambots)

OK, now I remember! That was a long time ago. Mom and I went to a lot of bluegrass festivals back then. Haven't seen the Crosbys in years since I moved from Jax. Glad you're doing well. Thanks for the details.

Well, since I haven't gotten a response from Gurian Owner, which may not be surprising since she hasn't seen me in almost 30 years, here are a few more details:

If your name is Valerie, I knew you and your mom when you were a teenager. I played music a couple of times a week with the Crosbys, your next-door neighbors on Jefferson Sreet. I had a D-35 Martin and a wife named Cathy. I no longer have either of them. (I have a D-28 Martin and a wife named Susan.)

You bought the Gurian from Doyle after we moved to Pensacola. Eddie Crosby told me about it when we were in Jax on a visit. I tried to come take a look at it, but you weren't home.

I saw Doyle at the Florida Folk Festival in May. He was good on stage, but he was incredible at the workshop the following morning.

Hey, I just came across site and realized I am the "friend" you referred to that has Doyle Dike's guitar with the "Jesus" inlay. I know this is 3 years later, but how do you know this and do I know you?

Saw him at a Taylor clinic at a suburban Chicago Sam Ash store. He is an amazing picker, though I find his evangelism rather off-putting (seeing as how I am of a different faith, I resent being preached to when I have come to be entertained or instructed as to technique). His daughter Haley is a fine mandolinist and has a sweet high voice reminiscent of Alison Kraus-meets-Mindy Smith. He gave me one of his thumbpicks (a Michael Kelly Slick-Pick, which is what I use on 12-string).

I saw him first at The Soundhouse in Charing Cross Road London back in 1999 I think. He was a great player, but did manage to bible bash for about half an hour in the middle of the Taylor demo. My mate Brian Bruce likes him.

LOL!!! BWL--yeah, I do believe da man "believes"--but it ain't like goin' to a revival. He's toned it down a lot, and you'd be happy to see his Sig model isn't loaded with Bible verses, etc. He isn't ashamed to let his faith shine through, but he is NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Pat Robertson, Jerry FALL-into-A-WELL, or whatever.

And really, there ain't nothin' wrong with an occasional ref to the guy "upstairs" as long as he isn't proseletysing or whatever. He does a lot of real secular stuff and isn't rammin' God down yer throats or anything, or I'd not be comfortable going to a workshop or concert. I think he's toned it waaaay down for quite awhile now. He is gifted tho! Hey--I got some wood for that bonfire too!

I am sorry, I just spent half an hour watching the videos of Doyle on that website, and I have to say that I find him woefully inadequate. Why, the guy hasn't even learned how to use a capo! Or how to play a guitar with two strings out of tune. And fingerpicking is all good and fine, but can he do STRUMMING? No, he can't. Neither has he discovered the trick of missing a string as he fingerpicks. He has a long way to go, I'm afraid.

Now, excuse me while I start the bonfire. I have seven guitars to burn...

Doyle lived in my hometown of Jacksonville, Florida during the 1970s and early '80's. He was almost exclusively into Christian music at the time. I gather he still has a pretty strong faith, but he was a bit over the edge back then. In fact, a friend has a Gurian guitar she bought from Doyle in '82 or so which has "Jesus" inlayed on the fingerboard. I mainly knew of him through my in-laws who played and sang in a gospel group and had met him at those all-day sing things gospel folks do. I remember my brother-in-law, who is no slouch of a musician himself, raving about what a great guitarist Doyle was.

I first became aware that he'd developed a national reputation when I saw references to his music in Mark Hanson's book "The Complete Book of Alternate Tunings" and the name rang a bell. I've since heard some of his music and, yes, he's great. I'm glad he's got the workshop/demonstration gig with Taylor because I doubt doing smokey bar gigs for a bunch drunks hollerin' "Play some Buffet, man!" is what a nice Christian guy like Doyle wants to do for a living.

Doyle (and his youngish daughter whom I think plays fiddle) are absolutely INCREDIBLE. He will play the living whatever out of a guitar. And yes---He has his own TAYLOR sig model, which he DOES play in concert (saw him once!), and yes, he is a TAYLOR fan. Apologies to all who think only Gibsons, Martins, and whatever are ONLY WORTHY. Go give a listen to Doyle. He will convert you...oh yeah. The man is a god on acoustic!

Doyle Dykes video

Just wish you could have seen this before you left Rick, but maybe you still can ...

Good as it is , it still shows only a fraction of the man's talent.

Rick, it is kind of difficult to describe him, but if you imagine Leo Kottke, Merle Travis, and Chet Atkins all rolled into one and the best aspects of all thir playing distilled into one pair of hands, then you are starting to get close. His command of artificial harmonics played at blinding speed (and with exquisite taste) is spellbinding.

He travels the world over doing workshops for Taylor guitars (just returned from China) and has a signature model Taylor in production now, which is kind of different to the usual Taylor instrument. Florentine cutaway, induvidual pickups for each string, slimmer body, very much a professional picker's instrument.

Try to catch him at your local Guitar Center, He is bound to come your way sometime. And it is free !!!! (You have to buy a Taylor on the way out, however .....)

Murray

I have just seen a demonstration of virtuosity, versatility and musicality which equals any performance I have ever seen by any guitarist anywhere.

Doyle Dykes did a Taylor workshop tonight in Miami and held an audience of experienced pickers absolutely spellbound.

SO HOW COME NOBODY ELSE ON MUDCAT HAS EVER MENTIONED HIM?

Murray
