Subject: I'm getting dizzy over Izzy all the time
From: GUEST,phyl@grandfolkies.com

We've had a request from an 89-year old that we can't trace. Does anyone know the lyrics that start with "I'm getting dizzy over Izzy all the time. Whose Izzy is he, Is he yours or is he mine?" Many thanks, Phyl R.

Phyl R.--according to the info I could find, this one is old enough to only be on 78 RPM records, and player piano rolls (do a Google search on "whose izzy is he" and several will come up). Apparently performed by Carl Fenton's Orchestra, another version by Pete Wendling. click here

There's a copy in the UCLA Music Collection, listed as "Gennett 5388-A"--it's possible they may have more info if you contact them directly. click here for their site.

Also there is a copy in the Western Historical Manuscript Collection at Columbia University, donated by the estate of Lucile Morris Upton, a Missouri journalist. see this site

Sorry, couldn't find lyrics.

This was a very popular song in the 1930s,but I'm sure it is much older than this. The correct name is--(Is he yours or is he mine)I used to sing this in the 1930s,but I"ve forgotten all but a few lines. There has to be someone who lived in that era who still remembers the lyrics. Here is one source you can try. http://www.vintage78.com/temp_splash/index.htm or you can email them at info@vintage78.com There is another site you can try it is in Canada and it is an Edison record site but I don't have the web page or their email address, but Joe Offer,Sorcha or Kat does for I've seen it posted in the last 3 months.By the way if you do find it please post for I to would like to have the words Good Luck Louie Roy

There is a piano roll available here, but I don't know how much good it would do if you don't have a player piano.........

I'm stuck on the chase for this one. At this site, Vintage Recordings, you can get a cassette tape called "Vocalist's 1920's[sic], Vol. 2" with this song, and 19 others from the same era, for $9.95 + shipping. There are even Real Audio sound bites on a couple of the songs (unfortunately, not the one we're looking for).

phyl@grandfolkies.com and Louie Roy, is the song worth paying for? Up to you.

If somebody else can find words, more power to you and I want to know how you did it!

I think I've done the most I can on this; I'm giving up! (email sent to phyl)

Although it isn't clear from the above discussion, I think we've established that the title of the song is WHOSE IZZY IS HE? (IS HE YOURS OR IS HE MINE?)

Oops...too speedy on the trigger! Sorry.

It's only taken me three years to find the lyrics to this thing. Truth to tell, my SO found a 78--at a junk sale--and remembered us hunting for it all that time ago. So we're now the proud possessors of a record we can only play on one machine in our house...

Here are the lyrics. I'll send email to Phyl. Hope the original requester is still around!

Whose Izzy Is He (Is He Yours or Is He Mine)?
Performer: Carl Fenton's Orchestra
Composer: Brown - Green - Strum
Brunswick label, 1924

Whose Izzy is he, is he yours or is he mine?
I'm getting dizzy, watching Izzy all the time.
He said that he'd be true to me.
I should've got a guarantee!
Whose Izzy is he, is he yours or is he mine?
If you get him, then you'll give me the "Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha."
If I get him then I'll give you the "Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho!"
He who laughs last laughs the best.
You laugh half, I'll laugh the rest.
You may laugh up your sleeve,
But I'll laugh up my vest.

Whose Izzy is he, is he yours or is he mine?
I'm getting dizzy watching Izzy all the time.
He likes lemon with his tea,
I guess the lemon must be me.
Whose Izzy is he, is he yours or is he mine?

I wonder if this was the forerunner for

"Is he an Aussie, Is he Lizzy?
Is he an Aussie, Is he, eh?"

Without the tune, who knows, but it's from about the same period.

Is he an Aussie, is he Lizzy
Is he an Aussie, is he eh?
Is it because he is an Aussie
That he makes you dizzy, Lizzy.
Is it because his ways are jazzy
That he makes you fuzzy=wuzzy?
Got you dizzy, aint he Lizzy?
Is he an Aussie, is he eh?

I have always thought the words were from the First World War.
That was when Australians first burst on the world as a separate identifiable nationality, and I remember my father, a 1914-1918 Australian soldier singing it.

Subject: Lyr Add: WHOSE IZZY IS HE (IS HE YOURS OR IS HE...
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 18 Jan 06 - 07:39 PM

The Indiana University Sheet Music Collection has the sheet music, from which I transcribed this:

WHOSE IZZY IS HE (IS HE YOURS OR IS HE MINE)
Lew Brown, Bud Green, and Murray Sturm. 1924

VERSE 1: I know a guy named Izzy
And he's always busy
Making love to women ev'ry night.
One of them is Sarah.
What a holy terror!
She wouldn't give him up without a fight.
When she saw him flirting with a girl who lives next door,
She got so excited that she started in to roar:

CHORUS 1: Whose Izzy is he? Is he yours or is he mine?
I'm gettin' dizzy, watching Izzy all the time.
He said that he'd be true to me.
I should've got a guarantee!
Whose Izzy is he? Is he yours or is he mine?

PATTER: If you get him, then you'll give me the "Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!"
If I get him, then I'll give you the "Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho!"
He who laughs last, laughs the best.
You laugh half. I'll laugh the rest.
You may laugh up your sleeve,
But I'll laugh up my vest. Hey!

VERSE 2: He went around with Jenny.
She was one of many.
He had lots of girlies on the side:
Becky Rose and Essie,
Sadie Belle and Tessie,
And each one thought she'd be his blushing bride.
Ev'ry time they saw him, they would form a great big ring,
They'd look at each other, and they'd all begin to sing:

CHORUS 2: Whose Izzy is he? Is he yours or is he mine?
I'm gettin' dizzy watching Izzy all the time.
He likes lemon with his tea.
I guess the lemon must be me.
Whose Izzy is he? Is he yours or is he mine?

CHORUS 3: Whose Izzy is he? Is he yours or is he mine?
I'm gettin' dizzy watching Izzy all the time.
I know he kissed you yesterday
'Cause I smelt garlic right away.
Whose Izzy is he? Is he yours or is he mine?

CATCH LINES: Making love is just his line,
But he is working overtime.

He said he'd marry me in spring,
But he is giving you the ring.

Just like a poor fish, I must wait
While someone else takes all the bait.

[The "catch lines" are printed after the end of the music. No explanation is given, but I assume they are meant to be used as lines 3 and 4 of additional choruses.]

Some more words to Flotsam and Jetson's well known song about this Australian - Anyone got any more?...

"Learn how Lizzie met an Aussie
Told her girlfriend Mary Ann
'Oh Mary Ann
I've met a man
who says he's an Australian'
'Fallen for him have you Lizzie?'
Lizzie blushing shook her head
Said Mary Ann
'Don't think you can
Fool me' And then she said...

"Izzy an Ozzy izzy Lizzie etc (as above with the 'azzy jazzy waves... etc)

(Don't know these next 4 lines)
'He being well born
came from Melbourne.
So they sailed at once for there
Now Mary Ann
Without a man
Repeats this maiden's prayer...'

Believe Dick Bently re-recorded it in the 60s

etc...

sorry - botched the line breaks - try again

IS 'E AN AUSSIE, LIZZIE, IS 'E?
Flotsam and Jetsam

Learn how Lizzie met an Aussie
Told her girlfriend, Maryann
"Maryann, I've met a man
Who says he is Australian."
"Fallen for 'im, 'ave you, Lizzie?"
Lizzie blushing, shook her head.
Said Maryann, "Don't think you can
Fool me." and then she said...

CHORUS: "Is 'e an Aussie, Lizzie, is 'e?
Is 'e an Aussie, Lizzie, eh?
Is it because 'e is an Aussie
That 'e keeps you busy, Lizzie?
Has 'e jazzy ways and does 'e
Make you go all fuzzy wuzzy?
Got you dizzy, 'as 'e, Lizzie?
Is 'e an Aussie, Lizzie, eh?"

"Seems this digger likes my figure."
Lizzie then told Maryann.
"Likes my ways and claims to think 'em
What these Aussies call 'Fair Dinkum',
Throws a fond eye, talks of Bondi,
And he's tried to kiss me twice.
When I've said, 'No!' he's said 'Good oh!'"
Said Maryann, "How nice!" CHORUS

Soon this wonder from down under
Got himself right down to biz.,
Lost no time in coaxing Liz
To promise that she would be his.
He being well born, lived in Melbourne
So they sailed at once for there
And Maryann without a man
Repeats this maiden's prayer... CHORUS

Is Izzy ill or is he worse or is he as he was.

Wikipedia says IS 'E AN AUSSIE, LIZZIE, IS 'E was written by B. C. Hilliam & Malcolm McEachern, who performed as a musical comedy duo under the names "Mr. Flotsam and Mr. Jetsam". It was published in 1939.

Subject: Lyr Add: IS IZZY AZZY WOZZ? (Leclerq, Sutton)
From: Rusty Dobro
Date: 27 Sep 07 - 05:12 AM

Now Mr Izzy Rubenstein, who was very old,
One day playing tiddley-winks, he caught a nasty cold.
His great-great-grandson wrapped him up and put him into bed,
His lawyer called next morning, and this is what he said:
'Oh, is Mr Izzy ill? Izzy? Izzy?
Will he make a will? Will he? Will he?
I am Izzy's lawyer and I'm calling round because
I want to know is Izzy ill, or Izzy as he was?'

Now no-one tried to answer him, unto his dismay,
The lawyer's face went very pale as he was heard to say,
'I've been in charge of his affairs since 1862,
He owes me six and eightpence, so tell me quickly, do:
Oh, is Mr Izzy ill? Izzy? Izzy?
Has he caught a chill? Has he? Has he?
The slightest cold often turns to 'flu,
Appendicitis, tonsilitis and bronchitis too.
Is he breathing still? Is he? Is he?
I am Izzy's lawyer and I'm calling round because
I want to know is Izzy ill, or Izzy as he was?'

This is a 'comedy foxtrot' dating back to 1929, written by Arthur Leclerq and recorded by Randolph Sutton. It's still popular in Suffolk pubs, usually sung unaccompanied, and was particularly associated with Ted Chaplin, who was horseman and carriage-driver for Tony Harvey, another excellent pub singer, who died earlier this year. I was fortunate enough to see them at the renowned Low House, in Laxfield, before the infamous Landlord From Hell ousted the Tuesday song sessions from the pub. That gentleman has now gone to where so many people wished him to go, and under new management there are, I believe, regular sessions again. Happy days.

Jim: the 1929 sheet music has it as 'Is Izzy Azzy Wozz?', so I suppose that must be right! I believe Ted's rendition is on a Veteran Tapes recording, possibly ref. OH-1.

Izzy azzy was,
that was what that thread title reminded me of too.
I heard it in a park in Wembley at a childrens show put on by Brent Council in the school holidays in about 1965 (back when my children were young and we were visiting Grandma). And it has stuck in the memory

Help has arrived. My name is Howard Kleidman (dranot@optonline.net),
and I've been singing this song for a lifetime, with the intro as follows:
I know a guy named Izzy

IS IZZY AZZY WOZZ?
Words and music by Arthur Le Clerq, ©1929.
As recorded by Ian Whitcomb.

1. Mr Izzy Rubinstein, he was very old.
One day playing tiddly-winks, he caught a nasty cold.
His great-great-grandson wrapped him up and put him into bed.
His lawyer called next morning, and this is what he said:

CHORUS: "Is Mr Izzy ill? Is he? Is he?
Has he caught a chill? Has he? Has he?
The slightest cold often turns to flu,
Appendicitis, tonsillitis, and colitis, too.
Is he breathing still? Is he? Is he?
Has he made a will? Has he? Has he?
I am Izzy's lawyer and I called around because
I want to know: is Izzy worse or is he as he was?"

2. No-one tried to answer him, much to his dismay.
The lawyer's face went very white as he was heard to say:
"Now, I've had charge of his affairs since 1852.
He owes me six and eightpence, so tell me quickly, do:

CHORUS: "Is Mr Izzy ill? Is he? Is he?
Has he caught a chill? Has he? Has he?
The slightest cold often turns to flu,

Is he breathing still? Is he? Is he?
Will he make a will? Will he? Will he?
