Subject: RE: Help: Breton & Manx sheet music? Know of any From: Lady McMoo Date: 28 Apr 01 - 04:09 AM Dear Deni, There is a very good book of traditional Manx tunes self-published by Mike Patton in London. I have a copy of it somewhere and when I find it I will post the details for you (hopefully later today) and PM you Mike's email address if that's any help to you. Very best regards, mcmoo |

Subject: RE: Help: Breton & Manx sheet music? Know of any From: John P Date: 28 Apr 01 - 07:37 AM There are a lot of books of Breton music available. I don't know about downloadable resources. I work for a company called Dusty Strings and the manager of the retail shop there is a Breton music fan named Ron Reed who usually has several titles in stock, both songs and tunes. If you can't find anything online you could contact him. John Peekstok |
Subject: RE: Help: Breton & Manx sheet music? Know of any From: Hawker Date: 28 Apr 01 - 06:57 PM Deni, If you're up to a spot of aural learning, I have 2 tapes I can let you have next weekend, also have The Manx National Song book - any use? Lucy |
Subject: RE: Help: Breton & Manx sheet music? Know of any From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 28 Apr 01 - 10:06 PM A search for breton at J C's Tunefinder will get you a lot of references (though it will of course include "Cape Breton" too) -plenty to be going on with, anyway: available as staff, midi and abc. Of course, it's best to listen to the music before trying to play it; "sheet music" can only ever be an aide-memoire, and will give you no real idea of the kind of style you need. Malcolm |
Subject: RE: Help: Breton & Manx sheet music? Know of any From: Lena Date: 29 Apr 01 - 10:01 AM Don't know about downloadable resources, but the "Breton tune and dance book"by Dave Shepherd,(Dragonfly Music,10 Gibson street,Newbiggin by the Sea,Northumberland NE64 6PE),is a passable book to start with.I find the dance section more appealing than the sheet music, but some of the most popular breton tunes are there.
there is also the Breizh ar Braziz (hope the spelling is correct),the book in which apparently a good portion of the Breton music heritage was gathered(the breton version of the Child's Ballads),and I'm sure you can order it via internet, although definitely not a single page of it was published on internet(I enquiried around a while ago.) |
Subject: RE: Help: Breton & Manx sheet music? Know of any From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 29 Apr 01 - 10:58 AM I think I have that book Lena if I can find it you can have it Deni. I have never really used it. There are a couple of other books at the Music Room, Massif Central.Vol 1 &2 - Tunes From Central France, and Dansons La Morvandelle. If you contacted the shop they might be able to give you more details to see if they are of any use to you Roger |
Subject: RE: Help: Breton & Manx sheet music? Know of any From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 29 Apr 01 - 11:45 AM The second book Lena mentioned is Barzaz Breiz -Chants Populaires de la Bretagne by the Viconte Hersart de la Villemarque ("Kervarker"); it was first published (I think) in 1839, but seems to have been reprinted a number of times over the years, and can be found at affordable prices via book dealers in France and Canada. You can get a reprint of A. W. Moore's Manx Ballads and Music from Llanerch Publishers, but unfortunately they're closing up shop soon, so don't delay. If you search for the phrase breton NOT cape through the "Digitrad and Forum Search", by the way, you can avoid most of the Cape Breton references and get a more manageable list of things to look at.
