The story is told of a poor man, Shmelke, who lived in a small village. The town folks wanted to support him, but without him feeling like he was accepting charity. So they came up with a plan: They hired him to sit at the city gates and wait for the Mashiach.(Messiah)
"Not really," said Shmelke, "but it's steady work."
When we say "Next year in Jerusalem" we mean that all Jews should actually be in Israel and in Jerusalem (not just as tourists!). We mean Jerusalem as it is ideally meant to be - with the Temple, the Sanhedrin and a Jewish Monarch. We're still waiting. Even we here in Jerusalem say "Next year in Jerusalem!" |
Subject: RE: BS: A question for Irwin or other Israelis From: Owlkat Date: 30 Apr 01 - 12:51 PM Hi, Another part of the reason that this is so important to us is that during the centuries that Jews were unable to live in Israel/Palestine/Judea, it was a prayer of hope, that no matter how bad things (persecution, death, etc) were in the "Diaspora"(Exile), the next year would be better because, maybe, we would be able to return back home to our land of origin. Israel is now a reality, but the prayer is still said at Passover seders. Owl. |

The statement is just good ol' eschatological (end time) yearning. Uncloudy day and all that ship comes in metaphorical talk.... If I never never see you any more...Bye an Bye I'm goin to see the King. Take your pick, but they all center around pining for the time without tears and judgement. |
