I did some checks yesterday:

- There is a decent instrument shop in Muenster.

- There are no good CD shops (for folk) any more. The best I found has the usual collection of 'Best of Irish Folk' and I had to spell 'Watersons' when asking.

- There is a 'Celtic Corner - The Best of Ireland and the British Isles' (Kevin McGrath would be proud of that formulation and geographers would say that two words are superfluous), a kind of souvenir shop. You wouldn't want to buy British souvenirs in Germany, would you?

- Probably no live folkmusic in Muenster at the weekend (except by us), sorry. One weekend earlier and you could have listened to 'Einstuerzende Heuschober' (collapsing haybarns) playing traditional German dance music, well worth seeing and hearing. One weekend later and you could have heard 'One 4 the road' a German-Irish band with the implicit aim to demonstrate that they can make each Irish song sound like 'The Wild Rover'.

- A room in a pub was more difficult, for they don't like to give away rooms on Saturdays (the days with the best business). For that reason, 'Scott's corner' (draught cider, draught McEwan's, draught Newcastle Brown Ale, 100 malt whiskies, barfood, haggis, ...) said 'no thanks' as did some restaurants with local food. So I settled for a fairly new bistro (not many customers yet) with Mediterranean cuisine, that is pizza and pasta. It was alright last night. They even wanted to give us a stage but I said no thanks. Not that I doubt that several of you can make a great performance on stage, but I think the idea of a gathering is slightly different. We can eat there together on Saturday evening and then have a room off the main room with can sit about 20 people.

- They also do have breakfast (buffet) on Sunday morning which solves one of my problems, for I could not sit more than 6 to 8 persons.

Wolfgang

That sounds great, Wolfgang- thanks for doing the work. I'd like to try some German food while we're there (I've never been to Germany before)- no doubt we will on our travels anyway. What do you have for breakfast?

Bread and rolls with many different things on it like cheese, ham, honey, jam.

Sometimes cereals, but never anything cooked except the eggs.

I'll look for a typical German restaurant for sunday noon, before you'll have to go.

What we get in Muenster:
Lebanese, chinese, japanese, italian, spanish, portugese, russian, argentinian, greek, turkish, italian, african, mexican, scottish, latino-american, indian, french, and several I can't remember right now.

Probably not, Eric! :-)
Anyway, I don't suppose I'm typical in my breakfast habits but more often than not I have nothing. The only thing I can face at eight am is tomato juice. (Strangely enough, I never have any trouble getting outside of my cooked English breakfast at nine am whenever I am in Britain!)
Wolfgang, this sounds great! I've just finished a second tape for you, btw. Let's see if you like them.

I'm not going, more's the pity, but about 11 years ago I went to Muenster with Ebor Morris from York (which is twinned with the city) for the big international dance festival being held in the Muensterlandhalle. I got into a cracking session outside on the forecourt area one warm night with a couple of Swedes, a German, an American, and several others who I don't know where they came from. I will admit to it being in my bodhran days, but at least it meant I knew the tunes! The Swedes had to be dragged out of the session to go home on their bus or they'd miss the ferry!

Anyway, more to the point, it seems from what I remember, that not so far from the 'halle there is a pub that brews its own. (You could always trust Ebor to nose out something like that)! I didn't get to go in because I was childminding most of the time. All I know is that it was near enough for them to visit and not miss what they were supposed to be doing at the event.

The bistro is at walking distance from my place. The landlady, speaking near perfect German (she says she even speaks better Italian, Spanish, French and Arab) is an American from Minnesota and says she loves folk music.

The places with the good bear are crowded on Saturdays. We could have gone to a good place for eating with its own beer but they wouldn't let us make music. As a kind of compromise I have bought two crates of good German beer (Jever and Pott's Landbier) for the time they throw us out and we'll have to return to my place. There'll be red wine from either Chile or Spain and there'll be white wine from either Chile or New Zealand. There'll be about ten different malts from Scotland (including one I bet even Susanne has not yet tasted) and, just in case, mineral water and juices. So used whatever they serve as drink in the bistro to keep you from getting too thirsty and save a bit of the thirst for later. I didn't ask when we'll have to leave but I guess it'll be at about midnight.

Mcmoo, I'mm curious. where are you staying?

Wolfgang

The Green Pastures (N.C. PA USA) MudGathering just ended, and I wanted to say to everyone planning the Germany one-- hey everyone, have a GREAT TIME.

What I learned from just having done this is that the more advance prep you do just in case, the more you get to relax and not worry at ALL as things unfold. None of my prep was wasted, even though I felt quite over-prepared.... like smart packing, I actually used everything I had gotten or rearranged or planned for, and needed every contingency plan I'd made, in some small way, that allowed it all to unfold effortlessly and with no RUNNING things once arrivals began.

I also learned that putting all the info in the thread like I did, and like you seem to be doing, was GREAT. Everyone knew everything they needed to know to help keep everything flowing really well and seamlessly. Best cooperation between people who didn't even know one another that I have ever seen. I think we could have sailed a tallship if we'd wanted to.

We also found it very important to have a space where people could drop out of the things going on as they needed to. People who needed to rest, or just chill out, wandered off unhindered and unpursued, and this kept all the energy very positive throughout. A few seemed to make a bit of a retreat out of the weekend. Some people found themselves talking about deep things that had been preoccupying them, and there were many good listeners in our bunch.

Anyway I wish you the best with your MudGather! Maybe someday all the people who've ever hosted one can get together and talk about how intense it is to be at one you have organized! Wow!!!!

~Susan

One day maybe a world gathering!! That would be something, but where on earth that could be reached and afforded by the majority I wouldn't like to guess.

Me, I'll settle for Llangstock, Swintstock and Muenstock for starters.

Only 4 days to go!!!!!!!!!

As for breakfast Susanne, for me Coffee, coffee and posibly a 3rd cup, oh and of course my beloved pipe. Food comes way down on the agenda, but a German breakfast sound like a Dutch breakfast, which is alright with me, all the different rolls and spreads is just fine for me after coffee and a pipe.No sprinkles?

Oh well-almost bedtime, just a bit more school work to do tonight.

See you all soon.

Eric

(BTW, have you seen that England has finally beaten Germany in a penalty shootout in football yesterday at an international championship? Well, it was the U16 championship, but it's a start)

There is some bad news from me.

Wednesday evening last week I lost a filling from a tooth, which was replaced Thursday morning.

All through the weekend, I thought the tooth is ok, till Monday morning, 2 AM when I awoke with very severe pain.

Monday I was at the dentist again who took out the new filling and also some pus . She left the hole open so the wound could heal before the new filling is coming in.

Tomorrow morning I have the next date with her - she will decide whether it is time to put in a new filling or whether it has to wait.

As long as my tooth does not work all right again, I won't go - hopefully it will be okay after tomorrow's visit at the dentist, there is no pain since she took out the filling so it looks good.

I will let you know tomorrow about the newest developments in my mouth. This is not yet a cancelling - I just want you to be prepared in case I really have to cancel (which I do not hope).

Mudguard, you can't let a tooth stop you please. You can have permission to drink wolfgang's whiskey for pain relief (That's kind of me!) But it would be a shame not to meet you. There are very few things that hurt like tooth ache, so get well soon.

Only 21/2 days to go.

The "Pride of Rotterdam" made her maiden ferry crossing today, complete with 2,000,000 !!! Smuggled cigarettes which were found at Hull in a lorry-what a start, 2,000,000 fags Tuesday and us lot returning on Sunday night/Monday morning!! The boat leaves later, as it's a faster crossing, does that mean we'll have a later check in time Bill? Stay longer in Germany? I know it will only be a few hours longer, but the Pride doesn't leave hull until 21.00hrs instead of 18.00 normally. I expect it will be the same from Europort.

I wish Wednesday and Thursday would fly by, then it will be Friday at last. it's a bit like a kid wishing for Christmas or a birthday, much like me wishing for the end of term!!!

Cheers.

Eric

Andy, not wanting to put pressure on you in your plight, yet I have to support Bron - I've had a tooth left open for weeks before the inflammation had cleared entirely and a filling could be put in. It didn't stop me from getting about (not for weekends - I certainly wouldn't risk going on holiday with an open tooth!). The only thing is to keep the hole clear of foodstuffs (for which I carried a small pointed pair of pincers - I think ...) and get a chance to brush your teeth regularly.
Gute Besserung, und ich druecke Dir die Daumen, dass Du kommen kannst!

Thanks for all your support!!!

Only three days till we meet!

Yes, we will meet, as the news from the tooth is:

The dentist cleared all living material from the tooth. And she told me she has to leave it open for at least 8 to 10 days before she can even think about closing it. She told me 4 weeks are no problem if I am not in pain again.

So I will be there for the MudGathering!!! It might just be that I have to cut short my cycling tour which I am going to start from Münster through Netherlands and Belgium towards France (Normandie/Bretagne) and Channel Islands.

Hi Mudguard,
I'll have an open tooth closed this afternoon. Seems to be the season for open teeth *gr* Yeah, it's spring and even holes are growing.

Wolfgang,
I not only gave another(1) thought on taking the train but at least 100 another thoughts. I tried as well to convince some friends to come with me(or me with them, depends on how you regard it)but they all are either uninterested or occupied with other stuff. Don't be angry about me but I can't stand the train, perhaps because I'm not allowed to drive at the moment. On the other hand it's three times more expensive than the car.

So the sad result: I'll be with you in my thoughts and I envy all of you.

I'm shure this won't be the last meeting, maybe when you're all together at Muenster you can fix the date for next year.

All my best wishes to all of you, have fun and music and maybe raise some glasses "for absent friends".

menzze

Yes, I am touring! Yes, I am touring! Yes, I am touring!

Hope that answers your three questions ;-)

I do about 500km per week and I usually tour for 4 to 6 weeks at a time. But I don't get slowed down by numbered or named children, as I usually tour alone.

Last year I toured Wales - that's where I met Bron (Llanfair) and also Jon Freeman and Sian (West-Wales).

Nice to know I am not the only tourer at the meeting!

See you all very soon now - less than 70 hours from now.

Btw, my tooth is very quiet right now, I hope it will stay like this for the next five weeks...

Ah, the Welsh narrow gauge steam railways, what a fond memory. I've travelled them all with the exception of Snowdon mountain railway (too much fun to walk that bit up and down).

I'm getting second thoughts about the completeness of my preparation after reading Bill talking (I mean listening him writing) a funny language in the Geordie jokes thread. Do we need an interpreter?

It is still a very hot day over here, today, 25+ degrees centigrade, but there'll be rain tomorrow!

song lyrics.
- (very tentatively): 9am, Sunday: walk to have breakfast in a bistro (same, if we liked it there, other if we didn't)
- noon: who's still there can join me for German food in a restaurant

And Noreen- I never take issue with what you say, but Fresh Humber air? ICI, several petro chemical works, and cobbles feet!!! Oh well, takes all sorts I guess.

22.00hrs now, and less than 24 hours till we go.

Next time we chat, it will be for real.

Goodnight all.

By the way- If Cobble asks any of you ladies or gents to go and see the "golden rivet" -WATCH OUT!!!!!!!!

cheers.

Eric

I've just had another look at the "Pride of Rotterdam" info. There is an Irish bar, cabaret(!), and, "for the youngsters", a cyber room where people can surf the net.
So, all you landlubbers, watch this space!!!, though we will probably have to browbeat some pimply youths to let us near a computer!!!
I am so excited, and not a bit sleepy!!!!
See you tomorrow! Cheers, Bron.

I was just trying to get in the mood, Eric.... :0) So, two reasons to avoid Cobble, his feet and the "golden rivet" - the mind boggles.

Only one more sleep... (as the reception class would say)! I would have baked some cookies to bring, Wolfgang, to go with the beer.... but am prohibited. Sorry!

Noreen

I'm kicking corporate ass in Leeds 'til 4, then burning down to pick Eric up. Hope there's no rozzers on the M62.

Shoite, the boot of my Alfa looks tiny, with an enormous accordion taking up the bigger part. Buggered if I know where I'm putting Bill's 2m fags (cigarettes, yankees!).

This is Internet realtime! I'll be starting in an hour or two, but first I'll slip into my bath to avoid smelly feet. (Can't do anything about the garlic, though ...) See you all soon! And to those unavoidably left behind: Enjoy yourselves while you've got the chance to do what you like!

Hi,

Envy greetings to the meeting from Leutkirch im Allgäu. Shit, how I'd love to be there.Hope everybody arrived healthy and with good condition for the night.

Where is the hourly report on what's happening I expected to find here*bg*?

I have to play a little gig in a pub run by friend of mine just beside the Lake of Constance(Bodensee). I'm gonna think of you all when playing tonight.

Have a good time and enjoy yourself and your music.

Slainte

There are 7 of us here on this SERIOUSLY posh boat. We have had a fabulous time, and we are tired out.
A million thanks to Wolfgang for his hospitality, and to Mrs Wolfgang.
I have got logged on whilst the others are having a sandwich.
Cheers, Bron.
