I know we had a thread on electric keyboards a while back.. this is different in that I am not looking for a basic model.

I am wanting to buy an electronic keyboard with a built in MIDI file player. My poor old Yamaha is on it's last legs........

Casio has one (CT 731)on the lower end of the price scale @ $850 Aus, the next up is a Roland EM-50 @ $1300 Aus.

I have not been happy with the sound of Casio's before, have they improved? and am I just being a snob for not liking the name? eg is it worth the extra $400 to get the Roland name?

Has anyone else tried any of these? or can recommend anything good at the lower end of the price scale?

I have a Yamaha Keyboard (PSR 540)complete with a floppy disc drive and of course midi connections for the computer.

I am resident in the UK so I don't know what price a keyboard of this make and style would cost in dollars. But in £sterling I paid £480.

just over $1000 the way the dollar is now.....

do you like it? I have been playing a Yamaha PSR 375 (I think).. for years....

does the piano sound, sound like a real piano???? can you adjust MIDI files (discs) while it is playing?

You've given me something to try out now?

But you can certainly play about with the tune if you have a suitable software programme on the computer. Changing the voice, tempo, and beat, etc. Adding other instruments and things like that.

The Yamaha PSR540, really does have a true sound. The default voice is a Grand Piano and that, like every other voice on the instrument is remarkably close to the real thing.

I have a Yamaha keyboard one of the PSR series about 300 UK pounds and a Roland 6000s about 2000 UK pounds. The Roland is a beast in size and weight compared with the Yamaha but is in a different class as far as sound and playing feel goes. It's one of the few that can really sound and feel like a piano.
Good luck with your hunting it's half the fun isn't it.
I have been searching for another yjread in whicch I think you said you had used a headset mic with some success. What make was the mic? We are looking to experiment with something like this. My wife tends to move around a bit when singing or playing the recorder.

Sennhauser.... but it picks up a lot of breath noise, because it needs to be turned up loud.... I use it more for getting onto the floor to demonstrate.....

Re The Keyboard As regards to whether you can adjust sounds whilst playing the disc?

Apparently on my Yamaha PSR 540, you can edit the music with the "punch in" & "punch out" device. You can also do multitrack recording. So it seems pretty versatile.

I am intrigued to know what you do Alison? are you a singer or dancer and what do you demonstrate?

I just read that myself and thought it sounded pretty ambiguous....

I am a multi-instrumentalist and singer....... and I have been known to dance too..... some of my gigs are bush dances which involve teaching dance steps to people.... and sometimes it is easier to get on the floor and demonstrate.....

I have a nice little Yamaha PSS480 which I use for all my midi work. It will send and receive channel filters and also send bulk dumps (but I've forgotten what those are again). I can turn the volume off on my software (Cakewalk 9.03)and hear only the Yahama sounds or I cna turn off the volume on the Yamaha and change the instrument and volume on the Software. Suits me. I also have a full sized Roland with both audio and midi output. It sounds wonderful! but I usually end up using the little Yahama because it's so handy and doesn't take up a lot of room...

Was it your Roland that I used for the Springrise! album? I'd take that ANYDAY!!! Even though it doesn't have very many voices, they're all nice ones...

Yamahas can be nice, too.
