Subject: What's your good news?
From: Kim C
Date: 04 May 01 - 10:50 AM

All right, y'all, I think it's time for another good news thread.

The Big Gig is this weekend, teacher says I'm in great fiddling shape, Mister knows all the words to his songs, and we actually sound like we know what we're doing!

Calcium supplement appears to be helping the evil PMS affliction.

Taking a great vacation next month to Williamsburg, VA. Anybody know any good pubs/restaurants/whatever there?

I can do 30 real pushups. Two months ago, I couldn't even do ONE. I have been doing Tae Bo since Christmas, and I've even noticed that it's improved my singing.

My health is good, my husband is a great guy, my car runs, my job is steady, I have more friends than I can begin to count. Life is good.

Anyone else?

Wow, how can I top that?? I think it's great that things are good for you Kim. I'm feeling kinda lucky myself. I have a great wife, my kids are getting to the age that I can have real meaningful conversations and discussions with them, I'm playing regularly at places that apreciate me, I enjoy my real job, and I've lost 11 pounds. Other than that, life sucks.....kidding!!!

Fridays After Five has begun! This is the weekly outdoor concert in Charlottesville, VA, goes from now through early October. Lots of beards, lots of tie-dye, lots of alternative sexual styles, a real contrast from the corporate America Cville usually is to us suits!

Dave, Tae Bo is a sort of kickboxing workout by a martial arts champ named Billy Blanks. The first time I did it, I thought I was going to die! It's very challenging and moves very fast, but that way I feel like I've accomplished something when I'm done. There's a whole series of videos you can buy! ;-)

Well....

This rotten semester is finally windind down...two final crits next Thursday and the semester is over.

Summer is coming, and I'm hopefully getting a job as a copy editor with the school newspaper.

I'm getting a web cam next week.

I've got the new Stereophonics album.

My friend Ryan is moving back to the Newman Center this summer, so he and I are planning a whole summer of writing songs together, mostly parodies. We're going to be working on "Ryan's Cheesey Christian Rock Album" as well. Maybe do some music together with Pepe for Mass. We're also in the beginning stages of planning a haunted house at the Newman Center at Halloween. Not a "boo!" kind of thing, but an unsettling psychologically chilling haunted house.

Most of all, I am in love and happier than I've ever been in my entire life.

I just finished all my classes, handed in the last of my essays, and have completed course work for another academic year... only one left for this degree! I still exams, but those are weeks away. The weather is beautiful, the Beltaine Fayre is tomorrow, my boyfriend is wonderful, and I've just eaten strawberry mousse and a warm almond crossaint.

Oh, and my 15 average is entirely secure, and looks to be going up! (Marks. It's pretty good.)

I'm happy :)

Hmmm...

Life is indeed good.

My partner is a fun-loving, wise, affectionate, gentle and exciting man who matches me in every way. A true soulmate.

I have a beautiful and talented (multi-talented) daughter whose life is also good.

The sun is shining!

I have a new bicycle (peugot mountain-bike 21-speed) bright red witha matching helmet!

My partner has just written two more songs, and I have written one more.

The allergies are not as bad this year as in previous years.

I'm already getting a nice golden tan from being able to go outside more this spring.

Aye! Life is good.

gosh Kim, I could use this right now.

(After being laid off at Christmas, losing a dear friend on Burns Night, and getting evicted this month...)

Okay! There must be something!

I have been walking 3-4 miles per day and feeling great!

The extra-warm weather in Boston this week has brought out all the apple blossoms!

Just finished grdaes for my classes this semester and start teaching a summer course May 21 through June 27. I then, technically, have the summer off.

I visited my parents last week and though their health is bad they are following up on their plans to move into a house easier for my Mom to navigate (she has MS); this has been a long time coming and I think all will be well.

My apartment hunting is progressing...I might actually find something suitable before I get kicked out! (how's that for optimism!)

Despite all I am happy and healthy. I have great friends who are very supportive. There is lots of great traditional music in this town. I have met some wonderful people through the singers' club I attend, and we were featured in the Boston Globe two Sundays ago! (yes, my picture was in the paper).

I get to see free movies because of my work (how cool is that?)

All in all, I am very lucky!!!!

(I feel better now)

Peg

We are celebrating our 28th wedding anniversary tomorrow. Likewise son #3's 20th birthday. Spring had definitely sprung. And I have friends I can share all this with.

What could be better?

That thar Tae Bo sounds a bit energetic for a old fat Gnome though. I think I'll start with dominoes and work up to it gently;-)

I forgot to mention, as I was leaving for work this morning, I took a moment to look at the splendid dark red roses blooming next to my door, and around the yard. I can't take credit for them because the landlady does the yard work - but they sure are pretty.

And the daisies have begun to spring up, too.

Sounds great, everyone. Keep going!

Well it's 16.35 here, off home in 25 minutes. No work on Monday (Bank Holiday). Seems likely to be fine enough to carry on battling with the garden, going to spend Sunday in Brum checking up on Dad who has just got over a health scare, Herself will be driving so I can let him force a drink on me (AFTER I've taken a chain saw to a sick tree he's got). Seems pretty good to me!

The sun is shining, I've just spent 3 hours having a pub lunch in a beer garden, and I had a wonderful night out the other night with an old friend who was a perfect gentlemen (and I didn't know there were many of them around). Also, I'm off to Utah for a conference at the end of the month, and I get to go via Boston to see my wee sister, who I haven't seen for nearly a year. I'm happy.

Ben Franklin once said, "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." And I wholeheartedly agree.

Fib, Billy Blanks sells a standing contact bag, for those who want something to punch/kick. He also has one of those big padded things that you can sucker someone into holding for you so you can beat on them without them getting hurt. ;-)

It's our monthly Pot Luck day here at the office, so in about an hour I'll be getting some yummy things to eat!!!! (No beer, though.)

I am FINISHED with the semester!!I took my final exam today. I fell going into the classroom and sprained my ankle, but like the good nurses and friends they are, my classmates got a trashcan to prop my foot on, fetched an ice pack, and provided strong medication, and I sat and took that 4 1/2 hour exam. Made a "B". The good news of all this is that, for one last time I got to sit among some wonderful friends I've made, and it helped me to see what I'M made of. I just got a call from a piano tuner who hung up on me this morning- he apologized! Considering I had done nothing wrong- he was angry at another tuner- the incident had left a bad taste in my mouth. Now all is well. I wonder why we, as human beings, resist apologizing? The outcome of an apology is almost uniformly positive.

My other good news is that I had a small medical procedure done last week and this week I got the news that everything tests out fine- all benign, and all taken care of.

Is it the stars, or is it in ourselves? :)

Gosh, where do I start?

Well, as I posted earlier, I gave 30-days notice on Tuesday. Hurrah! Courage finally won out! :D

On top of that, one of my last major projects is to pull together the new songbook for this summer's B'nai B'rith Camp. So now I have an actual work-sanctioned excuse to surf the Mudcat! Yay!

Kate Rusby has a new album out and she's going to be playing Seattle in July! I'm in heaven!

And for extra bonus cookies, the cute redheaded cashier at Zupan's has flirted madly with me the last several times I've been in (last time he even said, "Make sure to tell me if you're going to be performing around town!")

All in all, not too shabby. *grin*

M

Well, I already announced my good news, but it keeps getting better. There's this beautiful chiropractor named Christina who lives in the mountains and takes me on wildflower hikes, and we're getting married early next year. That's all the good news I need for now....

Kim,

Thank you for this thread. I really appreciate a positive voice on Mudcat. You and Dave have made me feel at home with all that is going on in my life recently. "Power to the Positive" I say. Never look back, always look to the future with hope. I was "down so long it looked like up to me," but not anymore. Thank you Kim and Dave.

Well after many years of solo playing, I took the plunge and have put a band together (this month). The other four musicians are superb, we've rehearsed four times (not something I'm disciplined to do, normally) and looks like we'll have a regular Monday evening at a wonderful new folk club in town right after the radio show.

Fer me dat's good news.

Rick

Let's see...our 31'st anniversary is on the 14th of May, our son's furture mother=in-law is coming all the way from California to be with us, as she was last year. Instead of having anything itzy, we (with smiling permission), take over the neighborhood pub for the night, and all our musician friends and musical family members sing to us....HEAVEN.
Ooops! The instrumentalists are not to be forgotten here. They play their hearts out.

I just spent the funniest two hours sitting in a proctologist's office with Pat Cooper ( the comedian), a very confused elderly lady who thought she had an appointment but was late for her flight to Texas, a male nurse who confused doped up with knocked up, and a stand up comedian for a doctor. On the way home, I started laughing out loud on the subway and got a row of seats all to myself. I will compose the details when I come down to earth.

My long-awaited and nagged-for new kitchen was delivered this week, and after 7 days of climbing over boxes of units and doors, lengths of worktop and a cooker, and not being able to get at the freezer in the garage, it will be fitted, starting Tuesday! I will not mind not being able to cook, wash up, do the laundry... I have a camping stove and a combi-oven, and the pub across the road does great meals.

I have craft fairs on Sunday and Monday, plus an evening stall on Tuesday, all of which will get me out and about, (after the last few weeks being stuck in the area and starting to sort out my mum's affairs), and mean some hard, late night catch-up work if the earlier ones do well. I will moan and groan and get no sleep, but I will be ENJOYING myself!! (No sleep, because the combi oven only runs for 90 mins at a time, and doughcraft takes hours to bake. It then has to be painted and sealed).

My friend in Wiltshire has sent me a root of a plant which a guy she knows has spent 7 years developing. It is the only specimen outside Wiltshire, as far as I know (gloat mode engaged). Yes, it's a "legal" plant!

I am going out for lunch with my brother in law. And I think he's paying!

I'm off with our dance side to Belgium at the end of the month.

Andrea

Well, after undergoing a newish proceedure a couple of weeks ago, my heart is now as good as any other 52 year old.

I'm walking 3kms per day instead of 300m and (all being well) should be signed off as fit today by the doctor and be able to return to work tonight (been off for about 6 months).

Thats "GOOD NEWS" to me!

Phew! OK, I've been predicted A* for my GCSE music exam, which I'm taking two years too early. My piano was tuned yesterday and the R-2 key on my flute's finally been fixed. It's not raining (depite it's the north of England) and I've got some very interesting blue gauze to put on my bedroom ceiling. I've also been accepted to tour France with the Bede Wind Philharmonic in late July, even though I left my application seven months too late. Yay!

Great great great!!!!!!

Our weekend was very successful. Those guys I were so afraid to play in front of, were very complimentary to us. A couple of other players - a guitarist and another fiddler - invited us to come play with them, which we did, and it was great fun. So there was never any reason to be so uptight. Which my brain knew all along... but y'all know how that works.

On to the next project!!!!!!!

The house is paid off. And it hasn't fallen down yet.

Kris is taking early retirement. This only means she's looking for new work, but it'll be part time. When you're a teacher that means you teach half the day and do your prep work the other half - full time means you teach all day and do prep work half the night. So you don't get much sleep, or time for leisure activities, except on weekends or vacations. So we can work on music a little more effectively.

I own the finest guitar I have yet - bought Jack Lawrence's Collings that he played on stage with Doc Watson from '93 until a year or so ago. Now I have to learn to play it properly. Damn.

I am owned by the two most obnoxious black-and-white kittens that ever jumped onto the middle of a file that was spread out on a desk. I posted the link to the pictures a while back.

Both kids are coming home this summer - Ian will be at Old Songs with us. Poor devil.

Peter.

Good luck BP. It will go brilliantly and you will get the job - provided you realy want it of course! Keep positive - you've seen the power already:-)

Our weekend went very well. Gets even better now. For the first time since 1975 when our eldest was born we have the house completely to ourselves for nearly 3 days! Son #3 is back at uni. till Thursday night. Daughters are off to Northumbria on a school trip till Friday. Wayhay! What can we do??? Forgot what it's like to not have to watch MTV, Japanese cartoons and Buffy the vampire slayer 24 hours a day!!!!

Any suggestions? Keep it cleen(ish) please;-)

I've just started taking medication for my MS in the past few weeks. The first two injections made me pretty ill with side effects. I did my third injection last night & the side effects are at a minimum today. Seeing as I'll be doing this once a week for the rest of my life,I'm pretty happy that the adverse effects are diminishing.

I didn't have to dig all the shit out of the run in sheds, my nephews did it for me on the weekend.

The dead deer off the edge of the driveway doesn't stink any more, its been reduced to a pile of hide and bones by turkey vultures and various insects.

I live in an area where dogs are more highly prized than business. I paid more for my annual dog license yesterday than my business license.

BCAA only took 15 minutes to rescue me yesterday at the local municipal hall, when for the 2nd time in less than a month month, I locked my keys in the car.
