It's show time! The video is up.

https://www.discogs.com/release/23842217

My thoughts...this song cycle is quite wonderful both for being well-selected to inspire kids and for being superbly arranged and performed. Lynn is simply amazing. "Let It Be" is a very rarely covered song and here we have one that is nothing short of a revelation of how great it is. I'll go so far as to say that it must be considered the definitive version. And yet, the gem here is "Calico Cat" -- it's simply a masterpiece.

Enjoy.

that's an excellent idea, thanks again for what you are doing getting rare tracks back into the world.

Lynn has posted here on a number of occasions, last time Dec 2020, & Joe had her address way back in 2013, so you might be able to contact her.

28 Feb 13 - 01:27 AM

I got an e-mail from Lynn, asking how to get hold of Ted Rusoff, who posted to this thread in August, 2012. If you have an e-mail address for Ted that I could pass on to Lynn, please e-mail me.
Thanks.

I was thinking of making a YouTube video with half of each song on it -- a Fair Use sound sampler. I am wary of infringing on copyright holders. Discogs allows you to put links to YouTubes right on the album entry page so what I make will be playable without leaving the Discogs page. I did it with this record: Bell System Youth Radio Commercials 1969

Seems to me this is obviously a long-lost album containing songs of interest to researchers of various sorts and so is a clear case of Fair Use.

About Discogs Discogs began with a mission to document the history of recorded music in a user-generated database ...
With the help of over 602,000 contributors since 2000, Discogs has become a highly respected, crowdsourced discography destination that serves as one of the most trusted resources for music collectors, sellers, researchers, and casual music fans alike. With over 15 million releases and over 8 million artists cataloged, the Discogs Database continues to grow every day ...

Maybe Bruce will be able to find a site where he can post the tracks of this very rare LP so the world can hear it as well as read about it!

Hello. I recently added a new record to Lynn Gold's Discogs discography. It's an obscure album from 1971 titled "Environmental Action: No Time To Waste". She and the psych folk trio Richard, Cam & Bert together perform three cover versions of ecology-themed songs plus one titled "Calico Cat" that is credited as being written by Roslyn Gold.

It seems to me that the record has flown under the radar for so long because it was part of a multimedia teaching kit for schools and the performer credits don't appear on the album, only in the Teacher's Manual from the multimedia teaching kit.

Hope you get a kick out of it!

If you've ever owned a golden retriever you'll know they're not much on spelling:

What is filk?
FILK: what is it?

We can blame me for the Discogs profile & credits. My formal determination at the time was:

Lynn Gold (1) = American filk singer (see links) with no valid Discogs releases. There are more flattering headshots to be sure but we didn't need it.

Lynn Gold (2) = American folk singer and artist of record on all existing credits. I used the album's front jacket photo for the profile. I'm no longer active there but it all seems to be holding true.

To be absolutely clear, I never assumed I was communicating with either 'real' Lynn Gold. Just someone with internet access and an obsession.

Hi, Linn. I'm joe@mudcat.org

As I explained at length above, we can't figure out what to do about the photos. It's some sort of Google algorithm tied to the Google Ads that pay the bills at Mudcat.

Mudcat's owner Max Spiegel is aware of the problem, but hasn't found a solution.

Hi Joe,
Lynn Gold here...finally some excitement...you can see the wrong pic at one of Joe's last posts which has a link to the Twitter post and a blonde woman's pic, not mine, which below has 'whatever happened to Lynn etc, and below is the source supposedly Mudcat Café in bold letters.
Also, if you write Lynn Gold in search bar, four or five pics show up online, one of which is the blonde lady with the same Whatever Happened etc. and Mudcat Café pic, no idea who she is. I personally like her face, silly pic tho. Why I posted the haiku, 'the scent of the flower is in the nose."
My album photo is lots of places and so would appreciate switching it to that photo...important, as am sure you can understand and as soon as possible would be appreciated very much.
And do we get to be called Mudcatters...rhymes with Madhatters...sign of the times.
Hope all's good with you and Max, please say hello...love Mudcat...thanks for being there.

I'm guessing it's a Google ad, but I haven't seen it. Mudcat is supported mostly by those annoying Google ads that litter most Mudcat pages nowadays. Max embeds the the Google-provided script in the Mudcat page, and then the Google algorithm chooses and places the ads as it damn well pleases. The ads can be different for every person who views the page. I've heard talk of the Brian Peters ads, but this is the first I've heard of the Lynn Gold ads. It would help to see some screen shots of what you're seeing, so we know what you're talking about.
Email the screen shots to joe@mudcat.org or max@mudcat.org

You know what they say about how you can't fight City Hall? Well, fighting Google can be harder.

I doubt Brian Peters is best pleased to have his face represented as the archetype of "Folk Singers who are Politically Conservative" either.

Hi...

just popped in and lo...found the recent posts. To say I at first horrified by the tortuous ordeal our fellow Mudcat person , an innocent really, has been subjected to through no fault of his own, would be an understatement.

hard to imagine what it would be like to be the target of these incessant visual assaults by a wild eyed deranged harrigan with whale teeth who could pass for Trump in a cave who shoves babes into the microwave, even if she's not a train person and takes the bus so you just have to be sure to run in the opposite direction...

curious to see an old photo, looked at the Twitter image, and it it is not a picture of me...I've no idea who the lady happens to be...or why on Mudcat and thought not ask the man at the helm, Max, to correct the problem if there is one. I've not seen what was referred to.

sending musical hugs to everyone, friends, for the kindness, one being Frank, last name Hamilton, who often accompanied me in the past and plays many instruments, like his friends Pete Seeger and Guy Carawan, who together gave us 'We Shall Overcome', and was an original member of the Weavers and the founder of several folk music schools that are now legendary and carrying on the tradition of folk music...he doesn't make a fuss about it as he's just busy being himself but just felt like outing him

I'm not familiar with the Pye label and knew nothing about the 'hijacking'. Would appreciate any info on how I can access it or if it is relevant now in any way. Thanks for the input.

just a mention that lots of us still around, writing songs, performing safely, i.e. Judy Collins and Peter Yarrow, and writing...as with my novel which take place largely in Ireland.

peace and love
lynn

I see Discog's has found an unreleased(?) Lynn Gold test pressing for the Pye label if anybody is still following the discography.

Note the Discogs artist for all her releases is Lynn Gold (2)… this is because, many years ago, Google's orthodontically challenged mystery lady 'hijacked' most of the authentic Lynn Gold credits and linked her own online info to a bogus Discogs profile. Girl had issues, hope she got better. (See above: maeve
Date: 23 Jul 11 - 10:33 AM.)

More than half of internet traffic is non-human. Google AI is currently operating at about the golden retriever level. That gawdawful long dead Discogs profile image in Google's adverts is the bot/spider equivalent of a slobbery tennis ball.

I can see the point of the commercial ones since they'll be making Mudcat some money. An image link pointing to this thread, with the face in the image looking like somebody you'd mive to the next carriage on a train to avoid, is not. It's just infuriating, and I get this one EVERY SINGLE TIME I open a Mudcat thread.

I don't know Lynn Gold, but I came across this conversation while looking for some info on Mike Piel. I'm writing a memoir, and I had gotten to the point where I needed to jog my memory about the time in my life when I knew Mike.

At the time, he was emceeing and performing at a restaurant called Appleton's in Longwood, Florida. I was one of the regular performers at the place, and Mike and I hit it off really well. I spent many a pleasant evening drinking wine and swapping stories about the music "business" with Mike and his lovely wife Wendy at their home. Every musician will understand why I put that word in quotes.

Mike was one of the most talented guys I've come across, and I'm sorry I didn't get to say a proper good-bye to that wonderful man before he died.

Nice to read your post Lynn! Do you have any other recordings available (even if only on tape cassette) other then your one LP (which I have and enjoy)? Are you in the LA area now?
Maybe you could get a booking at the Folk Music Center in Claremont, CA or a house concert venue that I know about (also in Claremont.)
The couple who have the house concerts have been putting on house concerts for many years and have had guests like Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen perform there.

Hi Lin and everyone,

First want to thank all of you should you read this for your kindness in writing in and for the words. Means very much to me. To clarify, Lin, Mike and I were at the time a couple, recorded those songs, and the reason I could not put my name on the album was because I was contracted to both Al Grossman and Warner Brothers. The legendary Flick was a Tiffany colored coffeehouse in Coconut Grove, Florida with a lot of fledgling folksingers, some who later became legends, Joni Mitchell being one of them, and the Yale Brothers wanted to put out an album. We were living down there and they were halcyon times, banyon trees, ocean, jasmine breezes, Dr. Lillie and his groundbreaking Dolphin Project which tried to communicate with them, and Fred Neil, Vince Martin, Dave Crosby, Joni, Mike, myself and so many others did a lot of sailing, singing, some popping in to hang out with the dolphins. Peter Neff sang there, is a filmmaker (did an award winning 9 minute film on Billie Holliday posted to the web) and has written a book about the now legendary Fred who spent the rest of his life working to save the dolphins and other wildlife. He was interactive with them, and loved them like kin. Info on Peter's not yet published book, if interested in those times, can be accessed on Facebook and there are lots of posts by Grovies there still around. If any questions about those times will do my best or ask friends i'm still in touch with. Still writing novel with new slants...love checking in and wish we could all hang out...Lynn

I have an album LP, called, "Night at Hootenanny Coffeehouse"
(coffeehouse was located in Miami, Florida)
There is no release date on the album or record but I am guessing maybe around 1964 or 1965?

There are various folk singers on the album (no well known singers)but there are two songs by a guy called, Mike Piel. He and a female sing two songs, "This Little Light of Mine" and "Plasir D" Amour." Strangely on both songs it just says, Mike Piel & friend.

The friend is not identified at all. I was wondering though if it might by Lynn Gold? It seems like I read somewhere she used to hang out with him and sing sometimes as a duet but I don't know if she is the female singing a duet on this album with Mike Piel?

Cannot understand why the female singer was not identified or given credit as singing on these two songs? There are other female singers on the album and their songs and names are given but to be identified just as "friend" on the songs she sings with Mike Piel is strange. Unless it was perhaps her choice not to have her name mentioned.
If anyone knows who the singer is singing duet on the two songs with Mike Piel, please post. Thank you.

three years ago, Lynn wrote "The novel, a love letter really to all the folkies I knew and know now, including Stringsinger, is about the ancient tradition of storytelling, the celtic bards and filli, musicians, poets, artists...the soul of a people...and a time when they were in danger of being silenced. It also has three love stories...druids, saints, villains and forests with lighted eyes."

is this novel published or ready for publication yet?

I have the one LP by Lynn Gold. Has this album ever been released on CD or anything in the works for CD release in near future?
I don't have the capability to digitize the LP myself and would rather get it professionally done anyway. If anyone knows if this LP will be released on CD please post message.

Also, other then the one LP are there any other records
that Lynn Gold released? I don't mean where they have a compilation of different folk singers (with the previously released songs) of Lynn's but different songs? Lynn has such a great talent and wondering why there were not more records? (as far as I know.)

Wonder if she ever went to the Blue Grotto in Los Angeles during the late 1960's? (not too far from the Ash Grove.) The Blue Grotto was a great coffeehouse but not famous like the Ash Grove. People just sang in back room informally. Not on a stage or anything - just a neighborhood coffeehouse with little candles on the tables and a jukebox always playing "The Great Mandela" by Peter, Paul & Mary and other folk songs of the day.

She is vitally active, now, as a writer working on a novel, still a great lady, and I hope will continue to sing her songs. She is very much here and with us.

I got an e-mail from Lynn, asking how to get hold of Ted Rusoff, who posted to this thread in August, 2012. If you have an e-mail address for Ted that I could pass on to Lynn, please e-mail me.
Thanks.

I was on the bill (as part of a trio called The Catch Club) with Lynn at the Ice House in Pasadena at some point in the early 60s. I was enchanted by her voice, her beauty, and her warmth. We stayed in touch for a bit after that and then, as good things tend to do, that slipped away as well. I miss her.

Hi,

Speaking of the great Oscar Brand, was on a Canadian television show with him years ago...one which over the season had many other American folkies on. The format was similar to Hootennanny, the latter, I've been told, having taped over most of the shows so that they are lost to us unless someone out there filmed it from their televisions in their living rooms. It would be a sad loss. Everyone was on that show. I've also sometimes wondered if there is film of such greats as Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Peter LaFarge, Sam Hinton, Bess Hawes, Cisco Houston and so many others. It was a time when I remember glancing down some steps in the Village into a basement folk club rushing by, and seeing Johnny Cash hunched over his gitar, donation basket at his feet...think it was Peter LaFarge or Dylan singing with him. He knew them all. Peter was the son of the Director of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, wrote extraodinarily beautiful songs, and died too young. Will be in touch soon. lynn
