I was at a record store the other day (here in San Diego) and got to talking with the owner about some of those mysteriously vanished folksingers. He said that, as far as he knows, Lynn Gold is still around and is involved with a songwriters' group in LA. I have only one album--are there more? She was a lovely interpreter of traditional songs.

I have that record as well - some copies made it over here to NZ.
I used to have the record with Travis singing "The things I've saved" but it's been missing for about 30 years now (maybe 35).
I'd like someone to sing that at my funeral (but not for awhile yet).

I knew Lynn Gold when she performed at the Ice House in Pasadena. She was a remarkable vocalist and a beautiful person. I last saw her in New York City around 1964. I've often wondered about her and am glad to see there some answers here.

I have Lynn's album: it was such a favourite of mine in the mid-60's. I wasn't very happy at home or at school and I used to play this album and some by Joan Baez, every evening after our family meal and after finishing any homework I needed to do. I loved to sing (still do) and I'm a soprano, so singing along with Lynn Gold and Joan Baez was my escapism: I was "on stage" every evening- I'm sure it kept me sane. I taught myself folk guitar and sang quite often at folk clubs: my absolute favourite song to perform was an adapted version of Lynn Gold's "Bonny Boy" from her album.

So pleased to read that Lynn is still around, still singing. Lynn- thank you for your beautiful singing: you helped a very unhappy teenager to cope (and to turn into a happy adult!)

My one and only Lynn Gold album is a personal treasure! Though scratchy, I still love spinning it on my old turntable to listen to my faves, "Bonny Boy", "Anathea" and "Katie Cruel".

I've thought of you so many times since the early 60's when we were friends for the summer on Cape Cod and our later correspondence.
A favorite memory is the day that you taught me "No Other Name" by Paul Stookey (as yet unreleased, I believe) at the cottage you shared
with M.P.
For many years as I grew into womanhood, you were the one I most wanted to "be like."
I remember you as beautiful inside and out, generous and kind with a pure sweetness in your voice.

I recently discovered in my music collection a stereo tape (open reel) issued by Warner Bros. It brings back memories of growing up in L.A. in the 50s and listening to her being played on KRHM by Skip Weshner and Les Claypool. I now live in sowthwest Ireland and am transfering my collection to CD for preservation and eas of play. Don't know for sure you are in California (but read some time ago you were). Have you thought about doing a concert again? Perhaps at one of the many house concerts around the Los Angeles, Inland Empire areas? Many people would love to hear you perform again.
The thing that is really nice about house concerts is that it is a casual setting and the people attending are really big folk music fans. There is a great one in Claremont, California run by a husband/wife who are musicians themselves & have house concerts at their home about once a month I believe.

I have a superb 45rpm single by Lynn Gold called Sand Mountain Blues. Although this is a blues song, I was surprised to find that there actually is a butterfly called a Sand Mountain Blue. Needless to say it's beautifully sing by Lynn and I really must check out the flip side. If you read this, thanks for the pleasure you've given.

I was astonished to find this about Lynn Gold.I have this record too,and it was my favorite in the 60`s.I don`t think it was released up here in Norway,but sailors used to buy records abroad and sell them to used record shops when they needed vodka.This shops where
treasuregrounds for us boys i Oslo,and that`s where I found it.
I never heard aything quite like it!Amazing!Any chance she will come to Europe?

As a teen in the 70's I found Lynn's album at a yard sale. Absolutely fell in love with her. She was so theraputic for those awkward years. Have been looking for other albums of hers, but so happy you are still making music. Will you please put some more out for us to enjoy? I treasure that album. Thank you for sharing your gift! Hi...just wanted to tell you how much what you've written has meant to me...there are no e-mail addresses to respond to...the sand mountain record is one I'd love to have a copy of, as would Mike Piel's family...we sang on it together...and the tape referred to could possibly be the missing one of my former manager that's mystically found its way to Ireland ahead of me...would love a copy of that, too, as I thought it was lost to me...i would gladly pay any costs..."stringsinger" whose name I won't reveal unless he chooses to, worked on my album with me...was known as the musical genius among us folkies in los angeles...legend was he could pick up any stringed instrument and play it...and he did...beautifully...we barely rehearsed...didn't need to...he did a lot for folk music as an artist and teacher...the writing is going well...about celtic bards...loving it...and you...lynn

I have Lynn's Warner Brothers album and treasure it. I used to hang out with her and Mike Piel, Barry Simms, and so many other great singers in those good old coffee house days. Folk music was never better than when she and Mike would get together on a duet. I'm so happy to find out that she's still around and the music still lives. Just wanted to inquire if there are any plans to release the one and only Lynn Gold album onto CD? Perhaps with a few bonus songs added that were not on the original album? Many people would love to have this available on CD.

Hoping for a concert in the L.A. area would be great too. Perhaps at one of the many house concerts in & around L.A. I go to some of them and it would be wonderful to see Lynn perform at one of these kind of venues,(very laid back and casual).
People who attend these house concerts are so appreciative to hear folk music in a casual and intimate setting.

Frank, are you sure about the ASH GROVE? I checked the website, and that doesn't seem quite the case. AG will have a summer series of five concerts in L.A. on the third (3rd) Sunday, each month June thru Oct.

AG is apparently renting space at TROPICO de NOPAL GALLERY near Downtown. But there was no mention of an ongoing operation. Hell! I guess we have to take what we can get, which is not a lot out here.

I'm surprised because the Lynn Gold in that link took part in "Saturday Night at the Coffee House" aka "A Night at the Ashgrove", recorded in 1958/59 (World Pacific WP 1254), which would seem to be within the right timeline. Here's what the notes saw about that Lynn Gold:

"Brooklyn-born LYNN GOLD, whose performances in Los Angeles coffeehouses and on FM and television have made her a local favorite, sings with warmth and feeling in many languages. Her QUIET LAND OF ERIN, a beautiful lament sung by Ireland's banished rebels, "The Wild Geese," includes portions in Gaelic. ORCHA BAMIDBAR, a song of the desert, is sung in Hebrew, while TINAFTO, the oldest song on the album, is sung partially in Greek. Lynn is accompanied vocally and instrumentally on ORCHA BAMIDBAR by Los Angeles and Israel folksinger Sol Gold, and on QUIET LAND and TINAFTO by Mr. Sandbag." (From this link.)

Was really happy to find my long lost cousin again through this and Travis's website. Thanks Maeve and everybody for all your help. It's been amazing and wonderful.

Been giving a lot of thought about singing again...given the times...all of your loving, supportive words play a large part in this as well as the urging of friends and others. Testing the waters now.

The novel, a love letter really to all the folkies I knew and know now, including Stringsinger, is about the ancient tradition of storytelling, the celtic bards and filli, musicians, poets, artists...the soul of a people...and a time when they were in danger of being silenced. It also has three love stories...druids, saints, villains and forests with lighted eyes.

As someone who also treasured the Warner Brothers album, I thought it might be appropriate to mention, for the sake of completeness, the trio performance of "Shenandoah" by Will Holt, Judy Collins and Lynn, from Oscar Brand's TV show circa 1963, which is on YouTube. Also, there are two tracks by Lynn on the LP, A supplement to The Life History of the United States, vol. 1 ("The Seeds of Love," and "Springfield Mountain"). Both great. I certainly would like to hear whatever is on the Irish tape some day, and see it made publicly available.

The clip on YouTube with Will, Judy and I is from a CBS News program honoring President Kennedy, narrated by Robert Preston and written by Mark Van Doren with among others, Odetta, The Clancy Brothers, Josh White and the American Ballet Company. It was at the height of the struggle and Odetta's singing of Oh Freedom that night was haunting and unforgettable...in fact at rehearsal (just a quick run through sitting on rickety chairs in someone's office before the show) it was sung by her with so much emotion and so beautifully, everyone spontaneously broke into applause, stagehands, staff,and all the other performers. The Clancy Brothers sang No Irish Need Apply which tickled Kennedy whose shown grinning...they lit up the place as only they could and its one of their best performances captured on film. I've a copy of the show and sent off copies to Odetta and Judy several years ago but am told only way to get it now legally is to purchase it. Someone said the Clancy clip is on Yahoo somewhere.
Re the other recording done by Life, would love to hear it again, perhaps get a copy of it. The info on the album cover might be helpful in tracking it down if it is out of print. If you have any sources or info would appreciate knowing.   
Re Ed Pearl and the Grove, there are many concerts given throughout that area by him last I heard. It would be so great to have back all the music, poetry, theatre, etc, again. When the Ash Grove first opened, a gifted director, Walter Brough, directed a musical play called A Part of the Blues which was a compilation of Langston Hughes poetry and writing. On the opening night, sitting there, we heard someone chuckling softly, and it was Langston Hughes.
So much of Americana came through that place and I'm glad its being honored now. It was a labor of love. Also, if anyone has any memories or stories about the Grove, let Ed Pearl know (Ash Grove site) as several people are doing books, films, and the like and it would be really helpful.
Was also wondering what irish tape mentioned is...is there one?

Sorry for the misattribution to the Oscar Brand show. When I first saw the clip some time ago, I had been clicking around various clips from Oscar's show, thought I recognized him from the severe angle from the rear in the clip, and didn't pull down the rest of the description, which clearly indicates the show. Probably the first time in history Oscar Brand was mistaken for Robert Preston. That's how wrongful convictions happen. But it drew out your lovely reminiscence about the show, so no harm, no foul.
The "irish tape" is the open reel tape referred to in the posting by John Wilford that "mysteriously made it to Ireland" before you, as you said.
I would be happy to supply copies of the two tracks from Time/Life.
