Hardi and I went up to see Irish sergeant at a re-enactment Friday night, and did a little campfire visiting the night before battle. Neil sang us a whole bunch of the songs from the songbook he has just compiled and I can't get some of them out of my head! I tried t memorize nmelodies as we went, but there were so many! Thank goodness, smartypants me, I took a mini-recorder in case CRS left me lacking melodies the day after. So now I have a little Irish in my kitchen!

Irish and I discussed the possibility of distributing it in diskette with audio tape format, or I suppose it could be a songsheet and music CD. I dunno. What say you, Mudcatters?

Anyway maybe he'll get mad at me for blowing the horn, but I just had to say, "Irish, WELL DONE!!! You have GOT to get this out into people's hands!"

If it's a songbook he just compliled, can't we just buy copies? Or is it one he did to have as a personal songbook? Sorry, just need some clarification. Would love to see/hear more of it.

Well, Kat, I am looking at my copy. I believe it is a print of the manuscript he is attempting to find a publisher to print and distribute. But it's too good to wait for all that!

The songs have been culled/researchd from a variety of sources. The Introduction includes this: "I have tried to put songs representing as many facets of the Civil War as possible. It is intended as first and foremost a songbook. Secondly, it is a brief glimpse into the horror and majesty that was the American Civil War."

More than 30 songs, words and chords, with an introductory paragraph for each. I hope he will distribute it privately if a publisher is not found right away. We did only a third of them Friday night-- they are the kind I love with LOTS of verses, so we could not get them all in. And I want to learn them all! But I would have to be able to hear them... and so I hope he will make a tape to package with the printed material.

Now if he would do a CatConcert or two and tape them... hmmm...

I guess I'll have to possibly see about e-publishing. I just got word from the publisher last week so I am mulling possibilities. Hopefully I can get my head out the door. Originally I intended to just burn it up for the people in the unit as a kind of campfire thing but I wasn't satisfied with that. I'm debating on either making it bigger or doing volume two. and may talk to kinko's or some one about doing up copies to sell at re-enactments etc. Susan, I have been asked by the men and women of Company A, 12th US Infantry to thank you and Hardi for the vittles. It was greatly appreciated after the drive and setting up. We pushed the Confederates Saturday and they pushed us Sunday. (There is a song in that sentance! I can feel it!) Everybody had a good time and those who were there Friday enjoyed your company and your singing Susan. I will keep all of you apprised opn what's doing with the song book Kindest reguards, Neil

MMArio I have it in word but it can be viewed at www.geocities.com/the12thus/ and go to the section that says songbook. Jim Hurd our unit's web guru as it were even put music to some of it and I think it's in adobe.pdf there but don't quote me. I was dragged into the 21st century reluctantly. Kindest reguard, Neil

Neil, I've just visited your web site (I'm curious :-), it's very interesting! Wow!!! But I'd still love to buy a copy of your song book, with a CD or tape, whatever, if possible. (I prefer learning songs 'by ear').

Well I sallied over and had a look at it on your Company A website. You have a good selection of material covering the different groups involved. I like the bits of background for each. Can't think of anything in particular you left out. Good work.

Neil,

An excellent effort. I am surprised and not that you are having trouble publishing it. So do it your self. Print it up in affordable batches on decent weight paper. Have it bound with a plastic comb binder and sell it at reanactments to raise money for those brave boys in blue well all know so well.

The Battery "B" people in B'Ville would do it if they had the talent.

Contact Dr. Dan Ward at the Onondaga County Cultural Resources Council about the project and see if he can't stear you towards a grant.

I'd like to see song books sold as discs in a friendly format like WP7.0 or MSWord. That way I could down load the stuff I need and store the rest in a more space friendly format. Or I could print the whole thing up as a document and still store the original.

You work is great, I am envious. Come hear the band some time. We are at Coleman's on the first Sunday in June 5:00-8:00.

Neil - Your current format is PDF - it would not be very hard at all to add gifs of the sheet music to that document - and to make midi's of the tune. The whole shebang could be zipped and distributed electronically with ease - and/or burned into a CD. making up copies for physical distribution would not be much harder.

I think it could even be legibly reduced to print as an 5.75 x 8.5 booklet.
