Subject: RE: Mersey Shanty Festival From: Charley Noble Date: 07 May 01 - 05:09 PM Looks likea great line-up! I'd particularly like to hear the Dutch group Kat Yn't Seil again. How big a festival is this, and how is it presented? |
Subject: RE: Mersey Shanty Festival From: alanww Date: 30 May 01 - 05:55 AM I'll be there, singing with the Shellbacks. Any other Mudcatters going? "I went down to Sammy's Bar ... " Except it will actually be The Baltic Fleet! There'll be some great singing! Alan |
Subject: RE: Mersey Shanty Festival From: Noreen Date: 30 May 01 - 06:35 AM Charley, if you click on the link given by Liam's brother above, you'll find out a lot more about the festival. I'm hoping to be there, singing with the Shellbacks too, Alan. I have been told though that the Baltic Fleet (a historic dockside pub) is now boarded up... can anyone confirm this? Noreen |

Subject: RE: Mersey Shanty Festival From: Mrrzy Date: 04 Jun 01 - 08:51 PM That happens, alan. I like this one, it is pronounced like my name, not that I can go or anything *sigh* |
Subject: RE: Mersey Shanty Festival From: Charley Noble Date: 04 Jun 01 - 09:32 PM No wonder the site gets overloaded; it's those magic fingers!;-) |
Subject: RE: Mersey Shanty Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 05 Jun 01 - 05:10 AM The yard of Jonathan Laird was across the other side of the Mersey around Birkenhead, Alan, but as near to Liverpool as dammit! At one time they had a project to rebuild the Alabama at New Brighton but I dunno what became of it - anyone know? I hope to get there on the Sunday. One thing I noticed was they have Morris Dancers on - Now how did they get on at a Maritime gig??? Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: Mersey Shanty Festival From: clansfolk Date: 05 Jun 01 - 06:32 AM Shellbacks...... et al. We'd love to see you at the Singleton Cloggers day of dance (The singing's in The Town Hall Pub from 10.30 til' it stops)for further details check out the "Mudcatters in Lancashire Welcome" link. I've got some leaflets for the Falcon where some of the Shellbacks go hopefully the word will get around - all help welcome whether singing, playing, listning, watching or just passing on details of the event to others..... Many Thanks Pete |
Subject: RE: Mersey Shanty Festival From: alanww Date: 05 Jun 01 - 10:23 AM " ... And down the Mersey she sailed then. Roll Alabama roll. Liverpool fitted her with guns and men. Oh roll Alabama roll." That's the connection with Liverpool! I hear that the Laird's yard looks likely to close. Is it true? That would certainly be the end of an era! Did they really raise the Alabama and transport it to New Brighton (is that somewhere in the USA?) with a view to rebuilding her. I thought that it was sunk by the US sloop of war The Kearsage off Cherbourg - or so said Hugill! |
Subject: RE: Mersey Shanty Festival From: Noreen Date: 05 Jun 01 - 10:49 AM New Brighton is juat along the coast from Birkenhead, alan- across the river from Liverpool. We used to get the ferry from the Pier Head across to New Brighton when I was little for a day out... I heard something along those lines about the Alabama, Dave, but don't know what became of the project. Maybe find out at the weekend. Noreen |

Subject: RE: Mersey Shanty Festival From: Charley Noble Date: 07 Jun 01 - 04:12 PM Ive seen some gret underwater video of the Alabama but she's certainly not going to rise again. Do give us a report how well the Morris Team does demonstrating shanties – jingle, jingle, up she rises! |

Subject: RE: Mersey Shanty Festival From: John Routledge Date: 09 Jun 01 - 07:05 PM Hi Dave -- Festival Marquee at 12 noon. Shellback start formal proceedings. Performances continue in marquee for approx 5 hrs. Shellback sing again outside around 3pm. I think we will be in Baltic Fleet pub in between with muscular singaround(Noreen excepted). There is much entertainment generally going on. If you can make 12 noon we can show you the ropes!! We did a grand version of your "Shantyman" Hope to see you Cheers GB |

Subject: RE: Mersey Shanty Festival From: alanww Date: 11 Jun 01 - 05:39 AM Had a great time! Three Sheets to the Wind were excellent! Super singaround at the Baltic Fleet on Saturday evening - with guest singers/groups, including from Norway. I'll be back next year! "I had a dream the other night ... !" Wassail! Alan |
Subject: RE: Mersey Shanty Festival From: Joan from Wigan Date: 11 Jun 01 - 03:36 PM Had a great time over the weekend with the Shellbacks, wonderful singing, only sorry there wasn't time to see more of the other acts. I agree Three Sheets to the Wind did some great songs very well indeed. I'm looking forward to next year. It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me, but my darling when I think of thee... Joan |
Subject: RE: Mersey Shanty Festival From: Noreen Date: 11 Jun 01 - 09:04 PM Which darling would that be, Joan? :0) Yes indeed, had a wonderful weekend, singing with a great bunch of people who can do marvellous stuff with harmonies, and gave me free rein to try out my own harmonising too! Thanks, Joan for telling me about the Shellback Chorus. I look forward to doing it all again in Cleckheaton and Saddleworth, though singing shanties on the Liverpool waterfront takes some beating! Met three new Mudcatters over the weekend, as well. Alanww and treaties leading songs wonderfully with the Shellbacks, and Dan Milner (Liam's brother) who I saw performing on Sunday, then later joined us for a pint and a sing in the Baltic Fleet. Was a great shame to leave. Good to meet you all! Noreen |
