Subject: Gently Down the Stream of Time From: Chicken Charlie Date: 07 May 01 - 08:02 PM Have chords & most of lyrics, but need first verse. Not on DT. Just to be sure we're talking about the same song, chorus is:
Voices now are hushed forever; As far as I know there is only one verse. Anybody know it? I think Ed Trickett (sp?) recorded it, but can't find it that way. Thanks, CC |
Subject: Lyr Add: GENTLY DOWN THE STREAM OF TIME From: kendall Date: 07 May 01 - 08:12 PM Gently down the stream of time Floats our barque to the sea Sweetly peals the evening chime Hear it echo loud and free. Voices now...etc.
Over all that golden shore I recorded this gem too. Great song. |
Subject: Lyr Add: GENTLY DOWN THE STREAM OF TIME From: Charley Noble Date: 07 May 01 - 08:25 PM Well, here's what I found on the lyrics sheet to Ed's album of the same name: GENTLY DOWN THE STREAM OF TIME (Words by Maj. J. Barton in 1869 via Joe Hickerson as sung by Ed Trickett on album of same name) Gently down the stream of time floats our bark toward the sea; Sweetly peals the evening chime; hear it echo loud (wild) and free. Friends have gone, ties have been broken, fears and doubts and hopes sublime, Careless words, so (though) idly spoken, lie sleeping 'neath the stream of time. (2X) Over on that golden shore, forms unseen are chanting low, Strains we loved in days of yore, memories of long ago. Voices now are hushed forever, tears and flowers strew their grave, And this mighty rushing river buries all beneath its wave. (2X) Hope it's what you want! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gently Down the Stream of Time From: Chicken Charlie Date: 07 May 01 - 09:49 PM Sorry. On a more serious note, thank you (both). This has redeemed an otherwise not terribly memorable day. Charley, you and I must have been separated at birth; our tastes seem remarkably similar. Scary, huh? Thank you, Kendall. Is your version anywhere out there where I can find it?? CC |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gently Down the Stream of Time From: kendall Date: 08 May 01 - 07:37 AM As I said, I recorded it some years ago on a tape/CD called Beginners Luck. Actually, I reversed the order of the verses, but, in a non story song, it makes no difference. I learned it from Ed Trickett about 25 years ago. Ed is a great guy with excellent taste in songs. The way I heard it, it goes..fears and doubts and HOPES OF LIFE...also, barque is the proper spelling, not bark. Right Cranky? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gently Down the Stream of Time From: Charley Noble Date: 08 May 01 - 08:01 AM Not to worry, Charlie, Kendall's "barque" is worse than his "bite." Ed Tricket, by the way, will be doing a concert at the Chocolate Church in Bath, ME, next fall. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gently Down the Stream of Time From: Chicken Charlie Date: 08 May 01 - 07:24 PM Actually if we want to stay in the nautical mode, his barque is worse than his bight. Or, if you don't want your dog nipping people, tie a bowline-on-a-bite. Enough is too much, or something. Thanks again; been obsessive over those words for a while. CC |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gently Down the Stream of Time From: Sandy Paton Date: 08 May 01 - 10:51 PM Yep, and Ed'll sing "hopes sublime," Kendall, if you ask him for the song. Funny, I'd not noticed the change of words on your excellent tape. Hey, folks, you can get the tape direct from Kendall for real money, or you can use a credit card and get either Ed Trickett's version OR Kendall's from Folk-Legacy. You win, either way! Subject: ADD: Gently Down the Stream of Time From: Barbara Shaw Date: 26 Jun 01 - 01:45 PM This is a beautiful song which I learned from Kendall's album "Beginner's Luck." He does it in the key of G, but I transposed it to D for my own voice. There's one possible "Maine-ism" in the first B-part: I listened to him sing the song and transcribed the word "callous" in the line "callous words so idly spoken . . ." but it occurs to me that he's saying "careless" with his DownEast accent! Either one fits, but we'll have to ask Kendall to clarify this and any other variations. Gently Down the Stream of Time Traditional (as sung by Kendall Morse on "Beginner's Luck") D G Messages from multiple threads combined. This message and the ones below are from a new thread. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Gently Down the Stream of Time From: kendall Date: 26 Jun 01 - 04:15 PM You are right my dear, the word is careless. Thanks for pointing that out, in the future, I will be sure to annunciate. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Gently Down the Stream of Time From: Barbara Shaw Date: 27 Jun 01 - 08:35 AM I've got it stuck in my head to say "callous" now, so people will probably think I'm from Maine! How about the rest of the lyrics? Are they right? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Gently Down the Stream of Time From: kendall Date: 27 Jun 01 - 08:46 AM pretty close deah! actually it is Strains we love.. and we old sailors spell it ..Barque, but, it sounds the same. You need not worry about being mistaken for a Mainer, it would take more than one misspronounced word to do that! Lol. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Gently Down the Stream of Time From: kendall Date: 27 Jun 01 - 08:51 AM I learned this song from Ed Trickett, on a Folk Legacy album. (No Matt, it was not a cylinder) Ed has great taste in songs. |
