Subject: Herb Reid's/She Said She Couldn't Dance
From: Aidan Crossey
Date: 09 May 01 - 09:13 AM

On Paddy Keenan's album "The Na Keen Affair", he plays a set of three tunes from Newfoundland - "Herb Reid's/She Said She Couldn't Dance/Shootin' The Bull". These are listed as singles. Not being au fait with Newfoundland dance music, I thought initially that the tunes might be single jigs. Turns out they're more like polkas. (Could they be single hornpipes which someone once described to me when we were both very drunk in a time which suggested some quasi-mythical format ...?)

Are any mudcatters familiar with these tunes and aware of any sources on the web where they might be available (in any format ... preferably abc, but beggars can't be choosers!) My search of all the usual suspects turned up nothing ... if anyone else could help I'd be eternally grateful.

derrymacash, I notice you don't post much. I hope you will stick around... and I hope you get an answer to such a well-framed request.

Don't post much because, to be honest, it seems pretty addictive. And also because I maintain my own site on the web where I post many of my own musical compositions. This requires a surprising amount of time to maintain.

Plus I also have a big input into building up the tablature archive (now over 1,000 tunes tabbed out) on a well-knwon mandolin website.

(PS Note I haven't shamelessly given a link for either!)

Well... (sputtering) WHY NOT???

Give it up!

C'mon!

Posting is ADDICTIVE?

See ... two misposts on this forum ... and no pointers to sources of the tunes.

Anyway on this general subject (Canada), came across a track recently by an outfit called Great Big Sea, "Lukey/Lukaloney". Powerful stuff. Makes me want to head west!

Sorcha ...

Thanks for looking. I'll have to learn them by ear, then. When done I'll post them as abc somewhere.

The panic's over ... the tunes are found.

Well, almost!

"She Said She Couldn't Dance" is within Alf Warnock's excellent (eclectic - even esoteric in parts) abc collection, where it's listed as "Running The Goat #3").

"Shootin' The Bull" by Geoff Panting which forms the third polka in the set played by Paddy Keenan is also contained in Alf's collection, where it is listed as "Running The Goat #4".

"Herb Reid's" wasn't listed. I have set it out by ear as I would play it on the mandolin/bouzouki (I haven't been able to catch all of Paddy Keenan's nuances). The rub is that I don't carry "traditional" abc on my own website (http://www.geocities.com/paythereckoning) - I use it to publish my own original tunes. So it doesn't seem appropriate to post it there. Therefore I have forwarded the abc to Alf Warnock (http://www.magma.ca/~warnock/abc/). and hopefully he'll include the tune alongside its siblings (aaaaah!).

Your safest bet for the moment - if you play the mandolin, bouzouki, tenor banjo (or, presumably, fiddle) - would be to visit the mandolincafe (http://www.mandolincafe.com) where I have posted a tablature version of this tune, plus the others mentioned above plus two more "Running The Goat" polkas. (Go to tab archive and look in the "New - Last 30 days" section.

Alternatively (phew) I could e-mail the abc to you if you would like. Visit my site (listed above) and click on any of the "mailto"s with which the site is littered.

(And if you DO visit, don't forget to let me know how you find the tunes and any of the other material - reviews, vignettes, etc).

Good luck - thanks for trying - and I'll be back.

... Aidan

You could also start a new thread here and post all three, but e mail would be fine, too. I am wise@communicomm.com Thanks! I love new tunes!

If anyone does happen to have any information on Herb Reid's tune, I would love the opportunity to find out whatever you've got! Herb Reid was my grandfather and I can hear the song in my head like it was yesterday. He died when I was 7, about 17 years ago now. The only person who can play that song like he could is my mother, who has not touched an accordian since he passed. My email is tiffeh.star@gmail.com... sorry to drop in like this unannounced, but I am trying to track this song down so I can have it in my wedding reception to remember my grandfather!

:)

I found this thread while looking for the words for 'She said she couldn't dance'.
There is a set of Newfoundland tunes here with the dance that goes with them. Running The Goat/Round Ol' Ruby's Garden/She Said She Couldn't Dance/Final Goat Tune.
I love the energy. And the way the rest of the set are steering the less experienced couple through. On another forum it was pointed out that the circular Strip the willow figure dates back to the dance Boulanger
