Old friend, JIM CRAIG, has the best damn voice (male) to come out of the Chicago area folk scene during the whole last half of the twentieth century. (That's just one guy's humble opinion.)

As MAG has said, Jim does own and operate HOGEYE MUSIC---a great store in Evanston, Illinois. I think the address is 1920 Central Street; right across from Dyche Stadium where Northwestern University plays their home football games. I do get nostalgic for old musical times just writing this.

And that was a great tape Jim made back in '86. He has never shown much inkling to record in the past---unless something has been issued by him that I don't know about. But I've been out of the loop for over a decade now,.. so don't hold me responsible for false info. The phone at Hogeye Music is (or was) 847-475-0260

The song "Sam, you made the Pants too Long" is the song that "made" a young burlesque performer named Red Buttons. That was in 1939.Someone important heard him sing it in a show and gave him his big break.
Barbara Streisand also recorded it. We do it in the Klezmer band.

Thanks a lot, MAG - I looked and looked, and just couldn't find it. I know I've got it around here somewhere.

OK, This from Jim Craig's " ... in a nutshell" recording, impeccably arranged and picked by himself (my comment)

You made the river flow, the flower grow
You made the weak and the strong
But Lord, you made the night too long

You made the robin sing, the song of spring
And me you gave a lonely song
Oh Lord, that's why the night is long

I've got a heart, I've got a cabin
Doors are open wide
But what good is a heart, what good is a cabin
If there's no one inside

You made the mountain high, the earth, the sky
So who am I to say you're wrong
But Lord, you made the night too long

repeat previous two; vamp out Yeah, the night's too long
You made the night too long ^^

this tape is copyright 1987, and I know the address is wrong, but as mentioned previously, Jim is now owner of Hogeye Music, right on the chicago border, in Evanston IL.

There's probably more, but this is all I can find for now.
LORD (LAWD), YOU MADE THE NIGHT TOO LONG was a Top 20 hit for both jazz giant Louis Armstrong and bandleader Guy Lombardo in 1932. A parody, entitled "Sam, You Made The Pants Too Long" was written by Milton Berle in 1940 and recorded by both Vaughn Monroe and Barbra Streisand.

LORD, YOU MADE THE NIGHT TOO LONG
(Sam Lewis & Victor Young )

You made the river flow, the flowers blow
You made the weak and the strong
But Lord you made the night too long

You made the robin sing a song of spring
And me you gave a lonely song
That's why you made the night too long.

It was a hit for Louis Armstrong in the early 30s; Guy Lombardo did it, too.

Subject: Lyr Add: SAM YOU MADE THE PANTS TOO LONG ^^
From: IanC
Date: 10 May 01 - 08:36 AM

Sorry, can't find the lyrics on the net. Here's a parody I found, though.

SAM, YOU MADE THE PANTS TOO LONG
- words by Fred Whitehouse and Milton Berle
- adapted from "Lord, You Made The Night Too Long"
by Sam M. Lewis and Victor Young

Trousers dragging, slowly dragging through the street
Yes! I'm walking, but I'm walking without feet!
I'm not finding fault at all
You're too big and I'm too small
But Sam, you promised me both ends would meet

You made the coat and vest fit the best
You made the lining nice and strong
But Sam, you made the pants too long

You made the peak lapel look so swell
So who am I to say you're wrong?
But Sam, you made the pants too long

They got a belt and they got suspenders
So what can they lose?
But what good are belts and suspenders
When the pants are hanging over the shoes

You feel a winter breeze up and down the knees
The belt is where the tie belongs
'Cause Sam, Sam, Sam you made the pants too long!^^

Cheers!
Ian

Not quite Folk, I admit (unless it's got antecedents); but I sat on my 78 about thirty years ago! Some of you must be old enough to remember it?

Ta,
Steve
