Hi, a friend of mine is moving away, only an hour and a bit drive, but going none the less. He has been part of a small group I play music with, low key stuff, but good for the soul. He is leaving the place of his birth, in fact the family farm where he has lived for the past fifty or so years, for all the right reasons, but it is a real heart break for him. Anyone know any good songs we could sing for him to help him on his way.
Thanks.

"Moving Day" I think a Charlie Poole song.

"Moving On " By Ewan Macoll

"Times Are Getting Hard" I think by Lee Hayes, on a Fennig's All Stars recording.

"Bye Bye Black Bird"

Pretty much an endless supply.

Don

How about "I Dropped a Load on the Road When I Stepped On a Toad?" Works on a lot of levels.............Guy walking from one place to another (adventure) and steps on a toad, killing it (death/drama) and this scares him to the point of a bowel movement (humor/tragedy) and he luckily encounters a woman interested in scatology (love interest). Very touching number......"2" I believe.

Trad of course..............

Waiddaminnit-- is he already a Mudcatter? If not, perhaps he can stay in touch with you here and make new friends here too.

The best serious song is "This Old House" (Not the old one that goes "This old house done seen my children, this old house done seen my wife...," etc.; this is a considerably newer and sadder one that the Rice Brothers recorded.)

The best funny one is "Right, Said Fred."

IMO

Peter.

Midchuck, is "Right, Said Fred" the British Music Hall ditty about the moving crew? I can't seem to find the words in the DT. Do you have them? I believe Davy Jones sings this, among others. It has the recurring line, "And so we had a cup of tea..."

Can't find it in the Digitrad, but Tommy Makem sings one, maybe he wrote it: Farewell, my friends, I'm leaving soon, I'm gone away for a while, but I'll be back to see you all, should it be ten thousand miles, my friends, should it be ten thousand miles.

"Who will Watch the Home Place" certainly does the job well. If I ever get back to the family farm, maybe I'll play it backwards.

Oh, there's also the Hazel Dickens/Alice Garard song, "You Gave Me a Song" which has some of the same sentiment.

How about "The Outside Track" the Henry Lawson poem - performed by Garnet Rogers on his album of the same name.

Yes.

I can't seem to find the words in the DT. Do you have them?

I have them in print around here someplace. I don't think I have them on disc.

I believe Davy Jones sings this, among others.

I got it from Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen's singing.

Peter.

"I Knew this Place" by Dave Mallett. Especially poignant since he's leaving a place known intimately to him.

Probably a lot more dramatic then your friend's case, but certainly traumatic, this Si Kahn song is one of my favorites. It tells a too accurate story of the exodus from the southern mountains to the jobs in the cities.

BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN REFUGEE........Scroll down to the song.

I remember a good old County Down song called 'The Moving of the Furniture' or sometimes known as 'Carney's Flitting'. It was collected by Sam Henry but I an not sure if it was ever published. Maybe John Moulden can assist here, I'm sure he must know of it. Very funny indeed.

Thanks for the words to "Right, Said Fred," a truly moving song! I also have the David Jones cassette but was too lazy to transcribe it myself.

BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN REFUGEE
As recorded by Si Kahn and the Looping Brothers on "Aragon Mill: The Bluegrass Sessions" (2013)

I'm workin' in a factory, thinkin' how it feels
To be bringin' home good money like my daddy never seen,
But a feelin' follows after me like a hound dog at my heels
'Cause I know that I'll never see my mountain home again.

Oh, they say that you can't go home again,
Never sit and talk among your childhood friends,
Never live among your neighbors and your kin.
No, you'll never see your mountain home again.

Down by the railway station in the early afternoon
You can see them carryin' bundles that are all done up in twine.
They hear the whistle from the south; they're sayin' their goodbyes,
And they say they'll be back but they're leavin' for all time.

For they know that they can't go home again,
Never sit and talk among their childhood friends,
Never live among their neighbors and their kin.
No, they'll never see their mountain homes again.

In Cincinnati, Baltimore, Chicago and Detroit,
You can find us by the thousands with our husbands and our wives.
If you wonder what we're doin' here so far from our mountain homes,
We're Blue Ridge Mountain refugees fighting for our lives.

And we know we can't go home again,
Never sit and talk among our childhood friends,
Never live among our neighbors and our kin.
No, we'll never see our mountain homes again.

"We 'are gonna move my Father Said,
We,re gonna move my father said ,
Bury the hatchet one more time
And leave it Lyin in the land.
Let the old barns fall to ground,
Let the fence rot where it stands.

Good song about leaving small farms in the fifties .

It depends on the reason for moving.   Here's one of the most poignant songs I ever heard.....about moving as a result of a separation.

DAVID ACKLES
Waiting For The Moving Van Lyrics

Standing on the front porch of the old frame house in
town
In another day or two, It all starts coming down
I wonder what theyll do about the oak tree with the
swing
I never built the tree house, but I had plans
For so many things I am trying not to think of while I
can
Waiting for the moving van to come

The front door has that rusty hinge I never did repair
You used to hear it late at night and meet me on the
stair
Well, I work the daylight now, Im always home by six
Now theres lots of time, and nothing left to fix
Except the things I am trying not to think of while I
can
Waiting for the moving van to come

Its almost summer here
Your favorite time of year
Hey, didnt we love to hear the children play
We had some happy times
Ten years is so much time
Youd think we both could find a way

No, I wont get maudlin; Its just being here alone
It too some getting used to, but I like it on my own
I just wish theyd get here soon -- I have so much work
to do
Plans to make, and a whole new life to think about;
But you I am trying not to think of while I can
Waiting for the moving van to come.

I can't go back to the homestead, the shack no longer stands
They said I was un-needed, had no claim to the land
They said, "Come on, get moving, it's the only thing for you"
But how can you keep moving unless you migrate too?

How can you keep on moving unless you migrate too?
They tell ya to keep on moving but migrate, you must not do
The only reason for moving and the reason why I roam
To move to a new location and find myself a home

Agnes 'Sis' Cunningham
