Subject: TV characters that shoulda been folkies From: GUEST,star Date: 13 May 01 - 10:30 AM Which TV characters do you think should have been folksingers? My vote is for George Costanza from Seinfeld because he was always whining about something or other, just like folksingers do in their songs. |
Subject: RE: TV characters that shoulda been folkies From: RichM Date: 13 May 01 - 11:43 AM Do you want a thread about whiny people on TV? Or one about folksingers?
Folksingers, like other artists, are those who bring a creative perspective about society to the rest of us. |

Subject: RE: TV characters that shoulda been folkies From: GUEST,Mr Red Date: 14 May 01 - 10:44 AM There was this character in Emmerdale (UK) who was making rockets in the shed mind you he was played by Bernard Wrigley - the Bolton Bullfrog folksinger par excellence and part time bit actor. |
Subject: RE: TV characters that shoulda been folkies From: Walking Eagle Date: 14 May 01 - 11:05 AM How about a TV character that WAS a folk singer? Andy Griffith was. Also, does anyone remember Maynard on The Doby Gillis show? |
Subject: RE: TV characters that shoulda been folkies From: Blackcatter Date: 14 May 01 - 01:01 PM Maynard, hmmmm - didn't he go on to do something else? hmmmm. By the way, EVERYBODY on Seinfeld was whiny - that's why the show was so popular. The vast majority of people identified with the characters (present company excluded, of course). Frankly, I do really get the premise of this thread - just about anybody could be a folkie, couldn't they? Maybe the idea sould be - pick a TV character and a song they might sing? I don't have any examples at the moment. Also: seeing Gillian Anderson playing tin whistle has always been a fantasy of mine . . . |

Subject: RE: TV characters that shoulda been folkies From: KitKat Date: 14 May 01 - 03:21 PM John Tams as Rifleman Hagman in Sharpe - lousy actor but a great singer! Pat |
Subject: RE: TV characters that shoulda been folkies From: GUEST,Phil Cooper Date: 14 May 01 - 03:35 PM If you remember the old series, He & She, Hamilton Camp played the janitor (I thought he was great in the part). He also appeared in a cameo on WKRP. On a different format, Barry Dransfield as the Fiddler in the Mel Gibson/Anthony Hopkins version of Mutiny on the Bounty was also refreshing. As far as the whiny concept goes, I don't think folkies have monopoly on that. |
Subject: RE: TV characters that shoulda been folkies From: Roughyed Date: 14 May 01 - 05:29 PM Changing the subject slightly, the best television character who actually was a folk singer was Harry H Corbett of Steptoe and Son fame. Although I once played a gig on the same bill as the bloke who is in Cops. Wouldn't you like to see Niles out of Frasier singing a folk song? It would have to be an Armenian goat herders song or something. |
Subject: RE: TV characters that shoulda been folkies From: Murray MacLeod Date: 14 May 01 - 06:00 PM I havw always thought it would have been nice to see Merle Travis in a film. Maybe a war movie, singing a little, playing a little, entertaining his fellow soldiers ...................... Murray |
