Who's William Vague?- I'd get rid of most of them-preferably to the middle of the north sea. I think Dennis Skinner would be OK, Tony Benn, Maybe Mo-but Mandy, Tony " Guitar man" Bluuuur and some of his lot-should be buried at sea, as they seemed to forget their roots very quickly when they got power. Prescot should be publically dieted to near death-just to remind him of how many of the members of his union, who put him into power live. Gordon Brown should have to live on £70.00 a week and see how a 5p rise helps him.

Most tories should be sent to China as they share the same ideas on human rights, the others should be made to live in the poorest areas of the country. MP's should be paid, average wages to see how the rest of us live. It should be a job for those who want to do it for the love of the people, not the profit to be made from it.

I couldn't do their job - and I dare say they couldn't do mine! But I do think Mo is an interesting character, she is funny, very quick witted and knows what she wants to say, she doesn't let herself get steam rollered by mean talking interviewers - and she has my respect, so yes, I could see her being a leading light in the party sooner rather than later, If Mr Hague did get lucky in the election, I think she would have to be his right hand man (NO I WON'T BE POLITICALLY CORRECT AND WRITE PERSON!)

At least Mo Mowlem comes across as honest, which is rare in politicians these days.

I'm with Eric on this one, but I'd be a bit more specific and unkind about rates of pay for members of Parliament.

Backbenchers of all parties to get the national median wage (not the average; that's higher).
Shadow ministers to get the legal minimum wage.
Ministers to get the basic Income Support rate.

Travel expenses and rent for cheap rooms in London (bed-and-breakfast would probably do the trick) allowed, of course, but all other income from any source deducted from their wage, just as if they were claiming benefit, and all surplus income after that, withheld while they hold office.

I think we might see one or two changes in attitude amongst them.  Of course, we might also see fewer aspirant politicians, but at least those who survived might have some understanding of what the consequences of their actions are; at present this is never brought home to them.  If there were justice in the world, Thatcher would be living, friendless and alone, in a damp high-rise flat in a nameless inner city, afraid to go out onto the street for fear of being mugged, and without enough money to heat the place or eat properly.  That, after all, is what she condemned so many other people to; the ones, that is, that she didn't actually kill.

Rant (and fantasy) over.  Yes, I'd certainly prefer Mo at the top,but I'd rather have had the chance of Tony Benn or Ken Livingston...

There's a lot of fairly shallow and stereotypical rhetoric in this thread, not much of which is based on reality. Any "party faithfuls" that still exist are deluding themselves if they think things would be any different no matter who is in power. Apart from some fairly ridiculous and outdated cartoon characters (some of which are mentioned above) our politicians have become totally bland.

Just a small point, when people talk about "how much they are paid/how little we are paid" - every job has a rate of pay and the rate of pay is, for many people, one of the more significant reasons for choosing that line of work. So anybody becoming a nurse or teacher knows that they are opting for low wages from the start. To object to somebody else's rate of pay and suggest they live on a pittance is really pretty childish.

And as for the suggestion that Mrs Thatcher killed people .... that's simply carrying prejudice beyond the point of common sense and reaching a whole new level of offensiveness. There will always be political disagreement (even for people like me who have no political leanings or preferences) but there's no point in going quite so far over the top.

And whole comunities have been destroyed as a result of her policies - think of Corby, think of the Notts, Yorkshire and Kent coalfields...
But when a politician has said "There is no such thing as society", you know what to expect, I suppose.
Sorry, getting into rant mode there.
As for Mo; yes she's intelligent, iconoclastic and gutsy, and I've got more time for her than most, but she was also capable of some naivete in Northern Ireland. On the whole though, yes - she's a good thing (as is Clare Short). A little too blunt and honest to be a PM, however.

Gervase, her problem in NI was that she was honest and cared about trying to solve the problem. What naivety! I mean, if NI actually _was_ solved, Paisley and Adams would be out of their jobs, and they wouldn't want that, would they? ;-) So they both pressured Blair to get rid of her and they got themselves a nice politician instead with Teflon shoulders and low moral standards (Mandelson). And they lived happy ever after, keeping the status quo of fighting each other intact.

Did anybody see them on the LibDem election broadcast? I was busy watching Liverpool win.

Terry K reckons there's a market rate for every job. Given all the people who scramble to get elected, clearly the rate for the job is well above what the market would indicate is appropriate. Like most "top jobs".

What I rather imagine is going to happen is that the Tories are going to get such a hammering that they'll realise there's just no room to the right of Tony Blair, without falling over the edge of lunacy, and they'll have a shake-out and reposition themselves to the left of New Labour, which wouldn't be hard.

Mo Mowlem would be a good president.

Given how far to the right the Tories have drifted, and that the Lib-Dems are now the "left-of'centre" party in the UK, I see little chance of much co-operation between the two!
Interestingly Charles Kennedy seems to reserve his blackest bile for Tory policies, while delivering much milder criticism to Labour's plans.
It's a shame that Blair's "big tent" philosophy seems to extend only to big business and the private sector rather than embracing broader ideas. As a long-standing Labour party member, I'm not entirely gruntled with the way the party's moving at the moment, and Tony's ten-year vision outlined earlier this week sits rather uncomfortably with my personal views.
