Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Grab Date: 15 May 01 - 08:15 AM Well, she's the only one of them with (a) style, (b) guts, (c) a sense of humour, (d) personality, and (e) obvious honesty. She'd get my vote! Graham. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Bagpuss Date: 15 May 01 - 08:18 AM So now we just have to organise a coup... |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Les from Hull Date: 15 May 01 - 08:26 AM But now we may see more of Tony Benn as he's giving up his seat to 'devote more time to politics'! |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Lyndi-loo Date: 15 May 01 - 08:26 AM Ahh that most dangerous of Scottish beasts ; the military coup |

Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Bagpuss Date: 15 May 01 - 12:06 PM I cast thee out evil Big Tim. For this is the Mo Mowlam adoration thread and none shall cast a slur against the name of the most high lest they take the consequences. And the consequences indeed shall be grave. Or something. Bagpuss |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: John J Date: 15 May 01 - 12:46 PM She'd get my vote any day. At least she walks the talk. John J |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Les from Hull Date: 15 May 01 - 12:51 PM I must admit I do prefer the politicians that aren't like politicians, and Lo! the name of the Blessed Mo leads all the rest. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Eric the Viking Date: 15 May 01 - 02:26 PM Who's William Vague?- I'd get rid of most of them-preferably to the middle of the north sea. I think Dennis Skinner would be OK, Tony Benn, Maybe Mo-but Mandy, Tony " Guitar man" Bluuuur and some of his lot-should be buried at sea, as they seemed to forget their roots very quickly when they got power. Prescot should be publically dieted to near death-just to remind him of how many of the members of his union, who put him into power live. Gordon Brown should have to live on £70.00 a week and see how a 5p rise helps him. Most tories should be sent to China as they share the same ideas on human rights, the others should be made to live in the poorest areas of the country. MP's should be paid, average wages to see how the rest of us live. It should be a job for those who want to do it for the love of the people, not the profit to be made from it. The world is now right and peaceful I have spoked!!! say what you like I don't care............ |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Linda Kelly Date: 15 May 01 - 05:29 PM Mo Mowlam is the product of Coundon Court School for young gals - the headmistress Ms Foster used to eat first formers for dinner, those that survived went on to become brilliant successful intelligent young women..hang on I went there......... |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Linda Kelly Date: 15 May 01 - 05:38 PM that should have read brilliant successful beautiful young women (a gal can dream can't she!!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Hawker Date: 15 May 01 - 06:10 PM I couldn't do their job - and I dare say they couldn't do mine! But I do think Mo is an interesting character, she is funny, very quick witted and knows what she wants to say, she doesn't let herself get steam rollered by mean talking interviewers - and she has my respect, so yes, I could see her being a leading light in the party sooner rather than later, If Mr Hague did get lucky in the election, I think she would have to be his right hand man (NO I WON'T BE POLITICALLY CORRECT AND WRITE PERSON!) Lucy |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Lanfranc Date: 15 May 01 - 06:18 PM Methinks Hawker is confusing Mo Mowlem with a certain virgin Tory harridan, which is a gross calumny on the former! My favourite verse in the British national anthem is rarely sung: "Confound their politics, frustrate their knavish tricks.." A plague on all their houses - O for another Jo Grimond, or failing that, David Sutch! At least Mo Mowlem comes across as honest, which is rare in politicians these days. As Frank Zappa was once reputed to have said "Don't vote for politicians, it only encourages them!" |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 15 May 01 - 08:58 PM I'm with Eric on this one, but I'd be a bit more specific and unkind about rates of pay for members of Parliament. Backbenchers of all parties to get the national median wage (not the average; that's higher). Shadow ministers to get the legal minimum wage. Ministers to get the basic Income Support rate. Travel expenses and rent for cheap rooms in London (bed-and-breakfast would probably do the trick) allowed, of course, but all other income from any source deducted from their wage, just as if they were claiming benefit, and all surplus income after that, withheld while they hold office. I think we might see one or two changes in attitude amongst them. Of course, we might also see fewer aspirant politicians, but at least those who survived might have some understanding of what the consequences of their actions are; at present this is never brought home to them. If there were justice in the world, Thatcher would be living, friendless and alone, in a damp high-rise flat in a nameless inner city, afraid to go out onto the street for fear of being mugged, and without enough money to heat the place or eat properly. That, after all, is what she condemned so many other people to; the ones, that is, that she didn't actually kill. Rant (and fantasy) over. Yes, I'd certainly prefer Mo at the top,but I'd rather have had the chance of Tony Benn or Ken Livingston... Malcolm |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: paddymac Date: 16 May 01 - 01:46 AM The divine Ms M (as in Mo) was well-liked by those who knew her during her stint here in Tallahassee. Of course, that was when she was "just" Mo. Lovely person, by all accounts. Thoughtful, inquisitive, and ballsy as well. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Terry K Date: 16 May 01 - 02:22 AM There's a lot of fairly shallow and stereotypical rhetoric in this thread, not much of which is based on reality. Any "party faithfuls" that still exist are deluding themselves if they think things would be any different no matter who is in power. Apart from some fairly ridiculous and outdated cartoon characters (some of which are mentioned above) our politicians have become totally bland. Just a small point, when people talk about "how much they are paid/how little we are paid" - every job has a rate of pay and the rate of pay is, for many people, one of the more significant reasons for choosing that line of work. So anybody becoming a nurse or teacher knows that they are opting for low wages from the start. To object to somebody else's rate of pay and suggest they live on a pittance is really pretty childish. And as for the suggestion that Mrs Thatcher killed people .... that's simply carrying prejudice beyond the point of common sense and reaching a whole new level of offensiveness. There will always be political disagreement (even for people like me who have no political leanings or preferences) but there's no point in going quite so far over the top. With all due respect. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Jon Freeman Date: 16 May 01 - 02:38 AM Dafydd Wigley for PM! Seriously, if I still was in Wales, I probably would vote Plaid Cymru this time but I guess it will have to be liberal here... It's just a measure of how pissed off I am with Labour and I don't want to see Conservatives... now, Eric, Dennis Skinner would get my vote. Jon |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Gervase Date: 16 May 01 - 04:21 AM Thatcher may not have killed people directly, but her decisions and policies did. Remember the Belgrano? And whole comunities have been destroyed as a result of her policies - think of Corby, think of the Notts, Yorkshire and Kent coalfields... But when a politician has said "There is no such thing as society", you know what to expect, I suppose. Sorry, getting into rant mode there. As for Mo; yes she's intelligent, iconoclastic and gutsy, and I've got more time for her than most, but she was also capable of some naivete in Northern Ireland. On the whole though, yes - she's a good thing (as is Clare Short). A little too blunt and honest to be a PM, however. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: sian, west wales Date: 16 May 01 - 04:33 AM Oh, Great, Jon! Couldn't you have gone Plaid a couple of years earlier - like when you were voting in Wales? Anyway, if ya wanna throw a spanner in your local works, send me an address and I'll send you some posters to put in your windows - it REALLY throws the local canvassers! And if we can have a free vote, across party lines - I'm for MO as well! My kind o' gal! sian |

Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Grab Date: 16 May 01 - 12:04 PM Gervase, her problem in NI was that she was honest and cared about trying to solve the problem. What naivety! I mean, if NI actually _was_ solved, Paisley and Adams would be out of their jobs, and they wouldn't want that, would they? ;-) So they both pressured Blair to get rid of her and they got themselves a nice politician instead with Teflon shoulders and low moral standards (Mandelson). And they lived happy ever after, keeping the status quo of fighting each other intact. Graham. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Eric the Viking Date: 17 May 01 - 03:35 PM I though the secret love child was Tony Blair. By the way Prescot is now Tony's "Left hand" man. "I shall smite thee down if thee eggs me varlet!!!!" |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Matthew Edwards Date: 17 May 01 - 04:37 PM A report in The Guardian today, 17 May, mentions that Charles Kennedy's parents did an impersonation of the "folk duo Pete and Peggy Seeger".Were they formed after the demise of that other great duo Ewan and Kirsty MacColl? Did anybody see them on the LibDem election broadcast? I was busy watching Liverpool win. Can anyone come with suggestions for other "family" groups that never existed, but should or could have?It might be better to start a new thread for the benefit of those who don't know or don't care about the General election. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: death by whisky Date: 17 May 01 - 05:00 PM I have every respect for MO.sHE WAS VERY BRAVE AND HONEST IN THE nORTH,SHE WOULD BE A GOOD pm.As for yesterday,The Prescott punch,Blair challenged outside a hospital,Haigue didn't have it easy, and to top it all the best soccer match for years. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 17 May 01 - 08:47 PM Terry K reckons there's a market rate for every job. Given all the people who scramble to get elected, clearly the rate for the job is well above what the market would indicate is appropriate. Like most "top jobs".
What I rather imagine is going to happen is that the Tories are going to get such a hammering that they'll realise there's just no room to the right of Tony Blair, without falling over the edge of lunacy, and they'll have a shake-out and reposition themselves to the left of New Labour, which wouldn't be hard.
Mo Mowlem would be a good president. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Skipjack K8 Date: 17 May 01 - 10:01 PM A tenner says William's head will be on a pike on London Bridge on June 8th, and Ken will sweep to a leadership effectively unopposed. At least he's a jazz nut?! |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: paddymac Date: 17 May 01 - 11:59 PM Skipjack K8 - Who's "Ken"? Is that the London mayor, called "Red Ken" by some, but apparently quite a popular "populist" in the eyes of his constituents. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Linda Kelly Date: 18 May 01 - 03:48 AM My greatest memory of the last general election was the downall of Michael Portillo (although gracious in defeat). It was in the early hours of the morning and on the announcement I let out a great cry of both amazement and joy. Simultaneously I could hear Whoops of delight and peels of laughter from virtually every single household within earshot. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Bagpuss Date: 18 May 01 - 05:06 AM Matthew Edwards - Ewan and Kirsty McColl weren't exactly a duo. I think they rarely, if ever, performed together. They didn't really like eachother's style of music. Bagpuss |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: okthen Date: 18 May 01 - 06:03 AM Is this the best political thread we Brits can come up with? Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Scabby Douglas Date: 18 May 01 - 06:09 AM Bagpuss - offthread .. but you missed the point of matthew's post. He was being ironic about E & K McColl.. and specifically invited suggestions about Family groups that never existed.. NEW THREAD?? |
Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Gervase Date: 18 May 01 - 06:34 AM Given how far to the right the Tories have drifted, and that the Lib-Dems are now the "left-of'centre" party in the UK, I see little chance of much co-operation between the two! Interestingly Charles Kennedy seems to reserve his blackest bile for Tory policies, while delivering much milder criticism to Labour's plans. It's a shame that Blair's "big tent" philosophy seems to extend only to big business and the private sector rather than embracing broader ideas. As a long-standing Labour party member, I'm not entirely gruntled with the way the party's moving at the moment, and Tony's ten-year vision outlined earlier this week sits rather uncomfortably with my personal views. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mo Mowlam for Prime Minister From: Matthew Edwards Date: 18 May 01 - 07:57 AM Bagpuss:Hi! I'm sorry to have misled you,as ScabbyDoug pointed out, I was making an ironic comment on a journalist's error where a newspaper referred to Pete and Peggy Seeger as a "folk duo".The English sense of humour often doesn't travel very well.My apologies.
