Subject: ale is physic for me From: GUEST,Roberto Campo Date: 15 May 01 - 01:42 PM I'd like to have the lyrics of the song Ale is physic for me. A version of it is in Deep Lancashire. It isn't in the DT. Strange that such a fascinating and true title has been ignored. Please, help me with the lyrics of the song. Thank you. Roberto Campo |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: ale is physic for me From: Sooz Date: 16 May 01 - 01:27 PM I've just listened to it by Mike Harding thinking I might jot down the words. However they in in undecypherable dialect and I can only makeout about one word in three. Sorry! Its on a compilation CD "English Folk Anthology" R2CD 40-106 if that helps. |
Subject: Lyr Add: ALE IS PHYSIC From: GUEST,Chris Nixon Date: 16 May 01 - 03:31 PM Ale is Physic In walking past a doctor's house at the top of Newton Ee, Twas there I got a sudden stop and gan be feared to dee, Me hand shook like an aspen leaf, I shivered [dithered ?]/ in me shoon, It seemed as dark as twelve at neet tho' twere but twelve at noon, I thowt I saw the gallows tree where yon cock thief were hung And that Owd Nick were chasin me and there he'd have me hung, I groped me way to t'doctor's door and there I tumbled down, The flewer it gave me such a stroke it welly broke me crown. Now what were doctor thinking of to bring to mesel', To save a sick and dying man so feared of death and knell [death an' 'ell], He brought no lance, he brought no draught that quickens or that soothes, But brought a glass of home brewed ale as had come from Willy Booth's. He placed it in me wackerin' hand that were so pale and thin, I swiped it down all in one draught and I've never ailed nowt since. Ale is physic, ale is physic, ale is physic for me…. This is all I can remember off the top of me head, so if you can get hold of Deep Lancashire, it might help you translate the very rich dialect. Newton Ee is presumably Newton Heath Welly = verily Wackerin = shaking ??? = some part of door or doorstep which escapes an ailing memory Hope all this helps.

Subject: RE: Req/Add: Ale is Physic for me From: GUEST,Paul Burke Date: 16 Dec 04 - 10:40 AM Round Newton Heath way, 'floor' would be pronounced more like 'flewer'. Bit like Bringle Eaf where they ad canguls in bockuls on t' mankulpiece. A cautionary case of alcoholic DTs being calmed by the very poison itself :) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req/Add: Ale Is Physic for Me From: FreddyHeadey Date: 10 Feb 20 - 06:38 AM ^^^^^ Mr Happy's YouTube link ... It says 'Mike Harding' but I don't recognise the voice as his. ??? Cracking comment on there from an Adam Diamond "What strange language is this song in ? There are clearly oriental elements but also gutturals that hint at Eastern Europe - is it Tuvan ? 13th Century ? Makes a nice change from all that finger in the ear stilted olde English Folky stuff. perhaps Ukrainian ?" |
