Subject: RE: Help looking for name of song From: KingBrilliant Date: 16 May 01 - 04:47 AM Peggy Gordon it sounds like. Its in the database - Click here Its a lovely song chords are Cs Fs & Gs (at least the way I play it they are). Kris |
Subject: RE: Help looking for name of song From: GUEST,Joe Date: 16 May 01 - 05:05 AM Hello Thank you very much that indeed sounds like it same tune in all but the version I heard was a little different.I would really appreciate if you could tell me if I could find this on a recording and where |
Subject: RE: Help looking for name of song From: Wolfgang Date: 16 May 01 - 05:18 AM click here for a closer hit. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Help looking for name of song From: KingBrilliant Date: 16 May 01 - 05:18 AM Oh blimey! Probably done by the Dubliners or the Clancy Brothers or someone like that. I remember it from my parent's record collection which was pretty much limited to those bands. You could try doing a search on Google click here to go to the google search engine site. I've had a quick search with the search entered as "Peggy Gordon" Dubliners. I found a site with the notes for the song click here Also found what looks like a CD selling site which gives a tracks listing for a Dubliner's CD click here - looks like a good CD actually Good luck with the quest. Kris |
Subject: RE: Help looking for name of song From: KingBrilliant Date: 16 May 01 - 07:45 AM Wolfgang- that sounds more like what Joe was after. The songs must be related I think. Now I've seen it I do remember hearing this one also - similar tune too, but a bit faster & a bit simpler I think. Kris |
Subject: RE: Help looking for name of song From: sophocleese Date: 16 May 01 - 08:02 AM I've heard the Corries and Buddy Whasisname and the Other Fellers do it. I heard the Corries version first so I prefer that one. |
Subject: RE: Help looking for name of song From: Wolfgang Date: 16 May 01 - 08:14 AM Kris, yes, I'm rather confident I have the correct one now, but my first idea would have been exactly yours and I only started searching the web when Joe was saying 'thanks, but not perfect' to your hint. An interesting song it is, copywrighted but each single line looks traditional to me (bits from Carrickfergus, Peggy Gordon, and so on). It is a creative potpourri. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Help looking for name of song From: GUEST,Joe Date: 17 May 01 - 04:27 AM Hello Thank you all for your help the one you sent Wolfgang is indeed it but it does have the same tune as peggy Gordon. Sort of like Thin Lizzy version of whiskey in the jar same tune just A little different. I must say once again Thank you all very much |
Subject: RE: Help looking for name of song From: SeanM Date: 17 May 01 - 04:56 AM Actually, my first reaction was that it sounds exactly like a variant on "I'm a Rover" that a friend of mine sings. Probably crossing "Peggy Gordon" lyrics with "I'm a Rover" tune. Darn that oral tradition thingy. M |
Subject: RE: Help looking for name of song From: KingBrilliant Date: 17 May 01 - 05:13 AM Oh yes - I've heard the Wolfgang one but with the I'm a Rover first verse as its first verse. I love it when there are songs with lots of related variants. I like taking bits from amongst them & coming up with another variant. You end up with a song that is both traditional and personal. Subject: RE: Help looking for name of song From: Wolfgang Date: 17 May 01 - 05:16 AM The lyrics in my link above have a mistake I think. In the fourth line of verse 1, 'a store' should better be written 'a st&o/acute;r'. 'Treasure' is the English translation of that gaelic word. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Help looking for name of song From: Wolfgang Date: 17 May 01 - 05:18 AM 'stór' is another try to get the correct printing. |
Subject: RE: Help looking for name of song From: Wolfgang Date: 17 May 01 - 05:20 AM 'stór' |
Subject: RE: Help looking for name of song From: IanC Date: 17 May 01 - 06:40 AM Hey There's a bit of I Wish, I Wish / There's A Tavern in there too! What a cobble-up!
Cheers |
Subject: RE: Help looking for name of song From: Charley Noble Date: 17 May 01 - 08:45 AM Peggy Seeger recorded a traditional version of "Peggy Gordon" on her record SONGS FOR ME AND YOU, back in the 1960's. |
Subject: RE: Help looking for name of song From: KingBrilliant Date: 17 May 01 - 08:54 AM Another lovely song to that tune is Come Kiss Me Love. I've always thought it would be nice to combine a man singing Peggy Gordon with a woman singing Come Kiss Me Love. - just gotta find myself a man!!! (the one I've got won't sing) Kris |
