ASP stands for Active Server Pages. I'm am not sure of what can be done with it but one area it does handle is communicating with Databases and the production of dynamically (produced on demand) web pages and I beleive is a rival technology to Cold Fusion which is used in this forum for the same purposes. A server that handles ASP allows a mix of HTML and "ASP commands" which can be written in more than one language including VB script.

I'll attempt a very simplified example of what I mean in some form of hopefully understandable language. Let's say I want to keep member records for a forum and produce a web page that lists a member together with real name.

It the first instance, I would create and store the member details in a database, e.g. Microsoft Acesss and could store, MemberID, Nickname, RealName, Email... in a table called Member.

In my ASP web page, I could, together with the regular HTML, include something along the lines of (note, this is not proper coding)

(first I select my records) ChosenRecords = SELECT MemberID, NickName FROM Member

(then I display them) For Each Chosen Record Write Member ID, NickName

When I user calls up this page, the "Write" line would display the appropritate details for each member I selected.

To take it further, suppose I wanted to list members beging with A: Simple, just extend the SELECT bit to say something along the lines of WHERE MemberID LIKE A*. Take it further again, suppose I wanted more flexibility: Simple, I supply my SELECT bit with some user supplied information rather that my rigid A* above...

I hope this makes some sense and that you can see that it does provide a means of producing flexible solutions to problems.

I am not a computer buff, just a fairly intelligent user whose main interests lie in other fields (or woods), but I do like to at least have some idea what the experts are talking about.

Well Sean, I just use Front Page Express and a text editor. I can't say I've ever really known much HTML or had much interest in the stuff. Most of what I have picked up has come as a result of this forum, most commonly from trying to sort out other's queries and problems and I have a tendency to forget it again very quickly.

ASP has recently caught my attention and I think I'll start having a proper play with it soon. I'm just weird but I find the idea of dynamic content and databases more interesting than static pages.

Wifty trick, Jon! I likes it.

At one point, I'd learned most of the tricks for basic HTML - my first webpage was handcoded in Notepad, and it took me months to edit out all the mistakes.

Then I got Dreamweaver 2.

Then I got Dreamweaver 3.

Now I've got Frontpage 2k.

I'm spoiled now, and have forgotten most of the tricks I don't use here (mostly hyperlinks)... *sniff*

My guess regarding the google search:

(As I'm sure you know) Google rates pages according to the number of pages that link to a particular page.

I assume that the threads which appear when searching for 'catspaw49' have been linked to by another site.

A google search for some things I have previously submitted to Mudcat would seem to confirm this.

Jon, your link works on my machine, "Hello" in the body, a cc recipient and all.

Problem is, the mailto: protocoll is very sensitive to configuration of the machine and most time does not work with the extensions (subject, cc, bcc, body).

A neat trick I just discovered for 'mailto' links... (I'm leaving the brackets off because I don't know the code to get them to display...

But, the normal mailto link of "mailto:[e-mail]" just gives you the email link. If you make it "mailto:[e-mail]?subject=This appears on the subject line", you then get the same email link, but it automatically inserts whatever you wish for the subject line...

I don't know Joe, I don't understand the workings of these things - do they search on the pages as displayed or the underlying HTML?

Here's one for somebody: I just tried a Google search for "catspaw49" and it yeilded about 10-15 results from Mudcat. I can understand the ones from the resource pages which are static pages but how do these things manage to pick up results from pages such as these forum pages which are generated dynamically?

One word of warning here. If you are using email links, remember you are making email addresses publicly available. Some may find it preferable to use a false address for test/ practice purposes.

While here... you can go a step further than KingBrilliant suggested. If you see something you like on a web page, nick it, i.e. copy and paste it, play with it - modify it if necessary to suit your needs and use it. I do and I wouldn't mind betting lots of others do...

You can look at the raw HTML by using the Page Source option under the View menu at the top of Netscape browser, or by using Source option under the View menu at the top of the Internet Explorer browser. That is the way to learn any nice techniques that you see on any web page you access. Of course only the text formatting tags & linking tags will be appropriate to posting on the threads though.

If you're posting links at Mudcat, the quotation marks are optional. I prefer not to use them, because they complicate the task of making links. Simple is better, I think. Fewer misteaks.

I find it's best to open a new browser window [CTRL-N] and navigate your way to the site you want to link to. Highlight and copy [CTRL-C] the URL (address) of the site, and then go back to your Mudcat message and paste [CTRL-V] the URL into your link. Be sure to include the http:// in that URL. The quotation marks are standard procedure, but most links work just fine without quotation marks.

Yes, and you can practice the tricks you learn here in this thread. Others will, too, once you start.

Once you know the basics of how to do it, try my trick-- copy and paste a template of the commands to a word processor document to leave on your desktop. Then you use that to build your clickies in the future, just changing the URL each time.

And if you don't figure it out right away, DON'T WORRY. Just type in the URL you want us to see, and someone will either make it into a clickie or else poeople will just paste your link into their address line. We all did this at first, and still do sometimes if in a hurry. There is lots of stuff in the FAQ that's more interesting-- take your time and enjoy being here.
