Greetings, again. I've almost given up the search for Back to Donegal lyrics, Rory McLeod's version I mean. Perhaps someone here is a fan of him and may have the lyrics to his version. Thanks

I'm a Rory fan too - he's brilliant. I was just listening to his 'Spring is Returning' on a compilation CD.
His website (click here) says that there a Rory songbook coming up..

Saw Rory at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, and again when he played the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. What a bundle of energy! Great stories too!

Check out his YouTube videos, especially "Farewell Welfare" and "Lonely Dancer." The first is a professional MTV-style video ... the second has a forgettable camcorder visual from a distance, but the song is terrific.

Amazon Music also has a few of his CDs. Can't understand why this mesmerizing performer isn't better known in the US.

I was led to look him up by his fetching theme music for "Creature Comforts." The man's a genius.

That's an easy one. Here's the url of his YouTube video of "Back to Donegal." Again, it's a distant camcorder, so the visual is poor, but the song is there, folks, in live performance with guitar.

I saw him yesterday at the Maghull[near Liverpool]Day of Folk Music. He was great. Indeed, the whole day was great. What a line-up. Vin Garbutt, the Tannehill Weavers, Isambarde etc. It's a great pity that this will be the last of these annual events, but the organisers certainly went out on top!

We saw Rory at Sidmouth one year. A young woman asked could she record him: she and her boyfriend had had an accident en route for Sidmouth and he was kept in hospital for a couple of days, missing the concert. Rry had a word with the soundman, recorded off the desh and dedicated a songto her boyfriends recovery.

Lovely man

You can also hear the entire song BACK TO DONEGAL at Rory McLeod's MySpace page. It's more intelligible than the YouTube video, but the accent, the fast tempo, and the unfamiliar names still make it very difficult for me to transcribe.

Here's another "video" at YouTube of Rory McLeod singing BACK TO DONEGAL—but somebody has matched the audio with come goofy video. It might be useful for someone trying to transcribe it, but it's too much for me.

OK, here's my first draft of a transcription, based mainly on this recording by Rory McLeod and his band, but somewhat helped by listening to this recording by Rory McLeod, solo. As you can see it has lots of gaps. I'm counting on others to help fill them in. I have numbered the lines for easy reference.

1. Back to Donegal, going to see old Leo,
2. Into ...'s bar ... don't forget your banjo.
3. Knock up all the old tribe: Lawrence, Liam, Billy.
4. ... on the banks of old Lough Swilly

5. I saw the big yellow moon go down; we played all night in Letterkenny,
6. Singing the whistling thief and all my mates were whistling with me,
7. Playing tunes upon the ferry from Holyhead ...
8. ... to the steps of ...

9. ... rolling ... with all the cans that we can carry
10. ... Seamus ... Derry
11. John shares to Paddy on the Turnpike; Lawrence shares ...
12. Everyone we know is there; we must meet in ...

13. Steven winks at Dinny; Dinny winks at ...
14. Tommy's cradling his pipes like he's cradling a football.
15. Home to see old friends and family ...
16. Who was killed ... invasion, back to Donegal.

17. Playing sets of reels and jigs, oh how I feel my soul flies
18. With ... someone's kitchen, singing to the sunrise
19. And his fiddle bow is scratching a devil tune from a violin
20. ... long fingers ... The Butcher's Apron, plucking on his banjo skin.

[INSTRUMENTAL BREAK]

21. Steve's hand is like a hummingbird, whipping out rhythm on the mandolin
22. Smiling Nigel ... makes me smile to see him grin
23. Catch the flying tunes skipping and the rolling in the rhythm
24. Catching the fiddler's dark brown eyes; I can't stop looking in them.

25. Such a crazy love, we can't get enough; I'm in love with the whole damn ... my friends
26. We're in love with it; we're in love with the tune; we're in love with the dance that will never end
27. We're in love with the winding roads that wend through the mountain valleys and down through the glen
28. We're in love with the glimmering light on the hills; we're in love with the barman who pays all our bills

[INSTRUMENTAL BREAK]

29. Rhythm takes a hold of me; I can't keep my feet still
30. This one's for the barmaid, the one who keeps my glass filled.
31. The moon is crying a story of love she's been bursting to tell
32. Someone's torn the clanger out of the landlord's drinking-up bell.

33. Ask the landlord to give us some of that beer that we're helping him to sell.
34. Give us that song; you know how it goes: the town I love so well.
35. Oh, we don't know where we're going, but we'll tell you where we've been.
36. I'm touching the earth; I'm a traveling man and a joker without shame.

37. I've come from the land of the idiot; I'm a fool that keeps on falling in love.
38. I love women and I can't get enough; I'll dance with them till my legs fall off,
39. Teach them the Hokey Cokey, laughing, we'll dance arm in arm.
40. Now we're off to Downings, Ballyshannon and Stranorlar.

41. Killybegs, Holyhead, then Sheephaven and Coleraine
42. I was true to my word last time we were here, that we'd be back again.
43. When we're traveling, we'll give you, love, the song ... knows you.
44. ... will you, landlord; we've got no homes to go to.

[INSTRUMENTAL BREAK]

45. I feel I'm tearing myself away; I love you and I'll leave you.
46. I'll be back home some old night ...
47. The barmen shout, announcing to everybody: have you got no homes to go to?
48. I sing: I ain't got no home in this world anymore; I'm just passing through.

49. Home is where my friends are, and you are all part of me.
50. I'll leave you with this song: Are you coming? Are you going? Try to stop me.
51. Home is where my friends are, and you are all part of me.
52. I'll leave you with this song: Are you coming? Are you going? Try to stop me.

From: GUEST
Date: 24 Jun 15 - 09:46 AM

Here are the lyrics in full.

BACK TO DONEGAL
                Rory McLeod

Back to Donegal, going to see old Leo,
Into Rodden's bar Paul don't forget your banjo.
Knock up all the old tribe, Lawrence, Liam, Billy.
Hilary, Eileen, Seercha on the banks of old Lough Swilly

We saw the big yellow moon go down; we played all night in Letterkenny,
Singing the whistling thief and all my mates were whistling with me,
Playing tunes upon the ferry from Holyhead or Stranraer
Hitched ourselves a ride to the steps of the Gweedore Bar

After rolling out some tunes and with all the cans that we can carry
All pile in Seamus Mac's bus, through the road blocks outside Derry
John shouts for Paddy on the Turnpike; Lawrence shouts "oh can ya"
Everyone we know is there, we must be in Buncrana

Steven winks at Dinny; Dinny winks at Paul
Tommy's cradling his pipes Martin's cradling a football.
Home to see old friends and family feeling ten feet tall
From West Kilburn to the Paddington Basin, back to Donegal.

Playing sets of reels and jigs, oh how I feel my soul flies
From the bar to someone's kitchen, singing to the sunrise
Eileen's fiddle bow is scratching the Devil's Jig from her violin
Paul's long fingers picking The Butcher's Apron, plucking on his banjo skin.

[Paddy on the Turnpike]

Steve's hand is like a hummingbird, whipping out rhythm on the mandolin
Smiling like George Formby makes me smile to see him grin
Catch the flying tunes skipping and a rolling in the rhythm
Catching the fiddler's dark brown eyes; I can't stop looking in them.

Such a crazy love, we can't get enough; I'm in love with the whole damn crowd of my friends
I'm in love with them, we're in love with the tune; we're in love with the dance that will never end
We're in love with the winding roads that bend through the mountain valleys and down through the glen
We're in love with the glimmering light on the hills; we're in love with the bar that pays all our bills

[The Wise Maid]

The rhythm takes a hold of me; I can't keep my feet still
This one's for the barmaid, the one who keeps my glass filled.
Fionualla's crying a story of love she's been bursting to tell
Someone's torn the clanger out from the landlord's drinking up bell.

Ask the landlord to give us some of that beer that we're helping him to sell.
Give us that song; you know how it goes: The Town I Love So Well.
Oh, we don't know where we're going, but we'll tell you where we've been.
I'm touching the earth; I'm a travelling man and I'm joking with Ossian

I've come from the land of the ever young; I'm a fool who keeps on falling in love.
I love women and I can't get enough; I'll dance with them till my legs fall off,
Teach them the Hokey Cokey, laughing, we'll dance arm in arm.
Now we're off to Downings, Ballyshannon and Strabane

Killybegs, Malin Head, then Sheephaven and Coleraine
As true to our word last time we were here, that we'd be back again.
When we're travelling, we'll give your love to somebody who knows you.
Lock us in here with you, landlord; we've got no homes to go to.

[Eileen Ogue]

I feel I'm tearing myself away; I love you and I'll leave you.
I'll be back some old day to West Kilburn and Buncrana
The barman's shouting out to everybody: have you got no homes to go to?
I sing: I ain't got no home in this world anymore; I'm just passing through.

Home is where my friends are, and you are all part of me.
I'll leave you with this song: Are you coming? Are you going? Try to stop me.
Home is where my friends are, and you are all part of me.
I'll leave you with this song: Are you coming? Are you going? Try to stop me.
