Hi folks; I tried this once before and got no response so I thought I'd give it another go. Does anybody know where to find the lyrics and perhaps the chords to a song recorded by Chip Taylor called "I want the real thing"?

The chorus goes:

Don't want you under my roof
With your 86 proof,
Watered down till it tastes like tea.
You wanna pull my string,
Make it the real thing
For me.

I've tried a few searches but I can't find these lyrics. If you're interested some of his other lyrics are available here

Brian

I found another quote from the song here.

"...I remember old Elvis when he forgot to remember to forget
and when young Johnny Cash hadn't seen this side of the big river yet
and when Sun was more than the daylight shining on Memphis, Tennessee
and when Luther and Lewis and Perkins was pickin' and playin' them songs for me..."

And I found out that the title is given as "(I Want) The Real Thing," and it appears on the album "Chip Taylor's Last Chance," 1973.

Thanks for the link. Interesting site. I've only heard Chip once, it was a live interview. He played "Angel of The Morning". It sure changed my view of the song. What a voice.

(I WANT) THE REAL THING
(Chip Taylor)

Well I was on a bus coming back to us from Atlanta in '63.
I picked up a rhythm and blues magazine layin' underneath the seat,
And I found that the stuff they were playin' us wasn't made from grits and bone,
And it takes more than the Crewcuts and Pat Boone to take me home.

CHO: I want the real thing. Give me the real thing.
Make it loud and they'll make you proud of the songs they sing.
Don't want you under my roof with your 86 proof
Watered down 'til it tastes like tea.
You're gonna pull my string, make it the real thing for me.

And I remember old Elvis when he forgot to remember to forget,
And when young Johnny Cash hadn't seen this side of the big river yet,
When Sun was more than daylight shining on Memphis, Tennessee,
When Luther and Lewis and Perkins was pickin' and singin' them songs for me. CHO.

[Sun refers to Sun Records.]
