hi, i am looking for a program that will allow you to type notes onto a blank music score then print it out. can anyone suggest any good ones please. thanks!

Muse will do this. I like it because it also lets you easily decide how much to place on one page.

Just for the record(which means that I don't necessarily recommend it) most people who do e serious work with music notation use either Finale or Overture--I have both--but I recommend Overture, which is much more intuitive, has a way better sequencer(so you can play your scores) and converts MIDI files much more easily(I tend to write and edit in the sequencer, then converting it to a score)--

These programs are ridiculously expensive(#400 or so) but both companies have less expensive versions that do less, but are supposed to be easier to use--I don't know the names--Overture is now sold by Cakewalk-- I can't find my link to Finale but their program is Hell to use, anyway--

You probably want a freeware or a demo, which neither of them provide, and if you are just fooling around with notation right now, you will probably do better just making do with whatever is free--However, I suggest that you work do your writing in a sequencer, and use a program that will convert it to text, simply because, if you stick with it and actually buy a program, you will be able to access the first stuff you've written in the new program--

I know someone who downloaded a Demo of a notation software and used it to do a new score--90 days later the program expired and there was no way to access the score--You have to think ahead--

I've been using MusicWorks2 for a couple of years. It's not free (about 40pounds sterling I think it was)and I don't know if it's still on the market. It'll read and save midi (albeit with some strange key signaures when importing midis) as well as its own .MWW format. Interface is a bit awkward, but it copes with triplets, ties, transposition, mixed time signatures,multiple staves etc. However I've found nothing else between the free/shareware and the expensive stuff. Anyone know of any mid-priced software with an easy interface?

For transferring from midi to sheet music, I really like MidiNotate. You can try it for free for one month and even after, it is not that expensive. I learned about it from some other Mudcatters.

Another one worth investigating is NoteWorthy Composer. It's shareware, so you can try it out and decide if you want to register. It does pretty much everything I want, so I bought it -- can't recall the price, but it wasn't that much. About forty bucks, I think. It also lets you import MIDI files you download from the net (e.g., "Click to Play" in DT -- and there are MIDI files available all over the net, such as oncontemplator.com), display them as sheet music, and edit them if you wish -- and play them! Good program.

There's a free version of MidiNotate still available on the web. It's version 1.34, which was the last freeware version. One place it's available is:

ftp://ftp.zdnet.com/fr/public/midintte.exe (Note that's an FTP site, so you'll need an FTP aware browser)

Since I also have NoteWorthy, which I also highly recommend, I've never tried the later versions of MidiNotate, but 1.34 does a good job of creating a score from a midi. It doesn't have all the page layout features of NoteWorthy, but perhaps these are available in the shareware versions. Anyhow, either of these programs does a pretty good job at a very reasonable price.

I'm currently using Power Tab. It gives a fairly pretty result, but it's not incredibly user-friendly - for starters, there's no "word-wrap" feature so if you want to insert a bar you have to frig about with copy-and-paste for hours.

I moved from 'Noteworthy' to a program called 'Capella' because I wanted to put notation with first verse lyrics into 'Word' documents. Capella does this pretty well (once you've worked it out) and I use it to produce books and for the websites I do. It also produces midi files, enables you to play multple parts in different voices etc. It isn't perfect (doesn't always follow Windows conventions, has it's own bizarre logic,etc) but - hey! it doesn't cost anything like as much as the professional packages.

You can find more about it and download a demo at www.softpart.co.uk. There is also some other music related software that might be useful

'almost' all usual references to products like this tend to mean WINDOWS...people who have MAC stuff usually ask for it and specify it ...a couple of these programs may have a MAC or Linux version, but there simply aren't as many.

Since the thread has been revived, I will add that Noteworthy Composer will run in Linux using Wine. I use Noteworthy in this way. There is the odd glitch from time to time but it works fine 95% of the time.

Noteworthy can export its scores as Windows advanced metafiles (*.emf). These will happily import into Open Office and I use this to create both song and tune books.

If you want your scores as bitmaps, IrfanView will convert them. - Also runs in Linux under Wine.

As this thread is now live again, my problem is I want to convert music notation dots to ABC, I could write out the ABC but I can write the dots on a stave a lot faster. Musescore I agree is a very good writing prog but how can I then convert the result to ABC?

I had MuseScore recommended to me but I couldn't get on with it, though I admit I probably did not give it time. Once I found I could get Noteworthy working in Wine, I did not really have the incentive to carry on, especially as I already had several hundred tunes in Noteworthy format. The effort of converting them would have been too much.

If you are a Linux user, there is also NoteEdit (Qt) and NtEdit (Gtk). I found the latter worked better for me but I have found that Qt based software does not always seem to work as well as it should with the Gnome desktop.
