Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: Manitas Date: 21 May 01 - 05:31 PM I shall probably be in the Old Road Tavern on Friday night. I'm dancing with East Saxon Sword so I'm not sure where I'll end up at any time after that. |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: Ella who is Sooze Date: 22 May 01 - 03:19 AM Might go along for a few tunes on Sunday, depending on how much is consumed the night before. It's an hour away from me. But Old Road Tavern it will be. Ella |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: English Jon Date: 22 May 01 - 03:37 AM Yep. I'll be there. Playing with a group called "Sofibacugo" on monday at some point. Will probably be spending most of the weekend in the pub. So, look for a bloke with the George cross on his fiddle case! English Jon |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: KingBrilliant Date: 22 May 01 - 04:47 AM We'll be there. Kris |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: GUEST,mkeen@bigfoot.com Date: 22 May 01 - 05:56 AM Possibly - I'm in Swindon, so it's not far. Is the Goldiggers still open in Chippenham, haven't been there for years - used to work there? http://www.rodgarfield.f9.co.uk mysite http://www.geocities.com/pxp_uk |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: GUEST,Louisa Date: 22 May 01 - 07:50 AM Hi I'll be there, playing in Old Road Tavern, fri and sat. Louisa |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: KingBrilliant Date: 24 May 01 - 11:46 AM Have a nice Chippenham then all. We (Mark, Kristin & Amoret) will be wandering around & going to plenty of workshops & singy things. We'll be camping on the site by the river, in a big white bell tent. Anyone else on the campsite? I'll try to make sure one of us is wearing the m'cat T shirt, and hope to bump into some 'cats in our meanderings. Kris |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: Mr Red Date: 24 May 01 - 02:52 PM MC'ing Sun Morn. comms base station sessions Ceilidhs Yup, I'll be there |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: JudeL Date: 25 May 01 - 04:02 AM We're also camping by the river. Look for three tents clustered round a green & white striped gazebo. There's 6 of us this year including my eldest son's girlfriend, and it feels like it's not so much going on holiday for the weekend as moving home, there seems to be so much stuff. I expect we'll be spending lots of time in the rose & crown & the angel, or where-ever ther's a song session. Have't been able to plan ahead of time this year as no program has arrived (possibly because of Watford postal strike). I don't have a catter's tshirt but if I remember I'll tie a couple of balloons to the gazebo. Jude |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: Gervase Date: 25 May 01 - 07:38 AM I'm hoping to make it down for the Sunday (if the bloody Fiasco doesn't break down and if other buggerances don't intervene). And Jude, is that the same gazebo that suffered so much abuse at Towersey last year? It shows amazing stamina, if that's the case! |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: Linda Kelly Date: 25 May 01 - 05:54 PM Just to say that there was a group at Nellies folk club in Beverley on Monday called Bayou Secou who are from Silver City New Mexico. They play fiddle guitar and banjo but it's not so much the instruments they played as their wonderful singing which was different from anything else I have heard. Go see them at Chippenham where I beleive they are guesting. |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: The Shambles Date: 26 May 01 - 04:49 AM Err No.
I have come down with my second bout of flu, in as many weeks. I was alright until my wife recently started to ply me with healthy food and vitamins. My best regards to all at The Old Road Tavern. Hope to see you all next year. |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: Manitas Date: 29 May 01 - 05:40 PM Well I met up with Snuffy and Kenww?? at the campsite shebeen on Sunday night. JudeL and Paul were there also. I caught a glimpse of Kingbrilliant and Hammerite in the garden of the Old Road Tavern on Friday night but didn't see anyone who might have been Louisa - perhaps she couldn't get into the pub or was in one of the other sessions there? |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: Ella who is Sooze Date: 30 May 01 - 03:33 AM oh bugger... didn't make it! Suffered a bout of sleeping sickness. Was meant to go along Sunday, slept in, had breakfast, fell asleep, woke up walked the dogs, fell asleep, had dinner, fell asleep! But I guess I needed it. How did it go? E |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: Gervase Date: 30 May 01 - 05:30 AM Got down there in the end, if only for a flying visit. And, bloody heck, wasn't it sweaty?! Some great singing, though - one of the highlights was Moira Craig and Pearl O'Neill singing "A Proper Sort of Gardener" as a tribute to Rod Shearman on Sunday night in the session that doesn't happen. Saw, briefly, Jude, Snuffy, Allan, Manitas, but didn't get a chance to chew the fat as time was so tight. Next year, however... |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: English Jon Date: 30 May 01 - 10:16 AM Which one were you Gervase? Moira and Pearl were brilliant. Made me cry. English John |

Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: English Jon Date: 31 May 01 - 08:47 AM Oh right. Think I've got you. Good song. I'm the bloke with the small brown guitar. Think I did Forsaken Mermaid at that one. See you at a fest soon! Jon |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: JudeL Date: 31 May 01 - 10:57 AM At various festivals, there often seems to be an afterhours gathering of singers in the shower block. But this year at Chippenham, Alan outdid himself. He brought beer & not just a few cans, but barrels of decent real ale! Just what was needed to lubricate the vocal chords. Wassail Jude |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: alanww Date: 31 May 01 - 12:19 PM Yes Alan White did very well - but the beer ran out just after we had started the Sunday night sing in the shower block. Better get three barrels next time Alan ... ! "The boar's head in hand bear I ... !" Alan |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: JudeL Date: 31 May 01 - 12:31 PM What's that "singer's head in hand" beer, after 2 barrels in 2 nights no wonder some people looked a little bleary eyed in the morning, or was it just lack of sleep Jude |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: manitas_at_work Date: 01 Jun 01 - 08:24 AM What's worse is there was no beer for the workshops in the Bridge Centre next morning! |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: GUEST,Brian Date: 01 Jun 01 - 08:55 AM Just to put the record straight. Alan didn't outdo himself - he puts on decent beer every year, just as he does at the Wail! Always at a fair price too. That's why it sells out. Cheers Alan, my old mate. Brian |

Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 02 Jun 01 - 01:36 AM I advanced it myself.
My poor head in hand bear I,
Pass the alka seltzer round,
My poor mouth, I don't understand
Pass the alka seltzer round,
My stomach now is filled with flame,
Pass the alka seltzer round, Long live the Accoustic Bog Squad..... not as useful as the usual Bog Squads at festivals, but a darn sight more fragrant! LTS

Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: GUEST,Louisa Date: 02 Jun 01 - 10:28 AM I was there too! Soory not to have met any mudcatters...or maybe we did and just didn't realise. Friday night I saw a bit of mates Spiro in the barn before joining the session in the left hand bar (going in from the garden) playing the fiddle, also sang a song, Donna Donna with Jason from Spiro on accordion. Mmm Saturday was there again, mainly playing with my piper friend Pete and some others in the right hand bar, before seeing Firebrand in the barn in the evening. Carried on playing until very late and then went to sleep (or not as it was v. uncomfortable) in the barn. Next day played some more in the left hand bar again. Went home in the afternoon. Went to the arena and stalls a few times but unfortunately did not get to see Pearl again after singing at one of her events last Chippenham! Anyway think Old Road Tavern is marvellous - hope everyone had a great festival Louisa |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: JudeL Date: 02 Jun 01 - 03:45 PM My comment wasn't a dig at Alan, far from it. It's not that Alan's Ale isn't always perfectly scrumptious, its the idea of having an after hours supply in the campsite pavillion to lubricate a late night sing that was the innovative and (IMHO) marvellous bit Especially for those of us who hardly got to sing at the lunchtime sessions. Personally I disagree with having guest singers in a singaround session, especially one as rigidly time limited as the lunchtime sings. The guests plus spots used to be something that was done in the afternoons, where it was very well attended and much appreciated. I don't know how others feel but, this year the balance of the Chippenham program appeared to be far more dance than usual. There was one very long concert each night and 4 dance events. And during the day, if you were a singer, the two daytime sings were not staggered but on at exactly the same time! This seemed to me to be a bit odd. Jude |
Subject: RE: BS: Chippenham anyone? From: Manitas Date: 03 Jun 01 - 06:54 AM There has been a gradual loss of informal venues over recent years. The singing session used to be in the Bear but with changes of landlord etc that had to move and was able to go into the Rosie as the mixed session formerly run by Tom Gilmour and myself in the old bar came to the end of it's life. The Borough was lost when it was unavailable due to refurbishment a couple of years ago and the Irish session moved to the Old Road Tavern. There used to be a singaround in the skittle alley of the Black Horse years ago but I don't know why that died. Now the Angel has been refurbished it's not really suitable for the type of noisy mixed sessions we used hold in the evenings. The Borough was dead on Sunday night and I think it can probably be reclaimed as a session if someone wants to go in and ask next year. |
