Subject: Pubs in Edinburgh

I'll be travelling to the UK in June, and plan on spending a few days in Edinburgh, Scotland. Can anyone recommend the best pubs for trad. music listening?

Somebody please post a clicky to the Edinburgh Gig Guide. It tells you everything you need to know . There is a very nice sesion (singaround) in the Grey Horse, Balerno, if you are there on the first Tuesday of June.

Murray

Well, I'm not THE expert(that would be my boyfriend the Edinburgh native..I'll get him to post as well)...but I was there last July and the two places I loved the most were

1)The Ensign Ewert (top of the Royal Mile right next to the castle) which is kind of 'touristy' but all three nights I went they had GREAT music.

2)WHISTLEBINKIES!!!! really nifty place, just off the Royal Mile, (dont ask me exactly where-close to #1 tho-cos we walked)...had more trad music early on in the evening until about 11pm, and then at midnight things got crazy-a band called "The Roods" came in after their regular gig and played some folk/punk sort of something that really was great (amazing fiddler in the band!)

Actually, there were several more places all in the same area with music..start at the Ensign Ewert and then walk and listen for strains of music from the next pub..follow your ears:-)!!

I was at Sandy Belles, but, there waS No music that night. A very kindly native led me down to another place a few blocks away, and it was quite large. There was music aplenty there.

Two good bets are "The Tass", Cy Laurie's pub on the Royal Mile, (often singers sessions in there), and the "Royal Oak", in Infirmary Street, just south of the Royal Mile (Folk Club night, sessions downstairs, and often a singer/guitarist on upstairs).
love, john

Kendall, the place to which you were led was the "Tron" aka the "Ceilidh House". Regrettably Tennants Breweries decided in their wisdom that it was no longer to be a folk music bar, and as far as I know there is no (folk) music there now. But yes, it was a great place, to quaff a pint or two. Too many fiddlers and not enough songs, but a great pub nonetheless.

"The Grey Horse" in Balerno is currently shut/boarded up/not in use: don't know when it will reopen unless there's someone out there that wants to take it on! So check before coming out! (Guest too!!) Also the "Castle bar" just below Edinburgh castle has a lot on. You can pick up "The Gig Guide" in most pubs, tourist office, theatres, etc

I just got an E-mail update from Dougie MacLean's website..seems the Dunkeld folks have opened a coffee house in Edinburgh called 'On The Mound' that "welcomes spontaneous music sessions from visitors" more info @ www.onthemound.com

I'd echo the Tass and The Castle Bar Cafe (both belonging to Cy Laurie) as being excellent music pubs; I'd also suggest the Hebrides Bar in Market Street just a short walk from Waverley Station.

Is that Cy Laurie the jazzman?
Herself has to go to Edinburgh for work several times a year so this thread could be useful to her.
