Subject: The first time he went to climb the From: GUEST,hilary Date: 22 May 01 - 08:31 PM Hello all, Can anyone help me identify a lovely song I rememmber from many years ago - just fragments I'm afraid. It was on a commercial recording , I'm 99% sure it's Irish. It's slow, sad but powerful song about a man about to be hanged.... ' The first time he went to climb the ladder, his blooming face began to pale (gaelic bit).... ' More like a commanding officer than a man about to die.' Unfortunately that's about all I can remember ! Fingers crossed, Hilary. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The first time he went to climb the From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 23 May 01 - 07:53 AM Sometimes it's possible to find songs through the "Digitrad and Forum Search" (main Forum page) by typing in fragments of lyric: in this case, commanding officer is the bit that would do the trick for you. As it happens, I put a list of links to references here and elsewhere to this group of songs in this thread: The Maid Freed From the Gallows I've not come across a traditional set of this song with any Gaelic in it; though there may be such, perhaps the recording you heard was just poorly enunciated or heavily-accented English. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The first time he went to climb the From: GUEST,mej Date: 23 May 01 - 06:09 PM I believe that the song you're looking for is The Streets of Derry sung by Triona Ni Dhomhnaill on the Bothy Band album Out of the Wind into the Sun. It's a beautiful version! Mary in Boston

But my computer returned a "The page cannot be displayed" message, so I posted the song information in the hopes of saving Hilary some frustration. Mary in Boston |
