Subject: The first time he went to climb the
From: GUEST,hilary

Hello all,

Can anyone help me identify a lovely song I rememmber from many years ago - just fragments I'm afraid.

It was on a commercial recording , I'm 99% sure it's Irish. It's slow, sad but powerful song about a man about to be hanged....

' The first time he went to climb the ladder, his blooming face began to pale (gaelic bit)....

' More like a commanding officer than a man about to die.'

Unfortunately that's about all I can remember !

Fingers crossed, Hilary.

Sometimes it's possible to find songs through the "Digitrad and Forum Search" (main Forum page) by typing in fragments of lyric: in this case, commanding officer is the bit that would do the trick for you.  As it happens, I put a list of links to references here and elsewhere to this group of songs in this thread:

The Maid Freed From the Gallows

I've not come across a traditional set of this song with any Gaelic in it; though there may be such, perhaps the recording you heard was just poorly enunciated or heavily-accented English.

Malcolm

I believe that the song you're looking for is

The Streets of Derry

sung by Triona Ni Dhomhnaill on the Bothy Band album

Out of the Wind into the Sun.

It's a beautiful version!

Mary in Boston,

Did you read the thread? Follow the links?

Your post adds nothing to what was already posted.

No doubt you were trying to help, but please read the thread first

Yes Guest, I did try to use the link.

But my computer returned a "The page cannot be displayed" message, so I posted the song information in the hopes of saving Hilary some frustration.

Recommend Al O'Donnell's version, from his 1st solo album. It may be on iTunes.

And there's a great version on Transatlantic Sessions with Carla Dillon and Paul Brady - see youtube.

Should be Paul Brody, right?
