Subject: king of california lyrics?
From: jonathan
Date: 19 Nov 98 - 08:56 PM

Hola- Last year, while out in Seattle to see my folks, I went to an open mike on Bainbridge Island at a place called the Cantina Cafe, where one of the regulars did a great tune that I think is called "The King of California." I'm wondering if anyone out there knows the lyrics and chords to this tune, since I was unable to get them from the guy I heard perform it?

Thanks for any leads!

It's the title track of a Dave Alvin album: Dave Alvin 'King of California' HCD 8054. It should be readily available through CDNOW etc.

Nevermind.. I got it myself...

KING OF CALIFORNIA
(Dave Alvin)

Well I left my home and my one true love
East of the Ohio River
Her father said we'd never wed
'Cause I had neither gold nor silver

But my darling dear please shed no tear
For I think that it's fair to warn ya
That I'll return to claim your hand
As the King of California

Over deserts hot and mountains cold
I traveled the indian country
Whispering your name under lonesome skys
Your memory my only company

But my darling dear please have no fear
For I think that's it fair to warn ya
That I'll return to claim your hand
As the King of California

I went up from Sacramento town
To the Sierra gold fields
And I worked my stake on a river bank
Dreaming just how a rich man feels

Now my darling dear listen here
For I think that's it fair to warn ya
That I'll return to claim your hand
As the King of California

Now a dead man's laying at my feel
He tried to steal my earnings
And I still recall your tender kiss
Though this bullet in my chest is burning

But my darling dear please shed no tear
'Cause I think that it's fair to warn ya
That I'll return to claim your hand
As the King of California

So you "really" liked it huh? Glad to hear it. To my ear, musically, its right up there with some of the best recordings of the past twenty years.

Another good reason for having the ability to edit your posts...

I'd love to be able to change this thread from a Lyric Request, to a Lyric Post...
