The lyrics I learnt have the line "for the more I dig the praties, the longer I'll be poor" which is somewhat similar to kendall's version above.

Always assumed this was an Irish song and tune, though obviously it's about the gold rush.

It is or was an Irish song and I believe it was more concerned about the potato famine and the general exodus to America by the Irish than any gold rush of course it changed over the years in the US.
