There is a song perhaps called "Wanderin'". I heard it recently by the opening act of Shawn Mullins, a man called Matthew Kahler-awesome singer. I knew enough of it that I remembered the melody. One line is " I don't ever think I can ever stop my wanderin'. It was areally beautiful song. I thought Bob Dylan did it, but I can't find it there. Does anyone kow? PD

Oh, yeah, who was that? My brain has simply been mush lately. James Taylor?
"And it don't look like
I'll ever stop my wandering..."

Dave van Ronk:

Daddy is an engineer, momma drives a hack
Sister takes in washing, and the baby balls the jack

But it looks like
I ain't never gonna cease
My wanderin'

I been working on the railroad
Workin' on the farm
All I got to show
Is this muscle in my arm

And it looks like
I ain't never gonna
Cease my weanderin'.

All I remember.

Regards,

A

I seem to remember this song from the late 40's or early 50's, but I can't (Senior moment) come up with the performer that made it popular. Sounds ridiculous but I want to say it was recorded by the Sammy Kay Orchestra.

Some more verses, as I sing them:

I've been wanderin' early,
And I've been wanderin' late,
I've been to New York City,
And I've seen the Golden Gate...

Refrain:
And it look's like,
I ain't never gonn cease, My wanderin'.

Train wrecks on land,
Ship wrecks at sea,
A red headed woman,
Made a wreck out of me...

Here I am in prison,
Feet 'gainst the wall,
A red headed woman,
Was the cause of it all...

A nickel is a nickel, And a dime is a dime,
Got a house full of children,
Maybe some of them is mine...

I've been in the Army,
I got sent across the sea,
I've been to the trenches,
And I've been to gay Paree...

That should give you enough to start with!

--- Steve

If found the first verse in Simpson's Quotations attributed to Carl Sandburg and they were read at his memorial in 1967.

It's in DigiTrad--search for Wanderin* (the asterisk will find it with or without the final g)

I have a personal history with this song. In nineteen ought forty-eight, I was working with a band (square dance mostly) which called itself The Wanderers, and used Wanderin* as a signature tune. Then Sammy Kaye (SWING AND SWAY WITH...)made a hit recording of it, effectively forcing us to find a new theme tune. WE picked up a little-known waltz, and used it as a good-night waltz. Catchy tune...Irene Goodnight.

Oh well.

Dick: Thank you. I thought Sammy Kaye made a reording of this song with Don Cornell as vocalist, but I wasn't sure because of the fifty or so years that have elapsed. And, in my opinion, you picked a pretty good signature song to replace "Wanderin'."

The melody was used in a Tom Jones hit, 'I'll never fall in love again" & attributed to Lonnie Donegan. I remember a version from 1940/50's by a British singer.

Here's the Tom Jones recording of "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," and yes, it is the same melody (at least at the beginning):

I was thinking of the Dionne Warwick recording song with the same title. I think that one was a Bacharach/David composition:
