I have a thing for Scottish music, especially patriotic songs. Actually, I love all things Scottish. I can't quite explain why. Must be my heritage (Cameron and Buchanan bloodlines) and the fact that my better half is the genuine article (the "wifie" is of MacDonald stock, Arbroath-born and rasied). A pal of mine in Brechin (Angus) once said I'm a Scot in the skin o' a Yank. I even wear a t-shirt with "MacWanabe" on the front of it. Enough of my blethering.

There's a song called "Scotland Yet" that I need the complete lyrics for. All I've managed to find so far is the last of its 3 verses: The thistle wags abune the fields Where Wallace bore his blade, That gied her foe-men's dearest build Tae dye her auld grey plaide And, looking tae the lift, my lads, He sang in doughty glee - "Auld Scotland's right, and Scotland's might, And Scotland's hills for me!" I'll drink a cup tae Scotland yet, Wi' a' the honours three!

It's actually a poem by James Thomson, set to music by James Booth. The melody reminds of of another popular song they colaborated on, "The Star O' Robbie Burns". Booth's style is readily recognizable.

I want to get a hold of the lyrics so I can add the song to my repertoir (I sing with a bunch of friends at the local piano bars and Irish pubs here in northern VA just for fun, and my forte is Scots/Irish, naturally).

Sorry to bore you all with TMI.

Thanks a bunch.

ScottyG

Ah, great poem! Unfortunately, it's not with me at the moment, but I will have it on Sunday. I was very close to putting music to it myself, but never got around to it. I know it's in the Oxford Book of Scottish poetry, if that is a faster way to get it...

I'm not sure if this is what you want ScottyG .....the words seem to fit but they are attributed to H. S. Riddel

Scotland Yet

Gae bring my giud auld harp ance mair , Gae bring it free and fast
For I maun sing anither sang, Ere a' my glee be past
And trow ye as I sing, my lads, The burden on't shall be
Auld Scotland's howes and Scotland's knowes, And Scotland's hills for me!
I'll drink a cup to Scotland yet, Wi' a' the honours three

The heath waves wild upon her hills, And foaming frae the fells
Her fountains sing of freedom still, As they dance down the dells
And weel I lo'e the land, my lads, That's girded by the sea
Then Scotland's vales and Scotland's dales and Scotland's hills for me
I'll drink a cup to Scotland yet, Wi' a' the honours three

The thistle wags upon the fields, where Wallace bore his blade
Taht gave her foemen's dearest blood, T dye her auld grey plaid
And, looking to the lift, my lads , He sang his doughty glee
Auld Scotland's right, and Scotland's might, And Scotlands hills for me
Then drink a cup to Scotland yet, Wi' a' the honours three

They tell o' lands with brighter skies, Where freedom's voice ne'er rang
Gi'e me the hills where Ossian dwelt, And Coila's minstrel sang
For I've nae skill o' lands, my lads, That ken na to be free
Then Scotland's right, and Scotland's might, And Scotlands hills for me
We'll drink a cup to Scotland yet, Wi' a' the honours three

PRINTED IN THE " THE GLOBE SONG FOLIO " 1905
Words by H.S.Riddel, MUSIC BY P McLeod

Nutty,

That's it!!! Someone told me the words were written by Thomson. Must've been mistaken. Thank's for the quick come-back on this.

Scott

Delighted to be able to help
When it comes to song books, some second hand book shops don't know what treasures are within. Only bought the book a couple of weeks ago.
